Methods : This study was carried out on 11 patients who carried out modified fasting therapy using fermented herbal medicine. They went through reducing food intakes period(7 days), fasting period(10~14 days) and refeeding period(10~14 days). Body compositions(weight, BMI(body mass index), skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, percent body fat, basal metabolic rate, waist-hip ratio, visceral fat area) were measured at each state. And then the data was analyzed. Results : 1. The weight and BMI decreased during the reducing food intakes period and the fasting period, and increased during the refeeding period. But the weight and BMI decreased during the fasting therapy period, as a whole. 2. The skeletal muscle mass decreased during the fasting period and increased during the refeeding period. As the final outcome, for the whole fasting therapy period, decrease of skeletal muscle mass didn't show significance. The body fat mass and percent body fat decreased during the reducing food intakes period, the fasting period and the refeeding period. 3. The basal metabolic rate decreased during the fasting period and increased during the refeeding period. As the final outcome, for the whole fasting therapy period, decrease of basal metabolic rate didn't show significance. 4. The waist-hip ratio decreased during the fasting period and the refeeding period. The visceral fat area decreased during the fasting period and refeeding period. Conclusions : Results from this investigation showed that modified fasting therapy using fermented herbal medicine have positive effects on changes of body compositions. This results are expected to compensate the defects of existing fasting therapy.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of modified fasting therapy on body composition, blood cell count and blood chemistry in inpatients. Methods : The modified fasting therapy program consists of three phases, a period of reducing food intakes, fasting and refeeding. Body weight, body composition, and the degree of obesity were estimated in before fasting therapy and after refeeding. Blood cell count and blood chemistry were estimated in before fasting therapy, before refeeding and after refeeding. Results : After modified fasting therapy, body weight, body fat mass, percent body fat, body mass index(BMI), body matabolic rate(BMR) and muscle mass was decreased significantly. WBC count and platelet count decreased significantly, RBC count and hemoglobin increased significantly and hematocrit was not changed significantly but within normal limit. AST and ALT increased significantly, especially patients group over BMI 25 within normal liver function. This study was not founded correlation between decreased muscle mass and increased liver function test. ALP, BUN, Total-cholesterol, and triglyceride decreased significantly. Creatinine increased significantly, but within normal limit. Sodium was not changed significantly, potassium decreased significantly but within normal limit. Conclusions : These results suggest that modified fasting therapy will be beneficial if several measures complement.

  • A highly obese female patient (body mass index=$30.8kg/m^2$) participated in a 10-day Gamrosu modified fasting therapy with soluble dietary fiber supplementation to enhance lipid metabolism. Gamrosu is a modified fasting therapy beverage which is made from medical herbs and carbohydrates (431 kcal/d). Before and after fasting, we evaluated the efficacy of therapy by measuring the changes of body composition and blood chemistry. After the modified fasting therapy, -6.1% of body weight and -5.6% of body fat mass were decreased. With regard to blood chemistry, all the plasma lipid levels were lowered. -37.4% of total cholesterol, -39.7% of low density lipoprotein cholesterol, -39.0% of triglyceride and -27% of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol were reduced. Further studies are needed to alleviate the reduction of HDL-cholesterol to apply the Gamrosu modified fasting to hyperlipidemia.

  • 1. Objectives The purpose of this study was to give an account of the effects of Sasang constitutional medicine and fasting therapy for the patient who has suffered from various signs or symptoms caused by psoriasis. 2. Methods The cases were one 50-year old man diagnosed as Taeeumin and one 29-year old man diagnosed as Soyangin. They all have the symptoms caused by psoriasis, such as rash, erythema, scaly skin, itching, etc. So we've recorded the progress of their symptoms as a score at the tables to check their conditions throughout the hospitalized period. We've diagnosed them as Soyangin, Taeeumin have prescribed Yangdokbaecho-tang and Galgeunhaegi-tang and have carried out fasting therapy. 3. Results and Conclusions The general condition of the patient have improved incredibly, where the each scores at the tables dropped from 4 to 0,1 and their symptoms like rash, erythema, scaly skin, itching, edema have almost disappeared at the end of the hospitalization period. This indicates that Yangdokbaecho-tang and Galgeunhaegi-tang can be used to treat main symptoms of psoriasis and fasting therapy can be used as a subsidiary therapy for the psoriasis.
