New Co10Fe10Mn35Ni35Zn10 high-entropy alloy Fabricated by Powder Metallurgy (분말야금법으로 제조한 새로운 Co10Fe10Mn35Ni35Zn10 고엔트로피 합금)

  • In this paper, a new $Co_{10}Fe_{10}Mn_{35}Ni_{35}Zn_{10}$ high entropy alloy (HEA) is identified as a strong candidate for the single face-centered cubic (FCC) structure screened using the upgraded TCFE2000 thermodynamic CALPHAD database. The $Co_{10}Fe_{10}Mn_{35}Ni_{35}Zn_{10}$ HEA is fabricated using the mechanical (MA) procedure and pressure-less sintering method. The $Co_{10}Fe_{10}Mn_{35}Ni_{35}Zn_{10}$ HEA, which consists of elements with a large difference in melting point and atomic size, is successfully fabricated using powder metallurgy techniques. The MA behavior, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the $Co_{10}Fe_{10}Mn_{35}Ni_{35}Zn_{10}$ HEA are systematically studied to understand the MA behavior and develop advanced techniques for fabricating HEA products. After MA, a single FCC phase is found. After sintering at $900^{\circ}C$, the microstructure has an FCC single phase with an average grain size of $18{\mu}m$. Finally, the $Co_{10}Fe_{10}Mn_{35}Ni_{35}Zn_{10}$ HEA has a compressive yield strength of 302 MPa.

Effect of Si on Corrosion of Fe-Cr and Fe-Cr-Ni Alloys in wet CO2 Gas

  • Model alloys Fe-9Cr, Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni (wt. %) with 0.1 and 0.2 % Si were exposed to $Ar-20CO_2-20H_2O$ gas at $818^{\circ}C$. The undoped alloys formed a thick iron-rich oxide scale. The additions of Si reduced scaling rates of Fe-9Cr to some extent but significantly suppressed the formation of iron oxide scales on Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni. Carburisation also occurred in all undoped alloys, but not in Si-containing Fe-20Cr and Fe-20Cr-20Ni. Protection against carburisation was a result of the formation of an inner scale layer of silica.

  • We report the correlation between the magnetic properties and lattice parameter of $Fe_xCo_{100-x}$ alloys as a function of constituent concentration. The saturation magnetization increases with Fe content and has a maximum value at approximately x=70 at.%. However, collapse in relative saturation magnetization is observed at approximately 30 at.% to 70 at.% of Fe in $Fe_xCo_{100-x}$ alloys. The collapse is due to the formation of Co-Co and Fe-Fe antibonding states instead of Fe-Co bonds. The lattice parameter also shrinks at approximately 30 at.% to 70 at.% of Fe. This shrinkage is due to an increase in the number of nearest neighbor antisite atoms, which then leads to a decrease in the long range order parameter.

  • Lattice structure, hydrogen absorption characteristics, discharge capacity and cycle life of $V_{22}Ti_{16}Zr_{16}Ni_{39}X_7$(X= Cr, Co, Fe, Mn, Al) alloys were investigated. The matrix phases of these alloys were the C14 Laves phase. Chromium-containing alloy had a vanadium-rich phase in addition to the Laves phase. The chromium, maganese, or aluminum-containing alloys had lower hydrogen equilibrium pressure and larger hydrogen absorption content than the cobalt or iron-containing alloys. The discharge capacities of these alloys were 270~330mAh/g. The discharge capacity according to the alloying element X decreased in the order of Mn>Cr>Co, Al)Fe. The charge/discharge cycle lives of the chromium, cobalt or iron-containing alloys were longer than those of maganese or aluminum-containing alloys due to the lower vanadium dissolution rate.

  • Magnetic properties of $Nd_{x}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{90-x}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}(x=\;3,\;4,\;5)$ rrelt-spun alloys with 6 at% B content were studied aiming for finding out a new $\alpha$-Fe based Nd-Fe-B nanocrystalline alloy with good hard magnetic properties. $Nd_{x}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{90-x}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ melt-spun alloys prepared by RSP crystallized to nanocrystalline phase. An optimally annealed $Nd_{3}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{87}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ melt-spun alloys had larger volume ratio of $\alpha$-Fe(Co) than that of higher Nd content alloy and showed high remanence of about 1.6 T. On the contrary, the increase of Nd content in $Nd_{x}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{90-x}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ alloys gave rise to gradual increase of an amount of $Nd_{2}{(Fe,\;Co)}_{14}B$ phase and improved coercivity. An optimally annealed $Nd_{5}{(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})}_{85}B_{6}Nb_{3}Cu_{1}$ alloy showed the most improved hard mag¬netic properties. The remanence, coercivityand energy product of the alloy were 1.35 T, 219 kA/m (2.75 kOe), and $129\;kJ/m^{3}$ (16.2 MGOe), respectively.

  • The effect of micro-pulse plasma nitriding temperature and time on the case thickness, hardness and nitride formation in the surface of Fe-12Cr-22Mn-X alloy with 3% Co and 1% Ti alloys elements investigated. External compound layer and internal diffusion layer was constituted in plasma nitride case of Fe-12Cr-22Mn-X alloys and formed nitride phase such as ${\gamma}'-Fe4N\;and\;{\varepsilon}-Fe2-3N$. Case depth increased with increasing the plasma nitriding temperature and time. Surface hardness of nitrided Fe-12Cr-22Mn-X alloys obtained the above value of Hv 1,600 and case depth obtained the above value of $45{\mu}m$ in Fe-12Cr-22Mn-3Co alloy and $60{\mu}m$ in Fe-12Cr-22Mn-1Ti alloy. Wear-resistance increased with increasing plasma nitriding time and showing the higher value in Fe-12Cr-22Mn-1Ti alloy than Fe-12Cr-22Mn-3Co alloy.

Corrosion Protection Properties of Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles for Water-Based Epoxy Coatings on 2024-T3 Aluminum Alloys

  • In this study, cobalt oxide (Co3O4) and cobalt-doped magnetite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. They were then used as corrosion inhibitors for corrosion protection of AA2024-T3 aluminum alloys. These obtained nanoparticles were characterized by x-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and Zeta potential measurements. Corrosion inhibition activities of Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were determined by performing electrochemical measurements for bare AA2024-T3 aluminum alloys in 0.05 M NaCl + 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution containing Co3O4 or CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Corrosion protection for AA2024-T3 aluminum alloys by a water-based epoxy with or without the synthesized Co3O4 or CoFe2O4 nanoparticles was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy during immersion in 0.1 M NaCl solution. The corrosion protection of epoxy coating deposited on the AA2024-T3 surface was improved by incorporating Co3O4 or CoFe2O4 nanoparticles in the coating. The corrosion protection performance of the epoxy coating containing CoFe2O4 was higher than that of the epoxy coating containing Co3O4.

Temperature Dependence of Magnetization of Amorphous TM_70 Cr_5 Si_10 B_15 (TM=Fe, Co, Ni) Alloys

  • We report the salient features of the magnetic properties of amorphous TM70Cr5Si10B15(TM=Fe, Co, Ni) alloys. The temperature dependence of magnetization for amorphous ribbons were measured by a SQUID and a VSM from 5 K to 700 K under an external field of 10 kOe. Except TM70Cr5Si10B15 that shows a paramagnetic behaviour, both Fe and Co based amorphous alloys show a typical ferromagnetic thermo-magnetization curves. For these two ferromagnetic alloys, the saturation magnetization in the temperature range from 5 K to about 0.4 Tc can be descrived by the Bloch relation, Ms (T)=Ms(0) [1-BT3/2-CT5/2]. The spin wave stiffness constants and the range of exchange interaction were analyzed from the magnetization behaviour. The variation of the magnetic properties are discussed and compared with the composition of the alloys.

  • Conventional Fe-Co alloys are important soft magnetic materials that have been widely used in industry. Compared to its polycrystalline counterpart, the nanostructured materials have showed superior magnetic properties, such as higher permeability and lower coercivity due to the single domain configuration. However, magnetic properties of nanostructured materials are affected in complicated manner by their microstructure such as grain size, internal strain and crystal structure. Thus, studies on synthesis of nanostructured materials with controlled microstructure are necessary for a significant improvement in magnetic properties. In the present work, starting with two powder mixtures of Fe and Co produced by mechanical alloying (MA) and hydrogen reduction process (HRP), differences in the preparation process and in the resulting microstructural characteristics will be described for the nano-sized Fe-Co alloy particles. Moreover, we discuss the effect of the microstructure such as crystal structure and grain size of Fe-Co alloys on the magnetic properties.
