  • This paper proposes a simplified elastic-plastic analysis procedure using the penalty factors presented in the Code Case N-779 for strain-based fatigue assessment of nuclear safety class 1 components under severe seismic loads such as safety shutdown earthquake and beyond design-basis earthquake. First, a simplified elastic-plastic analysis procedure for strain-based fatigue assessment of nuclear safety class 1 components under the severe seismic loads was proposed based on the analysis result for the simplified elastic-plastic analysis procedure in the Code Case N-779 and the stress categories corresponding to normal operation and seismic loads. Second, total strain amplitude was calculated directly by performing finite element cyclic elastic-plastic seismic analysis for a hot leg nozzle in pressurizer surge line subject to combined loading including deadweight, pressure, seismic inertia load, and seismic anchor motion, as well as was derived indirectly by applying the proposed analysis procedure to the finite element elastic stress analysis result for each load. Third, strain-based fatigue assessment was implemented by applying the strain-based fatigue acceptance criteria in the ASME B&PV Code, Sec. III, Subsec. NB, Article NB-3200 and by using the total strain amplitude values calculated. Last, the total strain amplitude and the fatigue assessment result corresponding to the simplified elastic-plastic analysis were compared with those using the finite element elastic-plastic seismic analysis results. As a result of the comparison, it was identified that the proposed analysis procedure can derive reasonable and conservative results.

  • An integrated fatigue strength assessment system was computerized. The system developed consists of 9 modules: user interface, cycle counting, load history construction, data searching, fatigue properties estimation, fatigue data analysis, true stress and strain analysis, expert system for crack initiation life prediction, fatigue crack initiation and propagation life prediction. Fatigue strength database also was included in this system. The fatigue expert system helps a beginner to predict a fatigue crack initiation life in fatigue strength assessment. The expert system module in this system is developed on the personal computer by using C language and UNiK, an expert system developing tool. To evaluate the system, the results of test under variable loading of SAE and failure data from a field were analyzed. The evaluation show that the system provided fatigue life prediction within 3-scatter band and gave reasonable predictions. To get more accurate predictions of fatigue life without fatigue properties, we recommend utilizing the system along with the fatigue strength database.

  • Fatigue strength assessment procedures have been implemented in the ship design rules by many classification societies. However, a large variation tin the details of the different approaches exists in practically all aspects influding load history assessment, stress evaluation and fatigue strength assessment. In order to assess the influences of thesd variations on the prediction of fatigue lives. a comparative study is organized by the ISSC Committee III.2 Fatigue and Fracture. A pad detail on the top of longitudinal hatch coaming of a panamax container vessel is selected for fatigue calculation. The work described in this paper is one set of results of this comparative study in which the ABS dynamics approach is applied. Through this analysis the following conclusions can be drawn. (1) With the original ABS approach, the fatigue life of this pad detail is very low, only 2.398 years. (2) The treatment of the stillwater bending moment in the ABS approach might be a source of conservatism. If the influence of stillwater bending moment is ignored, then the fatigue life for this pad detail is 7.036 years. (3) The difference between the nominal stress approach and the hot spot stress approach for this pad detail is about 26%.

  • This paper presents a fatigue assessment model that was developed for corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using prestressed carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The proposed model considers the fatigue properties of the constituent materials as well as the section equilibrium. The model provides a rational approach that can be used to explicitly assess the failure mode, fatigue life, fatigue strength, stiffness, and post-fatigue ultimate capacity of corroded beams strengthened with prestressed CFRP. A parametric analysis demonstrated that the controlling factor for the fatigue behavior of the beams is the fatigue behavior of the corroded steel bars. Strengthening with one layer of non-prestressed CFRP sheets restored the fatigue behavior of beams with rebar at a low corrosion degree to the level of the uncorroded beams, while strengthening with 20- and 30%-prestressed CFRP sheets restored the fatigue behavior of the beams with medium and high corrosion degrees, respectively, to the values of the uncorroded beams. Under cyclic fatigue loading, the factors for the strengthening design of corroded RC beams fall in the order of stiffness, fatigue life, fatigue strength, and ultimate capacity.

  • Background: This study was planned in an attempt to develop scales for the assessment of fatigue in pediatric oncology patients aged 7-12 as well as for their parents. Materials and Methods: In collecting the study data, we used the Child and Parent Information Form, Visual Fatigue Scale, Scale for the Assessment of Fatigue in Pediatric Oncology Patients Aged 7-12 and the Scale for the Assessment of Fatigue in Pediatric Oncology Patients Aged 7-12 for Parents. We also used Pearson correlation analysis, the Cronbach Alpha coefficient, Factor Analysis and ROC Analysis for the study data. Results: In this study, the total Cronbach alpha value of the parent form was 0.95, the total factor load was 0.52-0.95 and the total variance being explained was 85.7%. The cutoff point of the parent form was 82 points. The total Cronbach alpha value of the child form was 0.98, the total factor load was 0.71-0.94 and the total variance being explained was 84.7%. The cutoff point of the child form was 75 points. Conclusions: This study suggests that our scales for the assessment of fatigue in pediatric oncology patients aged 7-12 and their parents are valid and reliable instruments.

  • This paper is related to structural assessment considering the hydroelastic response of ultra large container ships, especially from whipping (bow or stern impacts) and from springing (resonance). In general, whipping contributes both to increased fatigue and extreme loading, while springing does mainly contribute to increased fatigue loading. To evaluate the hydroelastic response quantitatively with high accuracy, numerical code considering hydro-structure coupling was applied and fatigue strength of a 13,100 TEU class containership was verified. The segmented model test and full scale measurement were also needed to assess the effect of whipping and springing on the fatigue and extreme capacity in more realistic way and for verification of the numerical tools. With reference to class rule, fatigue assessment considering springing effect and extreme assessment considering whipping effect were introduced.

  • The assessment of fatigue property is one of the most indispensable factors to design mechanical structures or parts. For accurately assessing fatigue property, it is necessary to precisely identify the loading condition and material property of the objective structure. However, there are many kind of problems in conducting predictive activity for a design concerned with variable factor such as fatigue phenomenons and environments. Therefore, most of the fatigue problems have been assessed from exiting experiment data and prediction method. In this study, expert system is developed for simply conducting performance assessment of weldments based on Finite element Analysis carrying out performance improvement and safety assessment of welded structures.

  • This study introduces a fatigue assessment procedure using mesh-insensitive structural stress method based on the Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers by considering important factors, such as mean stress and thickness effects. The fatigue assessment result of mesh-insensitive structural stress method have been compared with CSR procedure based on equivalent notch stress at major hot spot points in the area near the ballast hold for a 180 K bulk carrier. The possibility of implementing mesh-insensitive structural stress method in the fatigue assessment procedure for ship structures is discussed.

  • For the rational design of welded joint, it is needed to assess repeatedly the fatigue life of the joint with various dimensions and welding conditions. In this paper, an automation of repeated process of fatigue life assessment for welded cruciform joint was studied. The process is related to stress analysis in vicinity of weld-toe and fatigue life assessment based on analyzed stress distribution. With the change of design condition including dimensions and/or welding heat input, the above two works have to be performed. Using the commercial tool for system integration, ModelCenter, an automation of the repeated process for welded cruciform joint based on 2D modeling was achieved. In this automation system, data exchanges between programs regardless of commercial or in-house one work well, and parametric studies for optimal design can be performed.
