  • This paper presents active control of aperture type near-field storage head. In order to achieve fast and accurate control, dual servo control algorithm is applied. Based on the big difference in time constant, we seperate two actuator and control independently. With the combination of fine and coarse actuator, gap is controlled within 100nm until the disk rotates upto 10 rpm speed. From the experimental results, the feasibility and performance of active gap control is proved.

  • Solid State Disks(SSD) are one of the best candidates to support next storage technology in desktop and server computing environment. The features of non-volatility, low power consumption, and fast access time for read operations are sufficient grounds to support SSD as major components of future storages. This paper describes a technical trend of HDD based RAID technology and proposes a new RAID system for SSD.

  • Recently increasing application of flash memory in mobile and ubiquitous related devices is due to its non-volatility, fast response time, shock resistance and low power consumption. Following this trend, SSD(Solid State Disk) using multiple flash chips, instead of hard-drive based storage system, started to widely used for its advantageous features. However, flash memory based storage subsystem should resolve the performance bottleneck for writing in perspective of speed and lifetime according to its disadvantageous physical property. In order to provide tangible performance, solutions are studied in aspect of reclaiming of invalid regions by decreasing the number of erasures and distributing the erasures uniformly over the whole memory space as much as possible. In this paper, we study flash memory recycling algorithms with multiple management units and demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides feasible performance. The proposed method utilizes the partitions of the memory space by utilizing threshold values and reconfigures the management units if necessary. The performance of the proposed policies is evaluated through a number of simulation based experiments.

  • Maximizing energy efficiency minimizes the energy consumption of computation, storage and communications required for IT services, resulting in economic and environmental benefits. Recent advancement of flash and next generation non-volatile memory technology and price decrease of those memories have led to the rise of so-called AFA (All-Flash Array) storage devices made of flash or next generation non-volatile memory. Currently, the AFA devices are rapidly replacing traditional storages in the high-performance servers due to their fast input/output characteristics. However, it is not well known how effective the energy efficiency of the AFA devices in the real world. This paper shows input/output performance and power consumption of the AFA devices measured on the Linux XFS file system via experiments and discusses energy efficiency of the AFA devices in the real world.

  • We have developed an embedded based environment sensing module with high-resolution temperature, humidity and gas sensors to detect gas leakage under the condition of LNG injection. The developed sensing module have linearity with gas concentration. We have confirmed the developed sensing module could detect LNG gas concentration of 5 cmol/mol and 15 cmol/mol, which are gas concentration at risk of explosion. The response time of the developed module was fast within 8 seconds. Therefore it can be used to detect LNG gas leakage.

  • In 4th-generation storage rings, whether to operate the beam as round or flat is a critical question. A round beam has equal horizontal and vertical emittances, and is an efficient solution to reduce strong intra-beam scattering effects and lengthen the Touschek lifetimes, but a flat beam produces a brighter photon beam than a round beam. To provide both beams concurrently rather than bifurcating the beam time, this paper presents the exploitation of beam dynamics and the cutting-edge fast pulser that supports concurrent operation of round beam and flat beam.

Quality Characteristics of Small Package Kimchi according to Packing Material and Storage Temperature (포장재와 저장온도에 따른 소포장 김치의 품질특성)

  • Cabbage (Baechu) Kimchi in its truncated form was placed in four different packing materials, Ny/PE/LLDP, OPP/AL/PE, PP and PET, and quality changes were observed during storage. Changes in pH and total acidity showed an x-shaped cross-curve as pH decreased and total acidity increased during storage. PP tray showed the slowest change at $5^{\circ}C$ with time. The pH was initially 6.25, but decreased to 4.12~4.16 at 20 days, and total acidity showed a 4 to 4.8-fold increase after 20 days of storage compared to the initial value. During storage at $5^{\circ}C$, total bacterial count and lactic acid bacterial count rapidly increased after 4 days. The total bacterial quantity decreased after a period of time and there were differences according to packaging material; OPP/AL/PE packaging showed the most dramatic decrease. Change in microbial count mostly followed a similar pattern to that of total acidity for all packaging materials. Changes in the color of Kimchi liquid, when examined by color index in $L{\cdot}b$/a form, rapidly decreased over time, similar to pH. Small Ny/PE/PP and OPP/AL/PE packages of Kimchi were examined for changes in free volume inside the packaging. After 13 days of storage at $5^{\circ}C$, the volume was 243 mL, but storage at $20^{\circ}C$ resulted in a volume of 372 mL, a more than 1.5-fold increase in free volume. There were changes in the quality characteristics of small package Kimchi according to storage temperature and packaging material, and large changes in pH, total acidity, and microbial count were evident upon storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 8 days, which was the optimum palatability period. Mostly, PP treatment showed the slowest quality changes upon storage at $5^{\circ}C$. However, due to small package Kimchi's fast consumption system, the appropriate choice of packaging material must consider the product's turnover ratio. Further, the varieties of small package Kimchi should be diversified according to different consumer preferences by offering Kimchi with different maturity levels. Further, since the leading consumer base ranges in age from the teens to thirties, the development of various products targeting such consumers is necessary.

Effect of Thawing Methods and Storage Time on Physicochemical Characteristic and Fatty Acid and Amino Acid Content of Frozen Duck Meat

  • This study investigated the effects of thawing methods and storage time on the quality of frozen duck meat. Meat was obtained from eight-week-old Korean native ducks (average weight=2.8 kg). Seventy-two samples were divided into eight treatments (three replicates/treatment, three samples/replicate) with 2 × 4 factorial arrangement based on two thawing methods (under running water at 12℃ for 3 h and in a refrigerator at 5℃ for 24 h) and four storage times (1, 3, 6, and 12 months). CIE b* was significantly different among different storage time treatments, reaching its lowest after 6 months (P<0.05). Cooking loss did not differ between storage times; however, it was significantly lower following application of the fast thawing treatment (P<0.05). Water-holding capacity of meat stored for one month was highest compared to that of meat stored for a longer period (P<0.05). Additionally, there were significant differences based on storage time in γ-linoleic acid (C18:3n6) and eicosenoic acid (C20:1n9) contents (P<0.01), as well as in protein contents (P<0.05). Palmitoleic acid (C16:1n7) typically decreased after three months of storage; however, this decline was not significant compared to other storage times. Essential amino acids contents, except methionine, were significantly difference at six and 12 months of storage (P<0.05). Similarly, non-essential amino acid contents, except tyrosine, were significantly different among storage periods (P<0.05, P<0.01). Alternatively, there were no significant differences in the chemical composition, fatty acid content, or amino acid content based on the thawing method.

  • As network resources have become faster and demands for multimedia service through network have increased, the demand for Media server system has increased. These kinds of media server solve their bottle neck problem of internal storage device by using parallel system which takes advantage of fast network resource. Many vendors have suggested each of their media server system to solve these problem radically, but most of them require major modification of infra component and additional drawback has added. For example, storage mechanism for specific media requires new file system which is totally different from traditional one, and algorithm for enhancing performance may not suit for traditional operating system environment. In this paper, we designed a parallel media server based on web interface of traditional system and implemented a program for media server. Implemented server system performs parallel processing through web interface without any modification of traditional system, and controls which is related to merging load by distributed data is charged only to client and control server and consequently load of storage server can be minimized. And also, data transfer protocol for streaming media includes Retransfer algorithm and client Admission control policy relevant to performance of whole system.

  • The optical storage device has recently experienced significant improvements, especially for the aspects of high capacity and fast transfer rate. However, it is the fact that the optical storage device has the lower access time for the randomly scattered data compared to the hard disk drives. It is, therefore, necessary to develop a new type of optical storage system. In this study, we investigate the air bearing characteristics for the optical disk drives which have the swing arm actuator similar to the hard disk drives. Considering the requirements of the optical disk drives, we parameterize the shape of the air bearing surface and investigate its sensitivity to the flying characteristics for further optimized design outputs.
