The Effect of Defect Location Near a Circular Hole Notch on the Relationship Between Crack Growth Rate (da/dN) and Stress Intensity Factor Range (δK) - Comparative Studies of Fatigue Behavior in the Case of Monolithic Al Alloy vs. Al/GFRP Laminate - (원공노치 인근에 발생한 결함의 위치변화가 균열성장률(da/dN) 및 응력확대계수범위(δK)의 관계에 미치는 영향 - 단일재 알루미늄과 Al/GFRP 적층재의 피로거동 비교 -)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of arbitrarily located defect around the circular hole in the aircraft structural material such as Al/GFRP laminates and monolithic Al alloy sheet under cyclic bending moment. The fatigue behavior of these materials may be different due to the defect location. Material flaws in the from of pre-existing defects can severely affect the fatigue crack initiation and propagation behavior. The aim of this study is to evaluate effects of relative location of defects around the circular hole in monolithic Al alloy and Al/GFRP laminates under cyclic bending moment. The fatigue behavior i.e., the stress concentration factor($K_t$), the crack initiation life($N_i$), the relationship between crack length(a) and cycles(N), the relationship between crack growth rate(da/dN) and stress intensity factor range(${\Dalta}K$) near a circular hole are considered. Especially, the defects location at ${\theta}_1=0^{\circ}\;and\;{\theta}_2=30^{\circ}$ was strongly effective in stress concentration factor($K_t$) and crack initiation life($N_i$). The test results indicated the features of different fatigue crack propagation behavior and the different growing delamination shape according to each location of defect around the circular hole in Al/GFRP laminates.

  • The primary aim of this paper was to evaluate several probabilistic fatigue crack propagation models using the residual of a random variable, and to present the model fit for probabilistic fatigue behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys. The proposed probabilistic models are the probabilistic Paris-Erdogan model, probabilistic Walker model, probabilistic Forman model, and probabilistic modified Forman models. These models were prepared by applying a random variable to the empirical fatigue crack propagation models with these names. The best models for describing fatigue crack propagation behavior in Mg-Al-Zn alloys were generally the probabilistic Paris-Erdogan and probabilistic Walker models. The probabilistic Forman model was a good model only for a specimen with a thickness of 9.45 mm.

  • Fiber reinforced metal laminates(FRMLs) were new type of hybrid materials. FRMLs consist of high strength metals(Al 5052-H34) and laminated fiber with structural adhesive bond. The effect of resin mixture ratios on the fatigue crack propagation behavior and mechanical properties of aramid fiber reinforced aluminum composites was investigated. The epoxy, diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA), was cured with methylene dianiline(MDA) with or without an accelerator(K-54). Eight kinds of resin mixture ratio were used for the experiment ; five kinds of FRMLs(1)(mixture of epoxy and curing agent) and three kinds of FRMLs(2)mixture of epoxy, curing agent and accelerator). The characteristic of fatigue crack propagation behavior and mechanical properties FRMLs(2) shows more effecting than that of FRMLs(1).

  • In this study, fatigue crack behavior between arbitrarily located defects was investigated by experiment. Especially, stress interaction between micro hole defects and fatigue cracking, and fatigue crack initiation life following the variation of location of micro hole defects were considered. In addition, crack initiation position by micro hole stress interaction and the relationship between stress concentration factor and fatigue initiation life are studied in detail.

  • Fatigue crack behavior is studied through the two-level rotary bending test with the deep non-through radial holed notch specimens of low carbon steels(SM22C). The main factors investigated are the effects of the damage zone size around crack tip and phenomena of closing or opening of the crack tip. Obtained results are summarized as follows. Fatigue crack behavior in second level stressing slightly lower than fatigue limit is closely related to the size of damage zone produced by the first level stress higher than fatigue limit and to the phenomena of crack closing and opening for the second level stress. The non-propagating crack limit condition depends upon the crack length l$_{1}$ propagated under the first level stress and the magnitude of second level stress .sigma.$_{2}$ lower than the fatigue limit. The non-propagating crack limit condition is expressed by following eq. $\sigma_2^{6.1}{\times}l_{1}=7.35{\times}10^{6}[(kg_{f}mm^{6.1}(mm)]$

  • With respect to structural carbon steel(SM 22C), it was studied how the overstress or the understress has effects on fatigue inside crack propagation curve of a two level stress. Obtained results are summarized as follows. (1) The overstress or the understress, at a slip band occurrence stage, does not change the inside crack propagation curve because the crack closure and opening phenomena do not happen. (2) The overstress, at a crack propagation stage, does not change the inside crack propagation curve because the crack closure of overstress in compressive state is nearly same that of base stress in compressive state. (3) The understress, at a crack propagation stage, give rise to an acceleration of crack growth because the crack closure of understree in compressive state is more open than that of base stress in compressive state and the phenomenon is the essential increase of the actual applied stress of the specimen.

  • Recently with the rapid development in marine and shipbuilding industries such as marine structures, ships and chemical plants, it takes much interest in the study of corrosion fatigue characteristics that was close up an important role in mechanical design. In this study, characteristics of corner crack propagation on the base metal and heat affected zone of 5086 Al-Alloy was tested by using of a rotary bending fatigue tester and was investigated under the environments of specific resistance, $\rho$=25$\Omega$ cm and air. The corrosion fatigue crack initiation and corrosion fatigue life sensitivity were quantitatively inspected for 5086 Al-Alloy in the specific resistance, $\rho$=25$\Omega$ cm. Main results obtained are as follows: (1) The corrosion sensitivity of heat affected zone under specific resistance, $\rho$=25$\Omega$cm shows approximately 1.69~2.22 and corrosion sensitivity of base metal is more susceptible than that of heat affected zone. (2) The corrosion fatigue life sensitivity on heat affected zone decreases eminently than that of initial corrosion fatigue crack. (3) The characteristics of quarter elliptical corner crack propagation shows that depth crack is more grown than surface crack at crack initiation, but the surface crack is more propagated than depth crack as the crack propagation is increased. (4) The surface crack and depth crack growth on heat affected zone by softness show delayed phenomenon than that of base metal.

  • Fatigue crack propagation tests for the brake disc cast iron were conducted for investigating fatigue crack propagation rate(da/dN), crack propagation path and fracture toughness($K_c$) of the material. The threshold stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, was found to be about $6MPa{\sqrt{m}}$ at the stress ratio of R = 0.1. Also, fracture toughness value was determined to be $24.7MPa{\sqrt{m}}$. Irregular fatigue fracture surfaces were observed, indicating that fatigue crack growth occurred at the interface between randomly scattered flak graphite and ferrite, where the interfacial strength was relatively weak.

  • This study investigates the crack propagation behavior to examine the effect of welding residual stress by the superposition method. Especially, as the crack propagation behavior is affected by the applied stress and the stress ratio in compressive residual stress filed, it is studied for three cases as follows; (1) $K_{min}$is smaller than l $K_{r}$l, (2) $K_{min}$ is smaller than l $K_{r}$l in the later stage, (3) $K_{min}$is lager than l $K_{r}$l. The resuslts show that the superposition method is very useful in all the three cases of compressive residual stress field, but is inappropriate in predicting the crack propagation behavior in tensile residual stress field.field.field.
