Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the tendency toward depression and fatigue in early postpartum women and to determine the relationship between the symptoms of these conditions, according to the women's Sasang constitutions. Methods: In this study, 73 healthy postpartum women were analyzed according to Sasang constitution: 33 Taeeumin, 22 Soyangin, and 18 Soeumin. Symptoms of depression and fatigue were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale-K(EPDS-K) and the Fatigue Continuum Form(FCF), respectively, on the fourth(time 1), seventh(time 2), and fifteenth(time 3) days postpartum. Sasang constitutional types were determined by a medical specialist, using results from the Two Step Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Diagnosis(TS-QSCD). Results: 1. The overall depressive symptoms and fatigue scores decreased significantly over time in early postpartum women. 2. The mean scores for the EPDS and FCF were higher in the Soeumin group than in other groups. The scores for EPDS and FCF dropped sharply in comparison to a former level in the Soyangin group. And the mean EPDS score was lower in the Soyangin group than in other groups. The EPDS and FCF scores in the Taeeumin group changed slightly over time. However, these results were not statistically significant according to Sasang constitution. 3. The relationship between postpartum depression and fatigue showed a significant positive correlation. Conclusions: These results suggest that, in early postpartum women, depressive symptoms and fatigue differ according to Sasang constitution.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of stretching exercise on depression, pain, and fatigue in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE). Methods: The study was designed as a non-equivalent control group pre-posttest quasi-experimental design. The patients with SLE who signed the consent form were conveniently assigned into two groups(11 experimental subjects and 10 control subjects). The subjects in the experimental group were participated in 6 weeks stretching exercise program for one and a half hours per session twice a week. The data were analyzed by using a SAS-pc+ 8.01 program. Results: 'The experimental group would have less depression scores than the control group' was supported (Z=2.2, p=.025). 'The experimental group would have less pain scores than the control group' was supported (Z=3.4, p=.001). 'The experimental group would have less fatigue scores than the control group' was supported (Z=-2.0, p=.041). With this study, we identified the stretching exercise program was effective on depression, pain, and fatigue of SLE patients. Conclusions: From above results, 6 weeks stretching exercise program could be an effective nursing intervention to reduce depression, pain, and fatigue in patients with SLE.
Background: Work-related fatigue has a strong impact on performance and safety but so far, no agreed upon method exists to detect and quantify it. It has been suggested that work-related fatigue cannot be quantified with just one test alone, possibly because fatigue is not a uniform construct. The purpose of this study is therefore to measure work-related fatigue with multiple tests and then to determine the underlying factorial structure. Methods: Twenty-eight employees (mean: 36.11; standard deviation 13.17) participated in five common fatigue tests, namely, posturography, heart rate variability, distributed attention, simple reaction time, and subjective fatigue before and after work. To evaluate changes from morning to afternoon, t tests were conducted. For further data analysis, the differences between afternoon and morning scores for each outcome measure and participant (${\Delta}$ scores) were submitted to factor analysis with varimax rotation and each factor with the highest-loading outcome measure was selected. The ${\Delta}$ scores from tests with single and multiple outcome measures were submitted for a further factor analysis with varimax rotation. Results: The statistical analysis of the multiple tests determine a factorial structure with three factors: The first factor is best represented by center of pressure (COP) path length, COP confidence area, and simple reaction time. The second factor is associated with root mean square of successive difference and useful field of view (UFOV). The third factor is represented by the single ${\Delta}$ score of subjective fatigue. Conclusion: Work-related fatigue is a multidimensional phenomenon that should be assessed by multiple tests. Based on data structure and practicability, we recommend carrying out further studies to assess work-related fatigue with manual reaction time and UFOV Subtest 2.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of fatigue and functional status in patients with cancer. Method: The data were collected from August, 15 to October, 10, 2005. The subjects were recruited from three university hospitals and two general hospitals in B, U, and S cities in Korea. Fatigue was measured using the Fatigue Scale for Cancer Patients, and Functional Status was measured using the Karnofsky Performance Status Index. Result: 1) The mean score of fatigue was $79.72{\pm}21.25$(range: 26-130), and the mean score of functional status was $79.33{\pm}13.02$. 2) There were significant differences in the scores of fatigue by sex, age, marital status, employment, major care-giver, pain, and period after diagnosis. 3) There were significant differences in the scores of functional status by employment, major care-giver, pain, stage of cancer, period after diagnosis, and type of cancer. 4) There was a significant negative correlation between fatigue and functional status (r= -.472, p= .000). Conclusion: Increase in fatigue was associated with decrease in functional status in patients with cancer. Nurses must assess fatigue and functional status when caring for the cancer patients, and provide nursing intervention to relieve fatigue and to improve functional status.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between fatigue and nutritional status in gastric cancer Design. A correlational and crossectional study design was used. Method: Fatigue was measured using the Revised Piper Fatigue Scale. The parameters for nutritional status consisted of BMI, Hb, Hct, total protein, albumin and lymphocyte count. Result: The mean score of fatigue was $94.31{\pm}22.08(mean\;average\;4.48{\pm}1.00)$. The subdimensional scores of fatigue revealed $34.15{\pm}8.76$ for behavior/severity, $22.00{\pm}7.93$ for cognitive/mood, $21.67{\pm}5.56$ for sensory, and $20.81{\pm}6.69$ for affective. And the level of BMI, Hb, & Hct were under the normal ranges. In the ancillary analysis, there was a significant difference on the fatigue scores by the groups of present diet(F=3.343, P=.026). Age, types of treatments, period after diagnosis and weight change were related to nutritional status. There was a significant negative correlation between fatigue and nutritional status(r=-.371, P=.004). Conclusion: Considering the relationship between fatigue and nutritional status, nurses can identify the risk group most vulnerable to fatigue and malnourishment in order to provide appropriate interventions for them.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the level of pain and fatigue in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Method: The subjects for this study were 120 patients registered in S University Hospital, and the period of data collection was from June 20, 2005 to October 15, 2005. Results: The research instruments used in this study were the Graphic Rating Scale of Pain and Fatigue, and the cronbach's ${\alpha}$ of Fatigue scale was .90. In data analysis, SPSSWIN 12.0 program was used for descriptive statistics. The results were as follows. 1) The range of total pain scores was from 10 to 100 and the mean score of the pain in rheumatoid arthritis patients was 53.70. 2) The range of total fatigue scores was from 20 to 58 and the mean score of the fatigue in rheumatoid arthritis patients was 36.04. 3) There was a significant difference in pain according to duration of disease(F=3.934, p<.05). 4) There was a significant difference in fatigue according to duration of disease(F=3.442, p<.05). 5) The level of fatigue was significant correlation with the level of pain in rheumatoid arthritis patients(r=.217, p<.01). Conclusion: The level of fatigue was significant correlation with the level of pain in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Therefore nursing interventions decreasing the pain perceived by rheumatoid arthritis patients are needed to decrease there fatigue levels.
Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the antifatigue effect of SM-2000 on fatigued and stressed people. Methods : This study was carried out on 23 healthy people who have fatigue and stress. 11 people as the mentally-stressed group were examined by subjective symptoms of fatigue and blood cortisol test. They drank SM-2000 for seven days. SM-2000 was made up herbs which were used for fatigue. After that they were again examined by subjective symptoms of fatigue and blood cortisol test. 12 people as the physically-fatigued group were examined with fatigue biomarkers and exercise test. They also drank SM-2000 for seven days. After that they were again examined with fatigue biomarkers and exercise test. Results : Cortisol level, subjective symptoms of fatigue scores and physical, mental, and neuro-sensory symptoms of fatigue scores after drinking SM-2000 were not significantly increased compared with before drinking SM-2000 in the mental stressed group. SM-2000 significantly decreased lactate, glucose, and phosphorous levels, and running time after drinking SM-2000 was significantly suppressed compared with before drinking SM-2000 in the physically-fatigued group. Conclusions : On the basis of these results, SM-2000 had a clinical antifatigue effect in physically-fatigued people.
Purpose: Fatigue is a common problem in Parkinson's disease (PD), affecting 30~65% of patients with that diagnosis. Only recently has fatigue been recognized as an important clinical feature of PD. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of fatigue and related factors in patients with PD. Methods: Between March 1, and September, 30, 2010, a sample of 181 PD patients agreed to be interviewed. Results: The female patients' PFS (Parkinson Fatigue Scale) score was higher than those of the male patients. Household income and having a Job were significantly correlated with the PFS scores. Among the disease characteristics, motor fluctuations, dyskinesia and modified Hoehn and Yahr stage were significantly correlated with the PFS scores. On stepwise regression analysis, the most important factors related to the PFS scores were depression and sleep disturbance. Conclusion: Fatigue in patients with PD was associated with many factors and strongly associated with depression and sleep disturbance. Fatigue is a multidimensional construct; therefore, multidimensional strategies for relieving specific aspects of fatigue are needed.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a program to help emergency nurses overcome compassion fatigue, and to analyze the effects of the program. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. There were 14 participants in the experimental group and 18 subjects in the control group. The program was comprised of five, weekly 80-minute sessions including understanding and assessment of compassion fatigue, enhancing positive affect, balancing work-life, planning self care, training in relaxation techniques and cognitive restructuring, and getting social support. Research variables were ego-resiliency, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue of the ProQOL 5, and salivary cortisol. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, independent t-test, and paired t-test. Results: The first hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for ego resiliency between the experimental group and the control group". was not supported. The second hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for compassion satisfaction between the experimental group and the control group" was supported (t=2.15, p=.046). The third hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for compassion fatigue between the experimental group and the control group" was not supported. Conclusion: The first program for emergency nurses to overcome compassion fatigue in Korea was effective in increasing emergency nurses' compassion satisfaction and decreasing salivary cortisol level in the experimental group. Therefore, this program for overcoming compassion fatigue is useful to increase emergency nurses' compassion satisfaction. However replication studies of short-term intensive program reflecting emergency nurses' opinion are needed.
