FRONTAL IMPACT FINITE ELEMENT MODELING TO DEVELOP FRP ENERGY ABSORBING POLE STRUCTURE

  • The aim of this paper is to contribute to the efficient design of traffic light poles involved in vehicle frontal collisions by developing a computer-based, finite-element model capable of capturing the impact characteristics. This is achieved by using the available non-linear dynamic analysis software "LS-DYNA3D", which can accurately predict the dynamic response of both the vehicle and the traffic light pole. The fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) as a new pole's material is proposed in this paper to increase energy absorption capabilities in the case of a traffic pole involved in a vehicle head-on collision. Numerical analyses are conducted to evaluate the effects of key parameters on the response of the pole embedded in soil when impacted by vehicles, including: soil type(clay and sand) and pole material type(FRP and steel). It is demonstrated from the numerical analysis that the FRP pole-soil system has favorable advantages over steel poles, where the FRP pole absorbed vehicle impact energy in a smoother behavior, which leads to smoother acceleration pulse and less deformation of the vehicle than those encountered with steel poles. Also, it was observed that clayey soil brings a slightly more resistance than sandy soil which helps reducing pole movement at ground level. Finally, FRP pole system provides more energy absorbing leading to protection during minor impacts and under service loading, and remain flexible enough to avoid influencing vehicle occupants, thus reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from the crash.

  • Computational cost is one of the major obstacles for detailed risk analysis of structures. This paper puts forward a methodology for efficient probabilistic seismic loss assessment of structures using the Endurance Time (ET) analysis and the first-order reliability method (FORM). The ET analysis efficiently yields the structural responses for a continuous range of intensities through a single response-history analysis. Taking advantage of this property of ET, FORM is employed to estimate the annual rate of exceedance for the loss components. The proposed approach is an amalgamation of two analysis approaches, ET and FORM, that significantly lower the computational costs. This makes it possible to evaluate the seismic risk of complex systems. The probability distribution of losses due to the structural and non-structural damage as well as injuries and fatalities of a prototype structure are estimated using the proposed methodology. This methodology is an alternative to the prevalent risk analysis framework of the total probability theorem. Hence, the risk estimates of the proposed approach are compared with those from the total probability theorem as a benchmark. The results indicate a satisfactory agreement between the two methods while a significantly lower computational demand for the proposed approach.

지게차 사망재해의 인적오류에 대한 대안 (Alternative Prevention on Human Error of Fatal Injuries by the Folk Lifts)

  • According to the statistics, occupational fatal injuries by the fork lifts were about 30 per year in whole industrial. Fork lifts are widely used in various parts of industries to improve the efficiency of the work. In this study, the current regulations to be adequate in industrial site have to be renew in order to prevent the fatal injuries by the fork lifts. Fatal injury analysis were conducted with several accident cases by the fork lifts. For each accident, the causes of the injuries were examined and proper safety measures were proposed. In this study, the fork lift showed a high fatality rate in industrial accidents and no detailed cause analysis of fatal accidents was conducted in terms of unsafe acts or conditions. First, fork lifts were the highest of the machines caused the accidents. In order to prevent fatal injuries by the fork lifts, the tarket was manufacturing industry. Second, the order of the cause of cognitive engineering agenda in the manufacture industrial was visibility, responsibility and affordance, and revision of acts was proposed. Third, there was not a lots of different points of human error between occurrence types and business sizes. Forth, number of fatalities by the attacker was more than by the inducer.

Effects of Job Satisfaction, Organizational Support and Risk Perception on Safety Consciousness in Confined Space Workers

  • Objective: This study aims to investigate the effects of organizational support, risk perception and job satisfaction on safety consciousness in confined space works. Background: Confined space works are rated as hazardous works with high injury frequency and fatalities. But there were few researches for the occupational injury of the confined space workers. Method: Questionnaire survey targeting 236 workers working in confined spaces were carried out to construct the structural equation model on safety consciousness. The participants were all male workers, and they install and maintain or clean facilities mainly in the confined spaces. Results: A structural equation model for safety consciousness was proposed, and validated based on perceived organizational support, risk perception and job satisfaction factors. Perceived 'organizational support' contributed significantly to 'worker's safety consciousness' both directly and indirectly. Also, perceived 'worker's safety consciousness' was also affected by perceived 'job satisfaction' and 'risk perception'. In terms of magnitude of relationships, the direct effect of perceived 'job satisfaction' on 'worker's safety consciousness' was the greatest among the interrelationships among latent factors. Conclusion: Workers' safety consciousness can function as a leading indicator for safety and hazard prevention of workers. Application: The results can be used in developing safety prevention programs for confined space workers.

  • As technologies are developed and systems are complicated, hazards embedded in the system are also increasing. proving safety and managing the safetyis more scientific and organizational domain so that safety management system is pursuing to be activeformation detecting the factors of hazard and managing them beyond passiveway. In the future, in order to establish and manage national safety management system, it is important to have effective system and manage it and also more important that all the people related to target system has to change their recognition and to playroles in it. Many railway safety measures reduce railway fatalities into half for last 10 years. But more improvement in railway safety is required to meet the social need after railway fire accident in Daegue. After the Daegue subway train fire accident, the Korean government has been trying to prepare a nation-wide railway safety program, a safety organization, and a Safety Act. To construct a nation-wide railway safety management program, system architecture was established.

칼슘통로차단제 중독의 치료 (Treatments of Calcium Channel Blocker Overdose)

  • Pharmaceutical agents are the most common causes of poisoning in Korea. Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are commonly used in Korea for the management of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases, but are associated with a risk of mortality due to overdose. Due to the frequent fatalities associated with CCB overdose, it is essential that the emergency physician is capable of identifying CCB intoxication, and has the knowledge to manage CCB overdose. This article reviews the existing clinical guidelines, retrospective studies, and systematic reviews on the emergency management of CCB overdose. The following are the varied treatments of CCB overdose currently administered. 1) For asymptomatic patients: observation with enough time and decontamination, if indicated. 2) For symptomatic patients: infusion of calcium salt, high dose insulin therapy, and vasopressor (norepinephrine) or atropine for bradycardia. 3) For patients refractory to the first line therapy or with refractory shock or impending arrest: lipid emulsion therapy and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. 4) As adjunct therapy: phosphodiesterase inhibitors, glucagon, methylene blue, pacemaker for AV block. Small CCB ingestion is known to be fatal for pediatric patients. Hence, close observation for sufficient time is required.

Design and implementation of a GIS-based accident management system using tracking technique

  • This paper addresses a GIS (Geographic Information System) based system in order to reduce the rate of public transportation accidents occurring in Iranian roads network. Over the years, the road accidents are a major issue throughout the world. Today, particular consideration is given to those technologies which can lead to diminish on the number of critical incidents. One of the main factors resulting in accidents and fatalities rates growth is the speed violation of buses in Iranian road network. The conventional speed controlling approach in Iran based on the Tachograph which records vehicle's speed, time, and stoppage in the mechanical processing has many problems. Hence, this research is intended to design and implement a GIS-based system to manage road accident of Bus transportation system using offline tracking system. This was accomplished using a GIS-based technique that encompasses three steps. The first step is developing a GIS-based accident system. The second step includes designing and applying a tracking system inside 90 buses for recording Bus information for speed controlling. Lastly, by using mentioned system in police center, the illegal drivers' punishment would be considered properly. Overall, this system has been successfully applied in this work. Therefore, the police and transportation office are able to control and make policy to diminish the number of accident. It is anticipated that online tracking system through the Web GIS would be utilized In this system in the near future.

  • 2005년 건설기계의 등록대수가 32만대를 넘어서고 있다. 건설은 점차적으로 가계화되면서 인력감축, 생산성 및 품질의 향상을 가져왔다. 그리나 건설기계라는 관점에서 건설기계의 효과적인 작업 및 관리, 가동성 향상과 사회간접자본 시설물의 안전향상, 그리고 민원감소를 위하여 해결해야 할 문제들이 있다. 현재 건설업을 위한 정보통신기술의 실현성이 가속화되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 주어진 문제를 해결하기 위하여 정보통신기술을 적용한 건설기계 관리시스템을 제안하고자 한다. 건설기계 관리시스템의 개발은 더 낳은 건설기계의 작업과 관리가 가능할 것으로 사료된다.

교통단속카메라 전·후방을 고려한 사고 저감효과 분석 -울산시 북구를 대상으로- (Analysis of Traffic Accident Reduction Effects considering Monitoring Direction of Traffic Camera)

  • PURPOSES : Traffic cameras have been installed to reduce traffic accidents. The effectiveness of traffic cameras has been proved by dozens of studies, but recently questions over its effectiveness have been raised by a series of studies. In this study, the effectiveness of traffic cameras was analyzed with a focus on different road environments. METHODS : The effectiveness of the traffic cameras was analyzed by extracting the occurence frequency before and after camera installation. The effect of reduction was analyzed comprehensively considering the installation position, monitoring direction, and surrounding environment of traffic cameras. RESULTS : The result of this study is as follows. First, the installation of cameras in an area with relatively low accidental traffic was more effective. Secondly, the effect of camera installation on car-to-pedestrian collisions was better than that of car-to-car collisions. Thirdly, accidents tended to occur more frequently when cameras were installed in front of the accident-prone owing to the negative spill-over effect. CONCLUSIONS : The result can be used to guide placement of traffic cameras. Moreover, the installation of cameras with consideration of the road environment is expected to contribute to a reduction in traffic fatalities.

전복 안정성을 고려한 SUV 현가장치 파라미터의 최적설계 (Optimum Design of SUV Suspension Parameters Considering Rollover Stability)

  • In recent years, the rollover accident of large class of vehicles has become important safety issue. Even though the rollover form a small percentage of all traffic accidents, they have a fatal effect upon the driver and passenger. Among the traffic accidents occurred in driving, the rollover is the major cause of traffic fatalities. Therefore, it is required to develop the analytical and experimental techniques for predicting rollover propensity of vehicles and also to improve the vehicle suspension design in the viewpoint of rollover resistance. In this study, the parameter sensitivities for the roll angle of SUV suspension are analyzed, and then the determined design parameters are optimized by using the regression model function of the response surface methods. The analysis results show that the roll angle of the optimized vehicle is decreased as compared with the initial vehicle and also the rollover possibility is decreased when the roll rate of the front suspension is larger than the roll rate of the rear suspension.
