  • The purpose of this study was to understand the process and investigate basic theory of fatigue experience of shift work nurses. The present study adopted grounded theory methodology on fatigue of shift work nurses. The participants for this study were 15 shift work nurses who were in the age of 25 to 35, the clinical experience of 2 to 14 years and the work department of ICU. ER. ward and delivery room. The data were collected from 2000 to 2003 by using interviews and observations. The contents of the interviews were tape-recorded and were drawn through repeated method. And then were analyzed into the concept, subcategories, and categories with the open coding process and axial coding was done to identify the relationships of the concepts and categories according to the paradigm models. The core category generated, which was a central phenomena of the exhaustion process. The causal condition is change events. The central condition of exhaustion were sorted as physical discomfort, decreasing vigor, psychological instability, feeling of sleeping desire, changing face impression and being heavy body. The intervening condition were discovered as social$\cdot$ psychology$\cdot$physical resist and positive$\cdot$negative interaction strategies. The consequences of the fatigue process is the short term exhaustion relief and long term residual exhaustion. The fatigue process of this study was 'break through exhaustion' of change event-exhaustion-resist-resolve intervention-adaptation. This study offers better understanding on fatigue process of shift work nurses and may facilitate more appropriate interventive strategies to support, information and knowledges according to fatigue process.

  • Tilling pad journal bearings have been widely used to support the rotors of the high rotating machinery such as steam and gas turbines owing to their inherent dynamic stability characteristics. However, serious bearing problems such as fatigue damage in the upper unloaded pad, the break of locking pins and the wear of pinholes etc. by pad fluttering are frequently taken place in the actual steam turbines. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mechanism of pad fluttering and to suggest the useful design guideline(application of preload, m) for the purpose of preventing bearing problems by pad fluttering in a tilting pad journal bearing. It is estimated that upper pad is easy to flutter because the film shape of the upper pad is diverged by moment acting on pivot point. This paper suggests that effective preload range(m $\geq$ 0.5) in order to be statically loaded pad under all operating conditions. Also, design modified bearing is suggested for the adjustment in actual steam turbines. And bearing and rotor dynamic analysis are performed to identify bearing characteristics and to verify the reliability of rotor-bearing system.

However, fatigue damages in the upper unloaded pads and the break of locking pins etc. by pad fluttering are continuously taken place in the actual steam turbines. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new bearing model that can prevent bearing problems effectively by pad fluttering in a tilting pad journal bearing. A new bearing model which has a wedged groove is suggested from the studies of fluttering mechanism performed by previously research works. The fluttering characteristics of the upper unloaded pad are studied experimentally in order to verify the reliability of a new bearing model. It can be known that the phenomenon of pad fluttering nearly does not occurred in the new bearing model under the various experimental conditions. And it is observed that any kinds of bearing failures by pad fluttering does not detect in the application of acture steam turbines.

  • All the failure in fatigue of torsion, bending and rolling contact, and in sliding wear begins mostly from surface. So much efforts have been invested to the surface technology which deal these problems during past decades, but the industrial demand keeps growing and more significant requirements are added to researchers and engineers. Nano crystal surface modification technology which makes the surface layers into nano crystalline, induces big and deep compressive residual stress, increases surface hardness, improves surface hardness, and make micro dimples structure on surface is an emerging technology which can break limits of current surface technology and relieve the burden of researchers and engineers. In this study, a nano crystal surface modification technology which is calling UNSM(Ultrasonic nano crystal surface modification) technology, is introduced and how it has been applied to industry to solve these failure problems is explained.

  • Stress intensity factor after penetration was discussed experimentally using long surface pre-cracked specimens of aluminum alloy 5083. The propagation behavior evaluation of long surface crack by equation proposed at penetration of short surface crack could be need modification to evaluate precisely because the error was high as aspect ratio is little. The modification of stress intensity factor with consideration of aspect ratio at penetration of long surface crack can be analyzed the behavior of crack penetration quantitatively.

  • Acoustic Emission(AE) signals obtained during fracture toughness test and fatigue test for nuclear pressure vessel material(SA 508 cl.3) and artificial AE signals from pencil break and ultrasonic pulser were classified using pattern recognition methods. Three different classifiers ; namely Minimum Distance Classifier, Linear Discriminant Classifier and Maximum Likelihood Classifier were used for pattern recognition. In this study, the performance of each classifier was compared. The discrimination of AE signals from cracking and crack surface rubbing was possible and the analysis for crack propagation was applicable by pattern recognition methods.

  • In this study, an application of crack morphology variables in the Leak-Before-Break(LBB) evaluation for nuclear piping systems is investigated, including influences on the leakage crack size and crack instability loads. The crack surface roughness and the number of flow turns as a function of the crack opening displacement are applied to LBB evaluations for KSNP pressurizer surge line, for which fatigue and stress corrosion cracking are considered as failure mechanisms. As a result, there would be a significant impact on safety margins to acceptance criteria for the surge line if crack morphology variables are applied additionally to the current regulatory guide without re-analyses for justification of safety factors being applied on the leakage crack size and piping loads for evaluations.

  • Recently, the research and development of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFRs) have made progresses. However, liquid sodium, the coolant of an SFR, is chemically unstable and sodium fire can be occurred when liquid sodium leaks from sodium pipe. To reduce the damage by the sodium fire, many fire walls and fire extinguishers are needed for SFRs. LBB concept in SFR might reduce the scale of sodium fire and decrease or eliminate fire walls and fire extinguishers. Therefore, LBB concept can contribute to improve economic efficiency and to strengthen defense-in depth safety. The LBB assessment procedure has been well established, and has been used significantly in light water reactors (LWRs). However, an LBB assessment of an SFR is more complicated because SFRs are operated in elevated temperature regions. In such a region, because creep damage may occur in a material, thereby growing defects, an LBB assessment of an SFR should consider elevated temperature effects. The procedure and method for this purpose are provided in RCC-MRx A16, which is a French code. In this study, LBB assessment was performed for PGSFR IHTS hot-leg pipe according to RCC-MRx A16 and the applicability of the code was discussed.
