Stereoscopic images consist of the left image and the right image. Thus, stereoscopic images have much amounts of data than single image. Then an efficient image compression technique is needed, the DPCM-based predicted coding compression technique is used in most video coding standards. Motion and disparity estimation are needed to realize the predicted coding compression technique. Their performing algorithm is block matching algorithm used in most video coding standards. Full search algorithm is a base algorithm of block matching algorithm which finds an optimal block to compare the base block with every other block in the search area. This algorithm presents the best efficiency for finding optimal blocks, but it has very large computational loads. In this paper, we have proposed fast disparity estimation algorithm using motion and disparity vector information of the prior frame in stereo image coding. We can realize fast disparity vector estimation in order to reduce search area by taking advantage of global disparity vector and to decrease computational loads by limiting search points using motion vectors and disparity vectors of prior frame. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance in the simple image sequence than complex image sequence. We conclude that the fast disparity vector estimation is possible in simple image sequences by reducing computational complexities.

This paper presents a 3-D visualization technique using stereo radioactive images to provide efficient inspection of fast moving cargo objects. The proposed technique can be used for such objects which CT or MRI cannot inspect due to restricted scan environment. Stereo radioactive images are acquired from a specially designed equipment which consists of a X-ray source, linear radioactive sensors, and a moving stage. Two radioactive sensors are installed so that rectified stereo X-ray images of objects are acquired. Using the stereo X-ray images, we run a matching algorithm to find the correspondences between the images and reconstruct 3-D shapes of real objects. The objects are put in a parallelepiped box to simulate cargo inspection. Three real objects are tested and reconstructed. Due to the inherent ambiguity in the stereo X-ray images, we reconstruct 3-D shapes of the edges of the objects. The experimental results show the proposed technique can provide efficient visualization for cargo inspection.
In this paper, a fast 3D model extraction algorithm with an enhanced PBIL of preserving depth consistency is proposed for the extraction of 3D depth information from 2D images. Evolutionary computation algorithms are efficient search methods based on natural selection and population genetics. 2D disparity maps acquired by conventional matching algorithms do not match well with the original image profile in disparity edge regions because of the loss of fine and precise information in the regions. Therefore, in order to decrease the imprecision of disparity values and increase the quality of matching, a compact genetic algorithm is adapted for matching environments, and the adaptive window, which is controlled by the complexity of neighbor disparities in an abrupt disparity point is used. As the result, the proposed algorithm showed more correct and precise disparities were obtained than those by conventional matching methods with relaxation scheme.

We propose a novel eye tracking method that can estimate 3D world coordinates using an infrared (IR) stereo camera for indoor and outdoor environments. This method first detects dark evidences such as eyes, eyebrows and mouths by fast multi-level thresholding. Among these evidences, eye pair evidences are detected by evidential reasoning and geometrical rules. For robust accuracy, two classifiers based on multiple layer perceptron (MLP) using gradient local binary patterns (GLBPs) verify whether the detected evidences are real eye pairs or not. Finally, the 3D world coordinates of detected eyes are calculated by region-based stereo matching. Compared with other eye detection methods, the proposed method can detect the eyes of people wearing sunglasses due to the use of the IR spectrum. Especially, when people are in dark environments such as driving at nighttime, driving in an indoor carpark, or passing through a tunnel, human eyes can be robustly detected because we use active IR illuminators. In the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed method can detect eye pairs with high performance in real-time under variable illumination conditions. Therefore, the proposed method can contribute to human-computer interactions (HCIs) and intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) applications such as gaze tracking, windshield head-up display and drowsiness detection.

Drone has been widely used for many applications ranging from amateur and leisure to professionals to get fast and accurate 3-D information of the surface of the interest. Most of commercial softwares developed for this purpose are performing automatic matching based on SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) or SURF (Speeded-Up Robust Features) using nadir-looking stereo image sets. Since, there are some situations where not only nadir and nadir-looking matching, but also nadir and oblique-looking matching is needed, the existing software for the latter case could not get good results. In this study, a matching experiment was performed to utilize images with differences in geometry. Nadir and oblique-looking images were acquired through drone for a total of 2 times. SIFT, SURF, which are feature point-based, and IMAS (Image Matching by Affine Simulation) matching techniques based on affine transformation were applied. The experiment was classified according to the identity of the geometry, and the presence or absence of a building was considered. Images with the same geometry could be matched through three matching techniques. However, for image sets with different geometry, only the IMAS method was successful with and without building areas. It was found that when performing matching for use of images with different geometry, the affine transformation-based matching technique should be applied.

This paper proposes a statistical model of 3-D positions when tracking moving targets using the uncooled infrared (IR) stereo camera system. The proposed model is derived from two errors. One is the position error which is caused by the sampling pixels in the digital image. The other is the timing jitter which results from the irregular capture-timing in the infrared cameras. The capture-timing in the IR camera is measured using the jitter meter designed in this paper, and the observed jitters are statistically modeled as Gaussian distribution. This paper derives an integrated probability distribution by combining jitter error with pixel position error. The combined error is modeled as the convolution of two error distributions. To verify the proposed statistical position error model, this paper has some experiments in tracking moving objects with IR stereo camera. The 3-D positions of object are accurately measured by the trajectory scanner, and 3-D positions are also estimated by stereo matching from IR stereo camera system. According to the experiments, the positions of moving object are estimated within the statistically reliable range which is derived by convolution of two probability models of pixel position error and timing jitter respectively. It is expected that the proposed statistical model can be applied to estimate the uncertain 3-D positions of moving objects in the diverse fields.

This study is aimed to suggest the method, color channel seperation, can match the common points in real-time automatically. Image coordinates which was calculated from the acquired image with CCDcamera in this study is checked with two methods; check the accuracy of image coordinate and common point matching through correct sort. In conclusion of check, The RMSE of object coordinate which is calculated by photogrammetry program with image coordinate is in the expect RMSE of close-range photogrammetry, and Match-ing of common point is also performed correctly by using sort. For these reason, this color channel separation method is adequate for the acquisition of accurate image coordinates and the matching of the common points. I think that this method will be useful for the fields of industry which need fast-correct processing with acquired information in real-time.

This paper presents a phase-based stereo matching algorithm in order to efficiently extract 3-dimensional objects from two 2D images. Conventional phase-based methods, especially using windowed Fourier phases, inherit good properties in the case of hierarchical approaches, because they basically use a multi-resolution phase map. On the contrary, their computational costs are very heavy. Therefore, a fast hierarchical approach, using multi-resolution phase-based strategy and reducing the redundancy of phase calculations, is proposed in this pare. In addition, a structural matching algorithm on the phase domain is adopted to improve the matching quality. In experimental results, it is shown that the computation loads are considerably reduced about 8 times and stable outputs are obtained.

In the recent parking assistant systems, finding out the distance to the object behind a car is often performed by the range sensors such as ultrasonic sensors, radars. However, the installation of additional sensors on the used vehicle could be difficult and require extra cost. On the other hand, the motion stereo technique that extracts distance information using only an image sensor was also proposed. However, In the stereo rectification step, the motion stereo requires good features and exacts matching result. In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm that extracts the accurate distance information for the parallel parking situation using the consecutive images that is acquired by a rear-view camera. The proposed algorithm uses the quadrangle transform of the image, the horizontal line integral projection, and the blocking-based correlation measurement. In the experiment with the magna parallel test sequence, the result shows that the line-accurate distance measurement with the image sequence from the rear-view camera is possible.

3D image must have depth image for depth information in order for 3D realistic media broadcasting. We used generally belief propagation algorithm to solve probability model. Belief propagation algorithm is operated by message passing between nodes corresponding to each pixel. The high resolution image will be able to precisely represent but that required much computational complexity for 3D representation. We proposed fast stereo matching algorithm using belief propagation with multi-resolution based wavelet or lifting. This method can be shown efficiently computational time at much iterations for accurate disparity map.
