In this study, EMTP(Electromagnetic Transients Program) which is one of the most well-known computer simulation methods is used to collect the data for a power plant fault. EMTP is the program for an interpretation of the phenomena of electric transients, and is designed to manifest the data of the electric current and voltage etc. at the time of a power plant fault. By EMTP, I analyze the properties of the heat energy which are transferred from the electrics when a power plant fault brings out. In terms of the results of this study, it is able to measure the heat energy at a power plant fault (power transformer) and to be acquired of the related data. And moreover, these data are expected to be used as a standard for the protection of the fire owing to a high voltage power transformer fault.

Inverters are considered the basic building blocks of industrial electrical drive systems that are widely used for various applications; however, the failure of electronic switches mainly affects the constancy of these inverters. For safe and reliable operation of an electrical drive system, faults in power electronic switches must be detected by an efficient system that is capable of identifying the type of faults. In this paper, an open switch fault identification technique for a three-phase inverter is presented. Single, double, and triple switching faults can be diagnosed using this method. The detection mechanism is based on stator current analysis. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) using Daubechies is performed on the Clarke transformed (-) stator current and features are extracted from the wavelets. An artificial neural network is then used for the detection and identification of faults. To prove the feasibility of this method, a Simulink model of the DWT-based feature extraction scheme using a neural network for the proposed fault detection system in a three-phase inverter with an induction motor is briefly discussed with simulation results. The simulation results show that the designed system can detect faults quite efficiently, with the ability to differentiate between single and multiple switching faults.

A considerable amount of research material discussing designs and properties of High Temperature Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (HTS FCL) is available. However, a shortage of research concerning positioning of HTS FCL in power grid is felt. In this paper a feasibility study of HTS FCL positioning in Smart Grid through simulation analysis is carried out. A complete power network (including generation, transmission and distribution) is modeled in Simulink / SimPowerSystems. A generalized HTS FCL is also designed by integrating Simulink and SimPowerSystem blocks. The distribution network of the model has a wind turbine attached to it forming a micro grid. Three phase fault have been simulated along with placing FCL models at key points of the distribution grid. It is observed that distribution grid, having distributed generation sources attached to it, must not have a single FCL located at the substation level. Optimized HTS FCL location regarding the best fault current contribution from wind turbine has been determined through simulation analysis.
In this paper, a fault location algorithm is suggested for line to line faults in distribution networks. Conventional fault location algorithms use the symmetrical component transformation, a very useful tool for transmission network analysis. However, its application is restricted to balanced network only. Distribution networks are, in general, operated in unbalanced manners, therefore, conventional methods cannot be applied directly, which is the reason why there are few research results on fault location in distribution networks. Especially, the line to line fault is considered as a more difficult subject. The proposed algorithm uses direct 3-phase circuit analysis, which means it can be applied not only to balanced networks but also to unbalanced networks like distribution a network. The comparisons of simulation results between one of conventional methods and the suggested method are presented to show its effectiveness and accuracy.
This paper describes an interactive educational software developed at Konkuk University. This software provides an educational opportunity for electrical engineering students at the junior level to expand their knowledge about fault analysis in power systems. The developed educational software has three main modules: 1) Z-building, 2) setting the type and location of the fault, 3) displaying the calculated fault currents, according to the given simulation options. The main features of this tool are the diversification of acquisition network data, the function of learning about the z-building procedures, and the dynamic display function of state vectors-all voltage/current phasor. To verity the effectiveness of the developed educational software, some case studies are performed.
A method for faulted line detection of four parallel lines on the same tower is presented, based on four-summing and double-differential sequences of one terminal current. Four-summing and double-differential sequences of fault current can be calculated using a certain transformation matrix for parameter decoupling of four parallel transmission lines. According to fault boundary conditions, the amplitude and phase characteristics of four-summing and double-differential sequences of fault current is studied under conditions of different types of fault. Through the analysis of the relationship of terminal current and fault current, a novel methodology for fault line detection of four parallel transmission line on the same tower is put forward, which can pick out the fault lines no matter the fault occurs in single line or cross double lines. Simulation results validate that the methodology is correct and reliable under conditions of different load currents, transient resistances and fault locations.
This paper analyzes a asymmetry current with SFCL (Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) operation during transient period, when a fault occurs in power systems. The principle of asymmetry current nature is reviewed and asymmetry components reduction with SFCL operation is explained. To verify the performance of SFCL, a EMTP/ATPDraw model of SFCLs using MODELS language developed and simulated. Throughout the simulation, results presents the main factors for reducing the asymmetry component of fault current are not a quenching time, but a limiting resistance of SFCL and fault initiated angle.
This paper presents a new approach for simulating the internal faults of synchronous machines using distributed computing and Large Change Sensitivity (LCS) analysis. LCS analysis caters for a parallel solution of 3-phase model of a faulted machine within the symmetrical component-based model of interconnected network. The proposed method considers dynamic behavior of the faulty machine and connected system and tries to accurately solve the synchronous machine’s internal fault conditions in the system. The proposed method is implemented in stand-alone FORTRAN-based phasor software and the results have been compared with available recordings from real networks and precisely simulated faults by use of the ATP/EMTP as a time domain software package. An encouraging correlation between the simulation results using proposed method, ATP simulation and measurements was observed and reported. The simplified approach also enables engineers to quickly investigate their particular cases with a reasonable precision.
On-line monitoring of fault discharge is an important approach for indicating the condition of electrical insulation of stator winding in high voltage motor. In this paper, several key aspects of on-line monitoring system are discussed, involving the characteristics of fault discharge of stator winding in high voltage motor, spectrum analysis of four simulation fault signals, feature extraction of internal fault discharge from apply voltage to breakdown. The study of the partial discharge activities allows to highlight the ageing stage in the winding fault under test. During the life of the winding insulation fault, the shape of PD signal change relating to the ageing stage. The ageing of stator winding insulation fault of high voltage motor is investigated based on the characteristics of partial discharge pulse distribution and statistical parameters, such as maximum, skewness and kurtosis using discrete wavelet transform coefficients.
When the inter-turn short circuit (ITSC) fault occurs, the distortion of the magnetic field is serious. The motor loss variations of each part are obvious, and the motor temperature field is also affected. In order to obtain the influence of the ITSC fault on the motor temperature distribution, firstly, the normal and the fault finite element models of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) were established. The magnetic density distribution and the eddy current density distribution were analyzed, and the mechanism of loss change was revealed. The effects of different forms and degrees of the fault on the loss were obtained. Based on the loss analysis, the motor temperature field calculation model was established, and the motor temperature change considering the loop current was analyzed. The influence of the fault on the motor temperature distribution was revealed. The sensitivity factors that limit the motor continuous operation were obtained. Finally, the correctness of the simulation was verified by experiments. The conclusions obtained are of great significance for the fault and high temperature demagnetization of the permanent magnet analysis.
