  • In this study, nine heavy metals were analyzed in seaweeds collected from market and laver culture farm of Korea and a food safety assessment were also carried out for these heavy metals. The level of heavy metal concentrations in seaweeds was in the following order: Fe>As>Zn>Cu>Cd>Pb>Cr>Ni>Hg. Except for zinc and cadmium, seven heavy metals were significantly higher in cultured laver than in processed laver. Significant correlation was observed Cr-Fe in cultured laver and Cu-Zn, Cd-Cu, Cd-Zn and Pb-Ni in processed laver and Cu-Cr, Cu-Zn, Cd-Cr and Ni-Fe in sea tangle and Zn-Fe, Cr-Fe, Cr-Zn, Cd-Ni, Cu-Cd and Cu-Pb in processed sea mustard. Considering differences in heavy metal concentration between processed laver and cultured laver and in correlation among heavy metals, removal efficiency of heavy metals may be attributed to seaweed treatment process. The average weekly intakes of Cu, Cd, Zn, Fe and Hg via seaweeds consumption were about 0.1~7.6% of PTWI (Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intakes). Therefore, it was found that heavy metals in the seaweeds were very safe for consumption.

  • The electro-magnetic properties of the Mn-Zn ferrite single crystal with small variation of Fe2O3 concentration at the high permeability composition, 53mol% Fe2O3-28.5mol% MnO-18.5mol% ZnO, have been studied for the VCR magnetic head application. With the increase of the Fe2O3 concentration, the Fe2+ concentration increased, the specific resistivity decreased, the secondary maximum permeability shifted to the lower temperature, and the initial permeability decreased. It was concluded that the small variation of $\pm$0.5mol% Fe2O3 concentration greatly affected the electro-magnetic properties of Mn-Zn ferrite single crystals. At the composition of 53mol% Fe2O3, the initial permeability was comparatively high (650 at 5MHz) and its temperature dependence was small.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of different levels of protein and iron in the diet upon Fe, Cu and Zn metabolism in rat during four weeks of growing period. Forty-five male weanling rats of Sprague-Dawley strain weighing $68.5{\pm}1.1g$ were divided into 9 groups and each group was given with one of the 9 different kinds of diets for four weeks. The three dietary protein levels used were 5, 20 and 40% and Fe levels 0, 35, and 350 ppms. The results obtained were summarized as following ; 1) Food intake and body weight gain in 20%(SP) and 40%(HP) dietary protein groups tended to be significantly higher than 5%(LP) protein groups. Protein efficiency ratio (PER) was higher in LP groups than in HP and SP groups. With dietary Fe levels, there were no significant differences among groups in food intake, body weight gain, and PER. 2) In LP groups, the Fe concentrations in liver, kidney, and hind limb muscle were higher than in SP and HP groups. Regarding with dietary protein levels, the liver Cu concentrations in LP groups were slightly higher, but the liver Zn concentrations were lower in LP groups. The Fe concentrations in liver and kidney tended to decrease with decrease in dietary Fe levels, but Cu and Zn concentrations showed no consistent tendency with dietary Fe levels. 3) The Fe, Cu and Zn concentrations in serum were not different from dietary treatments except that the serum Fe concentrations increased slightly in LP groups. 4) The Fe and Cu concentrations in urine tended to be higher in HP groups. Fecal Cu and Zn concentrations showed no significant differences in dietary protein or Fe levels, but the Fe concentrations tended to increase with increase in dietary Fe levels.

  • $Fe_3O_4$ having half metallic property is one of the efficient spin filtering materials which are widely used in spintronic research field and ZnO is wide band gap semiconductor which can be used by tunnel barrier or semiconductor channel in spin MOSFET. We investigated the magnetic and the electric properties of $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayer fabricated on c-$Al_2O_3$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). For multilayer films, PLD was performed at variable temperatures such as $200{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ and at target distance from 40 to 80 mm, KrF eximer laser of 1.5 $J/cm^2$ and a reputation rate of 2Hz. $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayers were deposited at $4{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr. After fabricating $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayers, $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayers were treated by RTA(Rapid Thermal Annealing) at various temperature to change magnetic phase. The magnetism of the multilayer is changed by thickness of the ZnO tunnel barrier. Magnetic phase of FexOy showed a very small magnetism due to $Fe_2O_3$ ${\alpha}$-phase, but large magnetism from $Fe_3O_4$ or $Fe_2O_3$ ${\gamma}$-phase was observed. In the present study, effect of the ZnO thickness on the MR (magnetoresistance) ratio was investigated in detail.

  • The ZnFe2O4 powder were prepared under glycothermal conditions by precipitation from metal nitrates with aqueous potassium hydroxide. Ultrafine particles of the ZnFe2O4 were obtained at temperatures as low as 225-300$^{\circ}C$. The microstructure and phase of the ZnFe2O4 powder was studied by SEM and XRD. The properties of the powder were studied as a function of various parameters (reaction temperature, reaction time, solid loading). The average particle diameter of the ZnFe2O4 increased with increasing reaction temperature. After glycothermal treatment at 270$^{\circ}C$ for 8hrs., the average particle diameter of the ZnFe2O4 was about 50 nm.

  • This pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of systematic variation appling of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn on forage performance of orchardgrass and white clover. The treatments of systematic variation were 0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25, and $100/0\%$ in the Fe/Cu(trial-1), Mn/Zn(trial-2), and Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn(trial-3), respectively. The treatments of Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn(trial-4) were $70\%$ in main-element and $10\% in other 3 sub-elements, respectively. 1. Compared with orchadgrass, white clover showed relatively consistent differences in the content of micronutrients as influenced by treatments of the systematic variation. The contents of Mn and Cu in the forages were significantly influenced by the application rates of Mn and Cu, respectively. The contents of Fe and Zn in the forages, however, were not significantly different among these treatments. 2. Compared with orchardgrass in the Fe/cu trial, white clover had not only the low content of Cu but also the Cu content and yield of white clover were greatly decreased by the low rate of application of Cu. In the Mn/Zn trial, the $0/100\%$ resulted in the severe decrease of Mn-content in both forages. The low content of Mn in white clover tended to be negatively correlated to the Mn-chlorosis, inferior growth and flowering, and low yield. 3. In the Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn trial, the application with $0/100\%$ and $0/100\%$ resulted in the relatively great decrease of Cu and Mn contents, respectively. These traits in white clover tended to be negatively correlated to the inferior growth and flowering, and low yield 4. In the Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn trial, the content of every main-elements in the forages were increased especially in Mn. In addition, the contents of sub-elements were likely to be somewhat negatively influenced by the treatment of main-element respectively.

Effects of Systematic Variation Application of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn on the Contents of N-compounds(Crude/Pure Protein) in Orchardgrass and White Clover (Fe, Mn, Cu 및 Zn의 Systematic Variation 시비가 Orchardgrass 및 White Clover의 질소화합물(조/순단백질) 함량에 미치는 영향)

The treatments of systematic variation were 0/100, 25/75, 50/50. 75/25, and $100/0\%$ in the Fe/Cu(trial-1). Mn/Zn(trial-2), and Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn(trial-3), respectively The treatments of Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn(trial-4) were composed of $70\%$ for main element and $10\%$ for other 3 elements, respectively. 1. The contents of N-compounds in forages tended to be in inverse proportion to the yields. In the Mn/Zn trial, the 0/l00 to white clover resulted in the relatively high contents of soluble N-compounds and low ratio of pure protein/soluble N-compounds in company with a severe yield decrease. 2. In the Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn trial, the 0/100 and 100/0 resulted in the somewhat high contents of N-compounds in white clover. It was likely to be caused by the concentration effect derived from yield decrease. In addition, the 100/0 resulted in the relatively high content of soluble N-compounds and low ratio of pure protein/soluble N-compounds. The protein synthesis in white clover was likely to be negatively influenced by the 100/0. 3. In the Fe/Mn/Cu/Zn trial, white clover showed the low contents of crude and pure protein at the 1st cut. It was likely to be caused by the unbalanced mutual ratios derived from the high application levels of each single element. 4. In white clover at the 5th cut, the 0/100 of Mn/Zn and 100/0 of Fe+Cu/Mn+Zn resulted in the relatively high content of K. It was likely to be caused by the concentration effect derived from yield decrease.
