Simulated Fault Injection Using Simulator Modification Technique

  • In the current very deep submicron technology era, fault tolerant mechanisms perform an essential function to cope with the effects of soft errors. To evaluate the effectiveness of the fault tolerant mechanism, reliability engineers use simulated fault injections using either saboteur modules or mutants in the simulation model. However, the two methods suffer from both inefficiency in the simulation mechanism and difficulties with the experimental setups. To overcome these inefficiencies, we propose the Verilog-based simulated fault injection (VFI) technique. VFI has the following advantages. First, modification of the design model is unnecessary. Second, the fault injection simulation procedure is simple and efficient. Third, various types of fault injection experiments can be performed. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, we developed a VFI environment using the ICARUS Verilog Simulator. From the experimental results, we were able to qualitatively evaluate the reliability of the target simulation models and to assess the effectiveness of the employed fault-tolerance mechanisms.

  • This paper presents the problem of fault-tolerant robust supervisory control of timed discrete event systems (DESs). First the concept of faults is quantitatively defined in timed DESs and fault tolerable event sequences are presented as a desired legal language. Given a timed DES with model uncertainty, the conditions for the existence of a supervisor which always guarantees fault tolerable event sequences embedded in the system are derived.

  • In this paper, an integrated design of fault detection, diagnosis and reconfigurable control tot multi-input and multi-output system is proposed. It is based on the interacting multiple model estimation algorithm, which is one of the most cost-effective adaptive estimation techniques for systems involving structural and/or parametric changes. This research focuses on the method to recover the performance of a system with failed actuators by switching plant models and controllers appropriately. The proposed scheme is applied to a fault tolerant control design for flight control system.

Simplified Impedance Modeling and Analysis for Inter-Turn Fault of IPM-type BLDC motor

  • This paper proposes a finite element method (FEM)-based model of an interior permanent magnet (IPM)-type BLDC motor having stator inter-turn faults. We also propose impedance modeling of the magnetic characteristics. By integrating the developed model with a current-controlled voltage source inverter (CCVSI) model, the distributed characteristics of an inter-turn fault operated by a six-switch inverter are investigated considering speed control. Moreover, this paper presents the flux density distribution and torque characteristics for analyzing the inter-turn fault of an IPM-type BLDC motor. Additionally, fault impedance is required to calculate the circulating current that causes magnetic distortion. Thus, this paper proposes a method for estimating the circulating current taking into account the voltage at the shorted turn and the rotating speed. The analysis data were verified experimentally.

  • This study suggests the hybrid fault diagnosis method of signed digraph (SDG) and partial least squares (PLS). SDG offers a simple and graphical representation for the causal relationships between process variables. The proposed method is based on SDG to utilize the advantage that the model building needs less information than other methods and can be performed automatically. PLS model is built on local cause-effect relationships of each variable in SDG. In addition to the current values of cause variables, the past values of cause and effect variables are inputted to PLS model to represent the Process armies. The measured value and predicted one by dynamic PLS are compared to diagnose the fault. The diagnosis example of CSTR shows the proposed method improves diagnosis resolution and facilitates diagnosis of masked multiple-fault.

  • This paper presents a fault detection and diagnosis methodologies based on weighted symptom model and pattern matching between the coming fault propagation trend and the simulated one. At the first step, backward chaining is used to find the possible cause candidates for the faults. The weighted symptom model(WSM) is used to generate those candidates. The weight is determined from dynamic simulation. Using WSMs, the methodology can generate the cause candidates and rank them according to the probability. Secondly, the fault propagation trends identified from the partial or complete sequence of measurements are compared to the standard fault propagation trends stored a priori. A pattern matching algorithm based on a number of triangular episodes is used to effectively match those trends. The standard trends have been generated using dynamic simulation and stored a priori. The proposed methodology has been illustrated using two case studies and showed satisfactory diagnostic resolution.

  • Nowadays, one of the serious problems in KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Co-Operation) system is the more higher fault current than the SCC(Short Circuit Capacity) of circuit breaker. There are many alternatives to reduce the increased fault current such as isolations of bus ties, enhancement of SCC of circuit breaker, applications of HVDC-BTB(High Voltage Direct Current-Back to Back) and FCL(fault current limiter). But, these alternatives have some drawbacks in viewpoints of system stability and cost. As the superconductivity technology has been developed, the HTS-FCL(High Temperature Superconductor -Fault Current Limiter) can be one of the attractive alternatives to solve the fault current problem. Under this background, this paper presents the EMTDC(Electro-Magnetic Transient Direct Current) model for resistance type HTS-FCL considering the nonlinear characteristic of final resistance value when quenching phenomena occur.

  • In this paper an ANFIS(Adativo Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System)- based fault detection and diagnosis for a closed loop control system is proposed. The proposed diagnostic system contains two ANFIS. One is run as a parallel model within the model in closed loop control(MCL) and the other is run as a series-parallel model within the process in closed loop(PCL) for the generation of relevant symptoms for fault diagnosis. These symptoms are further processed by another classification logic with simple rules and neural network for process and controller fault diagnosis. Experimental results for a DC shunt motor control system illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed diagnostic scheme.

  • For fault diagnosis of machines and equipments, knowledge-based method has been used widely but has some limitations for complex systems. These can be covered by model-based method. As one kind of model-based method, Qualitative modeling diagnosis method is developed in this research. The developed method uses output signal only. In this method quantization of the output signal mattes automata which can characterize the flow of the signal pattern to normal and fault respectively. As an example of the qualitative diagnosis method, an electric tool which has faults at gear and bearing were examined in this research. The result shows that the developed method can diagnose the fault clearly for the two fault cases.

R-type HTS-FCL Model considering transient characteristics

To evaluate the accurate transient performance of resistance type HTS-FCL, it is needed that the dynamic simulation model considering transient characteristics during quenching and recovery state. Under this background, this paper presents the EMTDC model for resistance type HTS-FCL considering the nonlinear characteristic of final resistance value when quenching and recovery phenomena by fault current injection and clearing occurs.
