This study considers to electrical resistivity characteristics for clay minerals types and contents in fractured and fault zone. The electrical resistivity is measured for an artificial agar specimen with clay minerals instead of a natural rock. The artificial agar specimen with clay minerals was special worked in study. The clay minerals used are Kaolinite and Montmorillonite in test, the clay mineral contents increases until $0\~40\%$ to the same specimen. As results, the electrical resistivity of the specimen decreased gradually as the clay mineral contents increases for all types of clay minerals. Montmorillonite shows remarkably lower resistivity than Kaolinite, although its clay content is fewer than that of Kaolinite. Also, a proposed experimental expression shows a good correlation coefficient as high as 0.89 or more in all clay minerals.
A low resistivity zone is found in many places such as a fractured fault zone, weathered zone and aquifer. The electrical resistivity is influenced mainly by pore fluid as well as the clay mineral types and contents, Hence, it is very important to understand the relationship between the electrical resistivity and clay contents associated with the low resistivity zone for geotechnical applications such as civil engineering. This study examines the characteristics of clay mineral types and contents to electrical resistivity through sample measurements, and proposes an expression relating the resistivity and clay content. The electrical resistivity is measured for an artificial agar specimen with clay minerals instead of a natural rock. The clay minerals used are Kaolinite and Montmorillonite. Montmorillonite shows remarkably lower resistivity than Kaolinite, although its clay content is fewer than that of Kaolinite. Also, the proposed expression shows a good correlation coefficient as high as 0.89 or more in all clay minerals.
Here we firstly present that a timing of reactivated event of Yangsan fault, the major fault in the southeastern Korean Peninsula, by using combined approaches of the optimized illite-polytype quantification, the K-Ar age-dating, and the recently developed illite-age-analysis (IAA) approach for the fault clays from Sangcheon-ri area of Yangsan main fault line. Two chronological record of brittle fault-activation event at about 41.5~43.5 and 50.7 Ma were determined from 3 fault gouges suggesting a crucial reactivation time-scheme. Furthermore, the regional processes that drive tectonics to form and reactivate the Yangsan fault may be explained from the chronological analysis for additional sites along the Yangsan fault.

To be design the slope, the area distributed the shale or mica schist which was metamorphosed by shale must carefully consider the stability. The shale has the detrital materials of which the grain size are 1/256mm and fissility. As the reason the slope of shale is always unstable by bedding slip and fissility but also the joint and fault. Mica schist is also another unstable rock for slope by schistosity, cleavage, axial plane of a fold etc. In general shale and mica schist contain the swelling clay minerals such as smectite, vermiculite and montmorillonite. These minerals make the slope unstable. At OO tunnel construction area for the rail way of the Kyungbu high speed train, the slope of mica schist is very unstable by the distribution phenomena of the discontinuous plane such as joints which are 1-5cm spacing and thrust and strike-slip fault. By the drilling core of this area, most RQD have 0-20%.
Turkey is one of the most important earthquake regions in Europe. This region has been exposed to many earthquakes of different magnitudes from past to present. It is of great importance to determine the dynamic properties of the soils for structures to be built in earthquake zones. In order to minimize the damages that may occur, the behavior of the soils under repeated loads should be known and taken into consideration in the design. In this study, 4 different point borings were taken near active fault lines in the North Anatolian fault zone (NAFZ). In order to determine the dynamic parameters of soils, both dynamic triaxial (TRX) and resonant column (RC) tests were carried out on undisturbed samples at every 5 m. As a result of the experiments, Vs and Gmax values were obtained from the field and differences were determined. The dynamic behavior of the soil was examined at varying depths with the comparison of reference models in the literature and compatible results were obtained. Finally, the behavior at the transition region is highlighted. As a result, three shear modulus and dumping ratio models have been proposed for clay soils to be used in different soil conditions.

This study is an analysis of slope failure examples of cut sedimentary hills during construction road in Kyoungsang Basin, especially Yangsan Fault system (Ilkwang-Dongrae fault). This area involved a lot of hillslope failures compared to other areas during road construction. The exposed failure slopes were first face-mapped, and then back analyzed based on the limit equilibrium method to assess the shear strength parameters of discontinuity (bedding). The results of this analysis indicate that the shear strength parameters of discontinuity (bedding) are significantly smaller than those used in the design stage and presented in the existing works. The filling in the bedding and emerging groundwater may be decreasing strength parameters. Especially, the clay in the bedding plays a key role in the effect of the shear strength. The study also suggests that the bedding angle and the internal friction angle are proportional to each other. Using this relationship and knowing the bedding angle, the friction can easily be estimated.
This study presents an application of hydro-mechanical coupled Particle Flow Code 3D (PFC3D) to simulation of fluid injection induced fault slip experiment conducted in Mont Terri Switzerland as a part of a task in an international research project DECOVALEX-2019. We also aimed as identifying the current limitations of the modelling method and issues for further development. A fluid flow algorithm was developed and implemented in a 3D pore-pipe network model in a 3D bonded particle assembly using PFC3D v5, and was applied to Mont Terri Step 2 minor fault activation experiment. The simulated results showed that the injected fluid migrates through the permeable fault zone and induces fault deformation, demonstrating a full hydro-mechanical coupled behavior. The simulated results were, however, partially matching with the field measurement. The simulated pressure build-up at the monitoring location showed linear and progressive increase, whereas the field measurement showed an abrupt increase associated with the fault slip We conclude that such difference between the modelling and the field test is due to the structure of the fault in the model which was represented as a combination of damage zone and core fractures. The modelled fault is likely larger in size than the real fault in Mont Terri site. Therefore, the modelled fault allows several path ways of fluid flow from the injection location to the pressure monitoring location, leading to smooth pressure build-up at the monitoring location while the injection pressure increases, and an early start of pressure decay even before the injection pressure reaches the maximum. We also conclude that the clay filling in the real fault could have acted as a fluid barrier which may have resulted in formation of fluid over-pressurization locally in the fault. Unlike the pressure result, the simulated fault deformations were matching with the field measurements. A better way of modelling a heterogeneous clay-filled fault structure with a narrow zone should be studied further to improve the applicability of the modelling method to fluid injection induced fault activation.
Numerous clay veins along fractures such as fault, joints, cracks and small fissures are found in granitic rocks in the Korean Peninsula. Granitic rocks of three geological stages (Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene) occur in the Korean Peninsula, and are known as the Daebo, Bulguksa and Hoam granites, respectively. Specimens from clay veins composed or mainly mica clay mineral (illite) were dated using the K-Ar method with the hosted granitoids. The respective ages were as follows. Jurassic: granites 143.7 Ma and 160 Ma, clay mineral veins 104 Ma and 107 Ma: Cretaceous: granite 133.2 Ma, clay mineral veins 93.6 Ma, 84.2 Ma and 84.3 Ma: Paleogene: granite 39.7 Ma and 35.4Ma, clay mineral veins 27.1 Ma and 23.9 Ma. The ages of the clay veins in the Korean Peninsula are clearly much younger than those of their hosted granitoids. This contrasts with data for similar clay veins in Cretaceous and Paleogene granitoids in southwest Japan, where the K-Ar ages of mica clay minerals are slightly younger than their host rocks, or are almost the same.
A fault gouge zone which is about 25cm thick crops out along a small valley in Yangbuk-myeon, Gyeongju city. It is divided into greenish brown gouge and bluish gray gouge by color. Under the microscope, the gouges have a lot of porphyroclasts composed of old gouge fragments, quartz, feldspar and iron minerals. Clay minerals are abundant in matrix, defining strikingly P foliation by preferred orientation. Microstructural differences between bluish pay gouge and greenish brown gouge are as follows: greenish brown gouge compared to bluish gray gouge is (1) rich in clay minerals, (2) small in size and number of porphyroclasts, and (3) plentiful in iron minerals which are mostly hematites, while chiefly pyrites in bluish gray gouge. Hematites are considered to be altered from pyrites in the early-formed greenish brown gouge under the influence of hydrothermal fluids accompanied during the formation of bluish gray gouge that also precipitated pyrites. It is believed that the fault core including bluish gray gouge zone and greenish brown gouge zone was formed by progressive cataclastic flow. In the first stage the fault core initiates from damage zone of early faulting. In the second stage damage zone actively transforms into breccia zone by repeated fracturing. The third stage includes greenish brown (old) gouge formation in the center of the fault core mainly by particle grinding. In the third stage further deformation leads to the formation of new (bluish gray) gouge zone while old gouge zone undergoes strain hardening. Consequently, the whole gouge zone in the core widens.

In September 2007, the collapses of slopes and landslides are happened at Jeonlanamdo due to heavy rains accompanied with Typoon "Nari". The study area is the tunnel portal slope in new road construction site. This slope consists of pyroclastic rocks and has lots of faults. Particularly, the residual soils of the slope is deteriorated with yellowish mudstone layer as a results of chemical and physical weathering. This has a variety of swelling clay minerals and might be moved easily down at the gentle terrain. The inner factor of $\bigcirc\bigcirc$tunnel portal slope's collapse is the geological weak zone, the convergent topography, the inferiority of drainage and the heavy rain act on the failure as direct trigger.
