  • Synchrotron radiation of relativistic electrons is an important radiation mechanism in many astrophysical sources. In the sources where the synchrotron cooling timescale is shorter than the dynamical timescale, electrons are cooled down below the minimum injection energy. It has been believed that such fast-cooling electrons have a power-law distribution in energy with an index -2, and their synchrotron radiation has a photon spectral index -1.5. On the other hand, in a transient expanding astrophysical source, such as a gamma-ray burst (GRB), the magnetic field strength in the emission region continuously decreases with radius. Here we study such a system, and find that in a certain parameter regime, the fast-cooling electrons can have a harder energy spectrum. We apply this new physical regime to GRBs, and suggest that the GRB prompt emission spectra whose low-energy photon spectral index has a typical value -1 could be due to synchrotron radiation in this moderately fast-cooling regime.

  • KALIMER-600 is a sodium cooled fast reactor with a fast spectrum neutron reactor core. The NSSS design has three heat transport systems of a PHTS (Primary Heat Transport System), a IHTS (Intermediate Heat Transport System) and a SGS (Steam Generation System). PHTS is a pool type and has a large amount of sodium in the pool. The mechanical design targets are maintaining the enough structural integrity for a seismic load of SSE 0.3g and the thermal and mechanical loads by the high temperature environments and an economical competitiveness when compared with other reactor types.

  • This paper describes a fast harmonic estimation, referred to as Delta Adjustment (DA), using a low resolution pitch. The presented DA method is based on modification of the Generalized Dual Excitation (GDE) technique[1] which was proposed to improve speech enhancement performance. We introduce the GDE technique and modify it to be suitable for low bit rate harmonic coding that uses only an integer pitch estimate. Unlike the GDE, the DA matches a frequency-warped version of the original spectrum that conforms to a fixed pitch at all harmonic bands. In addition, complexity and performance of the presented method are described in comparison with those of the conventional Fractional Pitch (FP) based harmonic estimation. Experimental results showed that the DA algorithm significantly reduces the complexity of the FP method while maintaining the performance.

  • The dynamic instability for snapping phenomena has been studied by many researchers. Few paper deal with the dynamic buckling under the load with periodic characteristics, and the behavior under periodic excitation is expected the different behavior against STEP excitation. We investigate the fundamental mechanisms of the dynamic instability when the sinusoidal shaped arch structures are subjected to sinusoidal harmonic excitation with pin-ends. By using Newmark- β method, we can get the nonlinear displacement response, and using this analyze characteristics of the dynamic instability through the running response spectrum by FFT(Fast Fourier Transform).

  • This paper reports on the research which investigates acoustic signals acquired in turning with rough and finish simultaneously. The material is aluminum thin pipe. Two acoustic sensors were set on CNC machine. One was set on the finish bite and the other the rough. Two signals were first analyzed in order to consider how much the acoustic signal from the finish bite was coupled by that from the rough. A simple data collecting system to acquire signals from the finish was then determined because two acoustic signals were little coupled. Second the fundamental experiments were accomplished to study the effects of machine vibration and material state. The signal characteristics due to surface defects were studied from the collected acoustic signal data. The signal analysis was based on real time data, root mean squared average and frequency spectrum by fast fourier transform. As a result, the acoustic signals were made effects by machine condition, material structure. The acoustic signal from the finish bite was closely correlated with surface quality. Two types surface micro defects were then evaluated by the signal characteristics.

  • A design study was performed to improve the limit aseismic performance (LSP) of a primary heat transport system (PHTS) pump. This pump is part of the primary equipment of a prototype generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor (PGSFR). The LSP is the maximum allowable seismic load that still ensures structural integrity. To calculate the LSP of the PHTS pump, a structural analysis model of the pump was developed and its dynamic characteristics were obtained by modal analysis. The floor response spectrum (FRS) initiated from a safety shutdown earthquake (SSE), 0.3 g, was applied to the support points of the PHTS pump, and then the seismic induced stresses were calculated. The structural integrity was evaluated according to the ASME code, and the LSP of the PHTS pump was calculated from the evaluation results. Based on the results of the modal analysis and LSP of the PHTS pump, design parameters affecting the LSP were selected. Then, ways to improve the LSP were proposed from sensitivity analysis of the selected design variables.

  • This paper proposes a detection algorithm for each section which detects the voiced section, unvoiced section, and the silence section at each frame using a multi-layer perceptron neural network. First, a power spectrum and FFT (fast Fourier transform) coefficients obtained by FFT are used as the input to the neural network for each frame, then the neural network is trained using these power spectrum and FFT coefficients. In this experiment, the performance of the proposed algorithm for detection of the voiced section, unvoiced section, and silence section was evaluated based on the detection rates using various speeches, which are degraded by white noise and used as the input data of the neural network. In this experiment, the detection rates were 92% or more for such speech and white noise when training data and evaluation data were the different.

  • In this paper, a fast synchronization system using SAW TDL matched filter and SAW recirculation loop not only for acquisition but also tracking in the direct sequence spread spectrum communication receiver in case of low SNR was designed and its characteristics were investigated. When signal of 16dB SNR was inputed at the receiver, the PN code of the receiver could be synchronized from the extracted signal for synchronization through SAW TDL matched filter and SAM recirculation loop for 30 recirculations. And the average synchronization time of this system was calculated. From the results, we found that this synchronization system could achieve faster synchronization of PN codes in the receiver under the circumstances of low SNR than that of using only matched filter.

  • In this study, we developed a system to detect the various defects in the metallic objects using the phenomenon that the defects cause the changes of the natural resonant frequencies. Our system consists of a FFT Amp, an Auto Impact Hammer, a Hammer controller and a PC. Auto Impact Hammer creates vibrations in the metallic objects when tapped on the surface. These vibrational signals are converted to the voltage signals by an acceleration sensor attached to the metallic part surface. These analog voltage signals were fed into an ADC (analog-digital converter) and an FFT (fast fourier transform) conversion in the FFT Amp to obtain the digital data in the frequency domain. Labview graphical program was used to process the digital data from th FFT amp to display the spectrum. We compared those spectra with the standard spectrum to find the shifts in the resonant frequencies of the metal parts, and thus detecting the defects. We used PCB's acceleration sensor and TI's TMS320F28335 DSP (digital signal processor) to obtain the resolution of 2.93 Hz and to analyze the frequencies up to 44 kHz.

  • In this paper, we analyze and simulate the performance of a pilot signal detection algorithm based on fast Fourier transform (FFT) for several system parameters in order to detect advanced television system committee digital television (ATSC DTV) signals. Requirements for detecting DTV signals are analyzed. And the detection performance is compared according to sensing frequency and time. Form the simulation results, it is confirmed that the signal detection performance increases as the sensing frequency rises. The results of this paper can be applied for implementing cognitive radio (CR) systems in the frequency band of DTV signals.
