  • With the object of developing a new magnetic core materials for high frequency use, the crystallization behaviors and the soft magnetic properties of amorphous $F_{86-x}Al_{4}B_{10}Zr_{x}\;(5{\leq}x{\leq}10\;at%)$ alloys subjected to annealing treatment at wide temperature range were investigated. For optimally annealed $Fe_{86-x}Al_{4}B_{10}Zr_{x}$ alloys in amorphous state, rather good soft magnetic properties of ${\mu}_{e}=17000~25000,\;H_{c}=20~30$ mOe and $B_{10}{\geq}0.6$ T are obtained. However, as the alloys crystallize, the soft magnetic properties are largely dergely deteriorated, which is attributed principally to the narrow temperature gap between $T_{x1}$ and $T_{x2}$, which allows the nearly co-precipitation of bcc phase and Fe-B compounds in incipient crystallization stage.

  • Polymer-bonded magnetostrictive composites have some distinct advantages over conventional type materials in being cost effective and suitable for high frequency applications due to high electrical resistivity. Composites of rare earth based alloys were reported to show good magnetostrictive characteristics both in static and dynamic conditions [1]. It was originally thought that the application of the polymer-bonding technique to transition metal alloys is straightforward. (omitted)

  • Effects of alloy modification with the $Zr_{0.6}Ti_{0.4}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.4}$ alloy for an electrode use have been investigated. For the alloy composition, a part of Mn was substituted by Co, Cr and Fe. The experimental results showed that Co accelerated activation of alloy, and Fe and Cr improved the discharge capacity. These results agree with P-C-T curves of each alloy. But substituting Fe for Mn showed the decrease of the discharge capacity when discharged at high rate (60mA, about 1C rate). Considering both the discharge capacity and the high rate discharge property, $Zr_{0.6}Ti_{0.4}V_{0.4}Ni_{1.2}Mn_{0.3}Cr_{0.1}$ alloy was found to be the best alloy among the alloys subjected to the test.

  • The temperature-dependent saturation magnetization curves of amorphous $Fe_{80-x}Co_xB_{20}$ (8 ${\le}$ x ${\le}$ 40, the step of x is 8) alloys were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer from 77 K up to 1000 K. Curie temperature and the Bloch coefficient were estimated from the saturation magnetization curves. The low temperature dependence of magnetization is in good agreement with Bloch relation, $M_s(T)$=$M_s(O)$ (1-$BT^{3/2}$ - ${\cdots}.$). The spin wave stiffness constant, tne range of the exchange interaction, and the probable atomic spin were calculated from the saturation magnetization values.

  • In order to investigate the microstructural morphology of the sulfide expected from the Fe-FeS phase diagram, a vacuum-sealed quartz tube where pure iron (99.9%) and sulfur (99.99%) powders were charged was heated upto $1000^{\circ}C$ in the electric resistance furnace, held for 96 hours and quenched in cold water and then, rod specimen was produced. Compositional difference of the sulfur between upper and lower parts of the rod was 7.5wt.% and segregation of the sulfur was gradually increased from the lower part to the upper one of the rod. The rod specimen was divided into three parts by the microstructural morphology of the sulfide. The upper part of the rod specimen revealed single phase FeS intermetallic. In the middle part of the specimen, hyper-eutectic microstructure where primary FeS was precipitated first and then, eutectic of $\alpha$-Fe and FeS was formed in the inter-dendritic region of the FeS. Especially, hypo-eutectic microstructure was appeared in the lower part of the specimen. After primary dendrite of $\alpha$-Fe solidified, FeS dendrite which included small amount of $\alpha$-Fe and FeS eutectic in the inter-dendritic region was formed.

  • A study on the corrosion behavior of Inconel alloys and Incoloy 800H in molten salt of LiCl-$Li_2O$ was investigated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 24-312 hours in an oxidation atmosphere. The order of the corrosion rate was Inconel 600 < Inconel 601 < Incoloy 800H < Inconel 690. Inconel 600 showed the best performance suggesting that the content of Fe, Cr and Ni are the important factor for corrosion resistance in hot molten salt oxidation conditions. The corrosion products of Inconel 600 and Inconel 601 were $Cr_2O_3$ and $NiFe_2O_4$, In case of Inconel 690, a single layer of $Cr_2O_3$ was formed in the early stage of corrosion and an outer layer of $NiFe_2O_4$ and inner layer of $Cr_2O_3$ were formed with an increase of corrosion time. In the case of Incoloy 800H, $Cr_2O_3$ and $FeCr_2O_4$ were observed. Most of the outer scale of the alloys was observed to be spalled from the results of the SEM analysis and the unspalled scale which adhered to the substrate was composed of three layers. The outer layer, the middle one, and the inner one were Fe, Cr, and Ni-rich, respectively. Inconel 600 showed localized corrosion behavior and Inconel 601, 690 and Incoloy 800H showed uniform corrosion behavior. Ni improves the corrosion resistance and too much Cr and/or Fe content deteriorates the corrosion resistance.

  • As a part of assessment of the structural material for the molten salt handling system, corrosion behavior of Inconel 718, X-750, Haynes 75 and Haynes 263 alloys in the molten salt of LiCl-Li$_2$O-O$_2$was investigated in the range of temperature; $650^{\circ}C$, time; 24~168h, $Li_2O$; 3wt%, mixed gas; Ar~10%$O_2$. In the molten salt of LiCl-$Li_2O-O_2$, the order corrosion rate was Haynes 263 < Haynes 75 < Inconel X-750 < Inconel 718. Haynes 263 alloy showed the highest corrosion resistance among the examined alloys. Corrosion products of alloys were as fellows: Haynes 75: $Cr_2O_4$, $NiFe_2O_4$, $LiNiO_2$, $Li_2NiFe_2O_4$, Inconel 718; $Cr_2O_4$, $NiFe_2O_4$, Haynes 263; $Li(Ni,Co)O_2$, $NiCr_2O_4$, $LiTiO_2$, Inconel X-750; $Cr_2O_3$, $NiFe_2O_4$,$FeNi_3$, (Al,Nb,Ti)$O_2$. Haynes 263 showed local corrosion behavior and Haynes 75, Inconel 718 and Inconel X-750 showed uniform corrosion behavior.

  • The defects of partial denture frameworks are mainly shrinkage porosity, inclusions, micro-crack, particles from investment, and dendritic structure. In order to investigate a good casting condition of partial denture frameworks, the three casting alloys and casting methods were used and detected casting defects were analyzed by using electrochemical methods. Three casting alloys (63Co-27Cr-5.5Mo, 63Ni-16Cr, 63Co-30Cr-5Mo) were prepared for fabricating partial denture frameworks with various casting methods; centrifugal casting (Kerr, USA), high frequency induction casting (Jelenko Eagle, USA), vacuum pressure casting (Bego, Germany). The casting temperature was $1,380^{\circ}C$ (63Co-27Cr-5.5Mo and 63Ni-16Cr) and $1,420^{\circ}C$ (63Co-30Cr-5Mo). The casting morphologies were analyzed using FE-SEM and EDX. The corrosion test of the dendritic structure was performed through potentiodynamic method in 0.9% NaCl solutions at $36.5^{\circ}C$ and corrosion surface was observed using SEM. The defects of partial denture frameworks improved in the order of centrifugal casting, high frequency induction casting, and vacuum pressure casting method, especially, pore defects were found at part of clasp in the case of centrifugal casting method. The structure of casting showed dendritic structure for three casting alloys. In the 63Co-27Cr-5.5Mo and 63Co-30Cr-5Mo, $\alpha$-Co and $\varepsilon$-Co phases were identified at matrix and $${\gamma}$-Ni_2$Cr second phase were shown in 63Ni-16Cr. Also, the corrosion resistance of cast structure increased in the order of vacuum pressure casting, high frequency induction casting, and centrifugal casting method.

  • Recent developments in nanocrystalline and nanocomposite rare earth-transition metal magnets are reviewed and emphasis is placed on research work at IFW Dresden. Principal synthesis methods include high energy ball milling, melt spinning, mold casting and hydrogen assisted methods such as reactive milling and hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination. These techniques are applied to NdFeB-, PrFeB- and SmCo-type systems with the aim to produce high remanence magnets with high coercivity. Concepts of maximizing the energy density in nanostructured magnets by either inducing a texture via anisotropic HDDR or hot deformation or enhancing the remanence via magnetic exchange coupling are evaluated. With respect to high temperature applications melt spun $Sm(Co_{0.74}Fe_{0.1}Cu_{0.12}Zr_{0.04})_{7.5}$ ribbons were prepared, which showed coercivities of up to 0.53 T at 50$0^{\circ}C$. Partially amorphous $Nd_{60}Fe_xCo_{30-x}Al_{10}(0{\leq}x{\leq}30)$ alloys were prepared by copper mold casting. The effect of transition metal content on the glass-forming ability and the magnetic properties was investigated. The $Nd_{60}Co_{30}Al_{10}$ alloy exhibits an amorphous structure shown by the corresponding diffraction pattern. A small substitution of Co by 2.5 at.% Fe results In the formation of Fe-rich crystallites embedded in the Nd-rich amorphous matrix. The Fe-rich crystallites show hard magnetic behaviour at room temperature with a coercivity value of about 0.4 T, relatively low saturation magnetization and a Curie temperature of 500 K.

  • The smelting reduction of spent lithium-ion batteries results in metallic alloys containing Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Si. A process to separate metal ions from the sulfuric acid leaching solution of these metallic alloys has been reported. In this process, ionic liquids are employed to separate Fe(III) and Cu(II). In this study, D2EHPA and Cyanex 301 were employed to replace these ionic liquids. Fe(III) and Cu(II) from the sulfate solution were sequentially extracted using 0.5 M D2EHPA with three stages of cross-current and 0.3 M Cyanex 301. The stripping of Fe(III) and Cu(II) from the loaded phases was performed using 50% (v/v) and 60% (v/v) aqua regia solutions, respectively. The mass balance results from this process indicated that the recovery and purity percentages of the metals were greater than 99%.
