Strength estimation for FRP wrapped reinforced concrete columns

  • Fiber-Reinforced Plastics (FRP) have received significant attention for use in civil infrastructure due to their unique properties, such as the high strength-to-weight ratio and stiffness-to-weight ratio, corrosion and fatigue resistance, and tailorability. It is well known that FRP wraps increase the load-carrying capacity and the ductility of reinforced concrete columns. A number of researchers have explored their use for seismic components. The application of concern in the present research is on the use of FRP for corrosion protection of reinforced concrete columns, which is very important in cold-weather and coastal regions. More specifically, this work is intended to give practicing engineers with a more practical procedure for estimating the strength of a deficient column rehabilitated using FRP wrapped columns than those currently available. To achieve this goal, a stress-strain model for FRP wrapped concrete is proposed, which is subsequently used in the development of the moment-curvature relations for FRP wrapped reinforced concrete column sections. A comparison of the proposed stress-strain model to the test results shows good agreement. It has also been found that based on the moment-curvature relations, the balanced moment is no longer a critical moment in the interaction diagram. Besides, the enhancement in the loading capacity in terms of the interaction diagram due to the confinement provided by FRP wraps is also confirmed in this work.

표면상태에 따른 고장력볼트 마찰이음부의 거동특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of High-Tension Bolted Joints' Behavior due to Surface Condition)

  • 본 연구에서는 숏브라스트한 후 무기징크 페인트로 도장한 무기징크면, 연마면, 흑피면에 대하여 정적 및 피로시험을 수행하여 기존의 연구결과와 비교평가함으로써 마찰면의 표면상태에 따른 고장력볼트 마찰이음부의 정적 및 피로거동을 규명하고자 하였다. 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 일련의 정적 및 피로시험을 실시하고 토크관리법의 타당성 평가, 미끄러짐계수의 도출, 도입축력의 감소률 규명, 피로강도의 평가, 마찰면의 압축력 분포 조사 등을 수행하였다. 본 실험결과와 기존 연구자들의 연구결과를 종합적으로 검토한 결과 볼트의 설계축력 도입을 위한 토크관리법은 타당하며, 시간경과 및 반복하중의 작용에 따른 축력감소율을 고려할 때 설계축력의 110%로 초기축력을 도입하도록 규정한 시방서 기준은 적합한 것으로 평가되었다. 시간경과에 따른 도입축력의 초기감소율은 경과시간의 상용로그에 비례하는 것으로 나타났으며, 도입직후 약 20시간이 경과하면 일정한 값으로 수렴되고 있음을 알 수 있었고 이들은 마찰면의 표면조도와는 상관관계가 없는 것으로 평가되었다. 미끄러짐계수는 연마면, 무기징크프라이머 도포면, 흑피면 순으로 크게 나타났으며 미끄러짐하중은 도입축력에 크게 좌우되나 도입축력이 크면 마찰면의 표면조도의 손상으로 인하여 미끄러짐계수가 작아져 도입축력과 미끄러짐하중 사이에는 선형적 비례관계가 성립되지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 마찰면의 압축력 분포를 조사한 결과 내측볼트 주변의 마찰면적이 외측볼트 주변보다 응력방향에 있어서 더 넓게 분포하고 있는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 이는 외측볼트로부터 마찰접합에서 지압접합으로 천이되고 있는 것으로 판단된다.

수치해석을 통한 용접구조물의 구조응력 추정에 관한 연구 (On the Numerical Procedure for Estimating Structural Stress of Welded Structures)

  • A numerical procedure is proposed as a mesh-size insensitive structural stress definition that gives a stress state at a weld toe with relatively large mesh size. The structural stress values obtained using different finite element types, i.e. shell element and solid element, are examined for typical weld structures. The calculation procedures are performed using the balanced nodal forces and moments obtained from finite element solutions. A consistent formulation based on work equivalent argument has been implemented to transform the balanced nodal forces and moments from shell to line force and line moments at each nodal position. The mesh-insensitivity, the effect of distance $\delta$(where the stress is calculated) and the potential limitations of the structural stress method are examined for various types of weldments. Based on the results from this study, it is expected to develop a more precise stress estimation technique for fatigue strength assessment of welded structures.

세라믹 촉매 담체의 내구 설계 기준에 대한 실험 및 수치해석의 비교 (Comparison of Experimental and Numerical Analysis for Durability Design Criteria in Ceramic Catalyst Substrate)

  • This study examines thermal safety on three-way catalyst that dominates 70 % among whole exhaust gas purification device in 2003. Three-way catalyst durability in the Korea requires 5 years/80,000 km in 1988 but require 10 years/120,000 km after 2002. Three-way catalyst durability in the USA requires 7 years/120,000 km but require 10 years/160,000 km after 2004. Three-way catalyst maintains high temperature in interior domain but maintains low temperature on outside surface. Therefore this device shows tensile stress on outside surface. Temperature distribution of three-way catalyst was acquired by thermal flow analysis for predicted thermal flow parameter. Thermal stress analysis for three-way catalysis was performed based on this temperature distribution. Thermal safety of three-way catalyst was estimated by power law dynamic fatigue life estimation and strength reduction methods for thermal stress.

An integrator based wind speed estimator for wind turbine control

  • In this paper, an integrator based method to estimate the effective wind speed in wind turbine systems is proposed. First, the aerodynamic torque was accurately estimated through a proportional gain based observer where the generator speed is the measured output of the system. The torque signal contains not only useful frequencies of the wind, but also high frequencies and the ones due to structural vibration. The useful information of the wind signal is low frequency. A spectral analysis permitted the determination of the useful frequencies. The high frequencies were then filtered before introducing the torque signal in the wind speed observer. The desired effective wind speed was extracted through an integrator based observer using the previously estimated aerodynamic torque. The strength of the method is to avoid numerical solutions used in literature of the wind speed estimation. The effectiveness of the proposed wind speed estimator and its use to control the generator speed has been tested under turbulent situations using the FAST software (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence), for large scale Megawatt turbine.

  • There has been recent demand for extending the life of age-degraded structures and equipment by such techniques as diagnosis, maintenance, safety assessment, and estimating residual life on iron-making plants and hydraulic, thermal, and nuclear power plants. These techniques take into account comprehensive scenarios that may cause malfunction and structural damage and allow an assessment of risk based on the likely scenarios. In particular the safety assessment and residual life estimation of age-degraded ships and equipment facilities require consideration of various factors such as mechanical and thermal stresses, corrosion, hardness, load variation due to changes of operating condition, crack generation and strength reduction of material by fatigue. In this study, a detail thermal stress analysis, one of useful techniques of safety assessment and maintenance, is performed on a blast furnace by using general FEM code (MSC/NASTRAN).

  • Bogie frame of the electric car is an important structural member for the support of vehicle leading. In general, more than 25 years' durability is necessary. A lot of study has been carried out for the prediction of the structural integrity of the bogie frame in experimental and theoretical domains. One of the useful methods is reliability-based approach. The objective of this paper is to estimate the structural integrity of the bogie frame of an electric car, which is under the running test. We used two approachs. In the first approach probabilistic distribution of S-N curve is used. In the second approach, limit state function is used.

증기발생기 전열관에 작용되는 정적 하중 평가 (Estimation of Static Load Applied on Steam Generator Tubes)

  • If a plugged tube in a steam generator is broken, it may damage nearby intact tubes. To prevent this damage, it is recommended that a stabilizer is installed into the plugged tube. However, the installation cost of a stabilizer is very high. So studies are required to determine the conditions on which the installation is necessary. For this purpose static loads and dynamic loads applied on a tube should be known to estimate the residual strength and remaining fatigue and wear life of a plugged tube. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses are performed to obtain the drag coefficient for cross flow to a tube. Using the obtained drag coefficient, the static load can be estimated and the residual strength of a plugged tube can be calculated. An inclined flow problem is also analyzed and the vertical and horizontal forces are obtained and discussed.

  • 무공해 에너지원은 화석에너지의 고갈과 환경오염의 심각한 문제로 인하여 절실히 요구되고 있는 실정이다. 그중 풍력발전 시스템은 타 에너지원에 비해 여러 가지 측면에서 유리한 점을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 500㎾급 풍력발전 시스템을 개발함에 있어, 적합한 공력성능 및 구조성능을 가지는 회전날개 설계과정을 수행하였다. 공력설계는 운용지역의 풍황을 고려하여 회전날개의 외형을 결정하였고 이를 바탕으로 공력성능해석이 수행되었으며, 구조설계는 복합재료를 사용하여 쉘-스파 구조를 갖도록 설계하여 굽힘 및 비틀림 그리고 피로수명에 대한 구조해석이 수행되었다. 그 결과 4m/s의 미풍에서도 운용가능하며, 12m/s에서는 정격출력 500㎾를 생산할 수 있는 형상이 설계되었고, 또한 20년 이상의 피로수명이 확보되었으며, 공진 등의 동적인 문제도 발생하지 않음을 확인하였다.

  • 최근 압력용기, 고압배관, LNG Tank 및 선체등의 구조물 파괴에 대한 안전성을 보증하기 위하여, 구조부재의 표면결함에 대한 균열성장 거동을 파악하는 것이 중요한 과제중에 하나라고 인식되어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 단일 및 복수표면 결함의 피로균열 성장을 바탕으로 표면에서 관통되기까지의 균열성장 수명의 추정등 실질적이고 일반적인 문제들을 해석할려고 시도하였다. 또한, 복수균열 문제에 적용하기 위하여 복수 언더컷의 합체진전현상을 검토하였으며 단일 언더컷과 복수 언더컷의 전파특성이 유사함을 밝혔다.
