This study is aimed to identify the method to use the CaO-$Al_2O_3$ system of rapidly cooled steel making slag (RCSS) as the environment-friendly inorganic accelerating agent by analyzing its physical and chemical properties. The fraction of rapidly cooled steel making slag is distinguished from its fibrous, and the contents of CaO and $Fe_2O_3$ are inversely proportional across different fractions. In addition, as the content of CaO decreased and the content of $Fe_2O_3$ increased, the loss ignition tended to become negative (-) and the density increased. The pore distribution by mercury intrusion porosimetry is very low as compared to the slowly cooled steel-making slag, which indicates that the internal defect and the microspore rate are remarkably lowered by the rapid cooling. To analyze the major minerals the rapidly cooled steel-making slag, XRD, f-CaO quantification and SEM-EDAX analysis have been performed. The results shows that f-CaO does not exist, and the components are mainly consisted of $C_{12}A_7$ and reactive ${\beta}-C_2S$.
Seed germination rate and seedling growth were measured on 6 different species(Phytolacca americana, Eupatorium rugosum, Rumex acetocella, Echinochloa crusgalli, Cassia mimosoides var. nomame, Setaria viridis) treated with leaf extract of E. rugosum. Total phenolic compound and heavy metal were analyzed on leaf and soil with and without E. rugosum. The growth of P. americana seedlings were stimulated by 10% and 25% of E. rugosum water extract treatment. The content of total phenolic compounds in soil was lower than that of leaf extract, and 25% was confirmed as threshold concentration in natural systems because the total phenolic compounds were not significantly different between the control soils and the soil treated with 10%, and 25% extract. Total phenolic compound concentrations of the leaf extracts were highest (1.66 mg/l) with E. rugosum grown under the Quercus forest canopy and lowest (1.09 mg/l) for the plant grown in the mixed forest edge. Leaf extracts of plants selected in different sampling sites (Forest interior, Forest edge, under Pinus Canopy and Quercus Canopy) were significant, while soil extracts were not. Seed germination of R. acetocella and S. viridis were significantly inhibited at over 50% concentrations of E. rugosum, but C. mimosoides var. nomame was not affected at any concentration. The radicle and shoot growth of the native species group were reduced two times more than those of the exotic species group by the treatment of extracts. Especially, the seed germination percentage and dry weight of E. rugosum were greater than those of the control group by treatments with extracts of 10% and 25%. Analysis of aqueous extracts from E. rugosum by HPLC identified 6 phenolic compounds: caffeic acid (460.9 mg/l), benzoic acid (109.7 mg/l), protocatechuic acid (7.3 mg/l), ρ-hydroquinone (6.0 mg/l), cinnamic acid (2.7 mg/l) and hydroquinone (0.23 mg/l). The seed germination of P. americana was also inhibited dramatically by protocatechuic acid and cinnamic acid even though the content of caffeic acid (460.9 mg/l) was the highest among analyzed phenolic compounds. The heavy metal content of soil without A. altissima was higher than that of soil with E. rugosum. Particularly, Al, Fe and Mn was considerably high and most of the heavy metal were accumulated in leaves where a high level of total phenolic compounds was found.

In this study, we investigated the presence of nitrogen, phosphorus, ions, heavy metals and other contaminations in the water stream and soil of the forest watershed with different geology and vegetations for one year from October 2004 to September 2005. Most of the nitrogen oxide in the soil was in the form of $NO_3^-$, and it appeared that nitrogen contents decreased as the soil depth increased. Nitrogen contents was highest in the basalt area showing 13.3 mg/g in the surface soil and 7.40 mg/g in the subsoil. Phosphorous contents showed no significant variations depending on the soil depth and was higher in the intermediate soil layer(60 cm) than in surface soil (30 cm) in granite and metamorphic rock areas. Nitrogenous compound in the soil water was 8.03 mg/L in the granite area of coniferous forest and 14.79 mg/L in the andesite area of the deciduous forest. Nitrogenous compound in the stream water was 5.53 mg/L in October and 6.99 mg/L in January in the granite area of the coniferous forest and $3.61\sim5.11$ mg/L in the andesite area of the deciduous forest. Phosphates in runoff and stream water were similar in coniferous with in deciduous forests, showing a slight increase(0.090$\sim$0.179 mg/L) in the basalt area. In the coniferous forest, pH showed a significant positive correlation with EC, $Ca^{2+}$ and $Cl^-$ at p < 0.01, and showed a negative correlation with S-Fe and S-Al. Electroconductivity showed a significant correlation of 0.601 with $Ca^{2+}$ and of -0.586 with $NO_3^-$ at p<0.01, and showed a significant correlation of 0.301 with $SO_4^{2-}$ and of -0.295 with S-Fe at p < 0.05. In the deciduous forest, pH showed a positive correlation with $Ca^{2+}$ at p < 0.05, and showed a negative correlation with $K^+$, S-Fe and S-Al at p < 0.01. Electroconductivity showed a significant positive correlation with $Ca^{2+}$ and $Cl^-$ at p < 0.05 and with $NO_3^-$ at p < 0.01.

Identification of various inorganic compound crystals contained in solar salts, which are produced from 12 areas of Jeonnam, was firstly made by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The analysis of the XRD spectra was carried out on the basis of Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS) data and the results of Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDX) measurements. In particular, the analysis of the XRD spectra supported that each solar salt contains $Na_2S$ (Shinan Jeungdo and Sinui), $KMgCl_3$ (Shinan Bigeum), $Ca(ClO_3)_2$ (Shinan Docho), $CaAl_4O_7$ (Haenam Songji), $CaSiO_3$ and $CaCl_2$ (Goheung) as inorganic compound crystals, which have not been reported for the solar salts. Also, the XRD results indicated that the solar salts maintain a cubic NaCl crystal structure without any change of lattice parameters etc. However, it was shown in the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) images that an external form of the solar salts has a lamination layer shape of a cubic structure, which is different from a simple cubic form for the purified salts and the reagent NaCl.

Changes in the microstructures and mechanical properties of an AC2B alloy through solution heat treatment were investigated using recycled AC2B cutting chips as raw material. The as-cast microstructure of the AC2B alloy comprised ${\alpha}$-Al, $Al_2Cu$, and coarse needle-shaped phases considered to be eutectic Si and an Al-Fe-Si based intermetallic compound. After solution heat treatments at $505^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and 6 h, the samples showed complete dissolution of $Al_2Cu$ and relatively fine distribution of intermetallic compounds. Hardness test results showed that the hardness rapidly increased after the solution heat treatment for 1 h by solid solution hardening, and the increase of hardness exhibited a plateau from 1 h to 6 h. The results of the hardness and tensile tests showed that there was no visible difference in the effect of 1 h and 6 h solid solution treatment.
We investigated the effects of Al and Mg on the microstructure and hardness of the coating layer of galvanized steel sheets, by thermodynamic calculations, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and Vickers hardness tests of Zn-0.2Al, Zn-6Al-2Mg, and Zn-10Al-5Mg coating layers. Regardless of the alloy composition of the galvanizing bath, a Fe-Al layer was observed between the coating layer and steel sheet. The Zn-0.2Al coating layer consists of major h.c.p. Zn phase and minor f.c.c. Al phase. The fraction of f.c.c. Al phase (containing a significant amount of Zn) of the coating layer increases with increasing the chemical composition of Al of the galvanizing bath. The h.c.p. MgZn2 phase was formed in the Al/Mg-containing Zn-6Al-2Mg and Zn-10Al-5Mg coating layers, forming Zn-Al-MgZn2 eutectic microstructure. The primary MgZn2 phase was additionally formed in the Zn-10Al-5Mg coating layers containing high concentrations of Al and Mg. The Vickers hardness values of Zn-0.2Al, Zn-6Al-2Mg, and Zn-10Al-5Mg coating layers were 59.1 ± 1.2 HV, 161.2 ± 5.7 HV, and 215.5 ± 40.3 HV, respectively. The addition of Al and Mg increased the hardness of the coating layer by increasing the fraction of the Al phase (containing Zn) and MgZn2 intermetallic compound, which were harder than the Zn phase.
This paper describes a study on the effects of $Mg_2Si_{(p)}$ addition on the microstructure, porosity, and mechanical properties namely hardness and tensile properties of AA332 composite. Each composite respectively contains 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt% reinforcement particles developed by a stir-casting. The molten composite was stirred at 600 rpm and melted at $900^{\circ}C{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. The $Mg_2Si$ particles were wrapped in an aluminum foil to keep them from burning when melting. The findings revealed that the microstructure of $Mg_2Si_{(p)}/AA332$ consists of ${\alpha}$-Al, binary eutectic ($Al+Mg_2Si$), $Mg_2Si$ particles, and intermetallic compound. The intermetallic compound was identified as Fe-rich and Cu-rich, formed as polygonal or blocky, Chinese script, needle-like, and polyhendrons or "skeleton like". The porosity of $Mg_2Si_{(p)}/AA332$ composite increased from 8-10% and the density decreased from 9-12% from as-cast. Mechanical properties such as hardness increased for over 42% from as-cast and the highest UTS, elongation, and maximum Q.I were achieved in the sample of 10% $Mg_2Si$. The study concludes that combined with AA332, the amount of 10 wt% of$Mg_2Si$ is a suitable reinforcement quantity with the combination ofAA332.

This study investigated the effect of nitriding on the hardness and adhesion properties of $TiB_2$ coatings. Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) was used for both nitriding and deposition. By applying ICP, H13 steel was nitrided at a high rate of $50\;{\mu}m/hr$. After nitriding, a Fe4N compound layer or a diffusion layer was formed according to the hydrogen/nitrogen ratio. Both layers could improve the load-bearing capacity of the substrate by increasing the substrate hardness. The adhesion of the $TiB_2$ coatings increased to $\~30N$ after nitriding, but the hardness of the coating was lowered to 20-30 GPa. However, the adhesion of the $TiB_2$ coatings with a high hardness (>60 GPa) could not be improved substantially by nitriding due to the large difference in hardness between the coating and the substrate. The grain size of the $TiB_2$ coating was larger on the nitrided substrates, resulting in a decrease in the hardness of the coating.

A duplex surface treatment process of simultaneous aluminizing-chromizing process followed by plasma nitriding was performed on AISI HI3 steel and STS 403 steel. The properties of these duplex-treated steels were investigated and were compared with those of steels treated by single process of either simultaneous aluminizing-chromizing or plasma nilriding, in terms of microstructure, microhardness and high temperature wear resistance. Sim~dtaneous alumizing-chromizing process was done using a 2-step coating cycle and plasma nitriding process was done at $530^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hour. AISI HI3 steel and STS 403 steel showed a FeA1 compound layer of approximately 350$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness on the surface after simultaneous diffusion coating and nitrided layer of approximately 70-80$\mu\textrm{m}$ formed after the subsequent plasma nitriding process. The microhardness was improved much more by the duplex surface heatment than only by plasma nitriding. In addition the duplex treated specimens showed an improved high temperature wear resistance.
Dissimilar joining of AI 6013-T4 alloys and austenite stainless steel was carried out using friction stir welding technique. Microstructures near the weld zone and mechanical properties of the joint have been investigated. Microstructures in the stainless steel side and AI alloy were depended on the thermo-mechanical condition which they received. TEM micrographs revealed that the interface region was composed of the mixed layers of elongated stainless steel and ultra-fine grained AI alloy and intermetallic compound layer which was identified as the $Al_{4}Fe$ with hexagonal close packed structure. Mechanical properties were lower than those of 6013 AI alloy base metal, because tool inserting location was deviated to AI alloy from the butt line, which resulted in the lack of the stirring.
