Iron (Fe) is an important micronutrient for the health and growth of plants. Iron is usually provided by fertilizers, and iron-chelate fertilizers are well absorbed by plants. This study presents the plant growth-promoting effects of a new functional iron fertilizer, Fe-chelating crab shell powder (FCSP), which is generated from the chelation of Fe ions with crab shell powder. Iron chelate was derived from spent pickling liquor, which is rich in reductive iron, iron(II) oxide. To analyze the effects of FCSP on plant growth, we treated lettuce with several concentrations of FCSP in both lab- and field-scale experiments. In the lab-scale test, the treatment of 50 ppm of FCSP highly promoted growth and resulted in increases in the size, weight, number and chlorophylls content of leaves of plants compared to the treatment of crab shell powder. Fifty ppm of FCSP also increased the size and weight of leaves up to 2 times compared to the application of chemical fertilizer and/or compost in field conditions. In addition, the FCSP treatment resulted in the highest ion uptake of Fe in lettuce leaves. Moreover, FCSP led to increases in the amounts of Fe, Ca, available phosphorus and organic matter in treated soil, indicating that soil quality was improved. Taken together, our results demonstrate that FCSP promotes lettuce growth via enhancement of Fe availability and improves soil quality. Therefore, FCSP can be utilized as a new functional iron fertilizer.
In the oligomerization of p-aminophenol by the catalytic action of Fe-EDTA complex in the aqueous medium, the mixed complex intermediate, Fe-EDTA-M type, is considered to be formed, from which active radicals of the monomer are produced. In this system, polymerization is presumed to proceed as follows: Free radical formation ${\to}$ Coupling ${\to}$ Activation ${\to}$ Coupling, and so on. In this study, the form of the monomer and coordination state in the mixed complex, the catalytic action of Fe-EDTA the complex, the reaction mechanism, and the structure of the oligomers are discussed.
This investigation is to make comparative evaluation of the corrosion inhibiting effects of quinoline, oxine and 7-nitroso 8-hydroxy quinoline (7NHQ). In case of quinoline, and oxine, since the N atom in them functions as cation, the process involved is assumed to be cathode control. On the other hand 7-NHQ was found to form a stable chelate compound with $Fe^{++}$ ion in acidic solution and shows as anode control predominantly. After plotting polarization curves, Tafel parameters were calculated in each solution involving the inhibitors, at the same time corrosion inhibiting effects were separately measured and compared from data of both corrosion current and analytical method.
Stabilities of chelates of 7-nitroso-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonate have been determined for divalent transition metal ions, Mn(Ⅱ), Fe(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), and Zn(Ⅱ) by means of the Calvin-Bjerrum technique. Comparison of these stability constants with those obtained for 8-hydroxyquinoline, and 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonate shows that the observed differences are essentially the results of the lower basicity of the sulfonated group and different metal-ligand bond. The divalent metal chelate stability sequence is not in agreement with the reported metal orders for other chelating agents. The stabilities were found to follow the order Mn(Ⅱ) < Fe(Ⅱ) ${\approx}$ Co(Ⅱ) > Ni(Ⅱ) < Cu(Ⅱ) > Zn(Ⅱ).
A method for the determination of anionic drug, mefenamate with ion-selective electrode using Fe(II)-1,10-phenanthroline chelate as a counter ion was developed. Benzyl nitrophenyl ether (BNPE) plasticized membrane was more selective and sensitive than the other tested membranes. This membrane electrode exhibits a linear response for 10$^{-2}$ M~5 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ M of mefenamic acid with a slope of -61.4 mV/dec. in borate buffer solutions (pH 9.0). Potentiometric selectivity measurements revealed negligible interferences from various organic and ionorganic anions. Direct potentiometry and potentiometric titration method of mefenamic acid in capsule preparations are presented and compared.
The purpose of this study was to find out required time for recovery of nutritional disorder by Fe-DTPA treatment in induced Fe-deficient tomato cultivars and to select stable Fe-chelate in high pH of nutrient solution. The pH levels of nutrient solution were amended with 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0. Then Fe-EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, ferric-sodium salt), Fe-DTPA (Sodium ferric diethylenetriamine pentaacetate), and Fe-EDDHA (Ethylenediamine-N,N-bis (2-hydroxyphenylacetic acid) ferric-sodium salt)) were treated as Fe $2.0mg\;L^{-1}$ concentration. The Fe-DTPA and Fe-EDDHA were stable in the nutrient solution of pH 6.0~8.0 but Fe-EDTA in nutrient solution of pH 8.0 was to become insoluble by 25%. The Fe $2.0mg\;L^{-1}$ as Fe-DTPA was treated for recovery of Fe deficient tomato seedlings. In case of Redyoyo and Supersunroad cultivars, total chlorophyll and Fe contents of leaves were recovered as much as those of normal leaves in 5 days. The Rafito cultivar for complete recovery was taken 7 days. When Fe $2.0mg\;L^{-1}$ as Fe-DTPA was supplied to Fe-deficient tomato seedlings, in geotype, heme oxigenase recovered as much as normal leaves in 24 hours in the Rafito and Redyoyo. However, it was not remarkable difference by elapsed time in the Supersunroad.
Iron and nitrogen coordinated carbon catalyst (Fe-N-C) is the most promising non-precious metal catalyst (NPMC) studied to alternate the Pt-group oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst. In this work, Fe/N/C type catalysts are prepared by four different nitrogen precursors; N, N, N', N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA), 1,2-ethylenediamine (EDA), m-dicyanobenzene (DCB), dicyandiamide (DCDA) which can chelate a transition metal; In addition, the catalysts conducted the pyrolysis process at four different temperatures of 700, 800, 900, 1000 ℃ to investigate the ORR activities depend on pyrolysis temperature and to find an appropriate temperature. The characterizations of catalysts were investigated by scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and element analysis (EA). The electrocatalytic activity was measured by ORR polarization, also the electron transfer number was calculated from the slope of the K-L plot. The FeNC-EDA-800 which were prepared at pyrolysis temperature of 800 ℃ with EDA showed better ORR activity than the other catalysts.
$La_{0.2}Ca_{0.8}MnO_3$ colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) powders and pellets were synthesized by sol-gel process involving a stable metal chelate complex with acetylacetone. The structural changes of reaction mixture were monitored by FT-IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffractometry. The microstructure of sintered samples and the cation composition of gel powder were studied by FE-SEM/EDS and ICP-AES. The magnetic property was investigated as a function of temperature.
In the oligomerization of p-aminophenol under the catalytic action of the metallic complexes, the effects of the ligands are studied. When the initial velocity of $O_2$ uptake at pH 8 using Fe(Ⅲ) as the central metal and N-hydroxylethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid (HEDTA), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), 1,2-cyclohexanediaminetetraacetic acid(CyDTA) as the ligands respectively are compared, the velocities are as the following order: HEDTA > EDTA > DTPA > CyDTA. Further when the effect of the ligands, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), HEDTA, EDTA, and DTPA, on the yields of oligomers are compared, the result shows as the following order: NTA > HEDTA > EDTA > DTPA. These are nearly reverse order of the stability constants of the complexes. In order to determine the composition of the mixed complexes at the initial step, the method of continuous variation is used, and it is found that the composition ratio of Fe-EDTA complex to monomer in the mixed complexes is one at pH 5-8 range. It is also found that at pH 9 or in the more alkaline range, side reactions occur to form water soluble dimer of quinone type and the catalytic action of the metallic complex markedly decreases on account of the hydrolysis of the central metal by the $OH^-$ ion.

$H_2S$ is a detrimental impurity that must be removed for upgrading biogas to biomethane. This study investigates an economic method to mitigate $H_2S$ content, combining scrubbing and aeration. The desulfurization experiments were performed in a laboratory apparatus using EDTA-Fe or landfill leachate as the catalyst and metered mixture of 50-52% (v/v) $CH_4$, 32-33% (v/v) $CO_2$ and 500-1,000 ppmv $H_2S$ balanced by $N_2$ using the C city landfill gas. Dissolved iron concentration in the liquid medium significantly affected the oxidation efficiency of sulfide. Iron components in landfill leachate, which would be available in a biogas/landfill gas utilization facility, was compatible with an external iron chelate. More than 70% of $H_2S$ was removed in a contact time of 9 seconds at iron levels at or over 28 mM. The scrubbing-aeration process would be a feasible and easy-to-operate technology for biogas purification.
