  • The studies on the shortest path algorithms based on Dijkstra algorithm has been done continuously to decrease the time for searching. $A^*$ algorithm is the most represented one. Although fast searching speed is the major point of $A^*$ algorithm, there are high rates of failing in search of the shortest path, because of complex and irregular networks. The failure of the search means that it either did not find the target node, or found the shortest path, witch is not true. This study proposed $A^*$ algorithm applying method that can reduce searching failure rates, preferentially organizing the relations between the starting node and the targeting node, and appling it in reverse according to the organized path. This proposed method may not build exactly the shortest path, but the entire failure in search of th path would not occur. Following the developed algorithm tested in a real complex networks, it revealed that this algorithm increases the amount of time than the usual $A^*$ algorithm, but the accuracy rates of the shortest paths built is very high.

  • This paper focuses on the problem of local obstacle avoidance of mobile robots. To solve this problem, the safety direction section search algorithm is suggested. This concept is mainly composed with non-collision section and collision section from the detecting area of laser scanning sensor. Then, we will search for the most suitable direction in these sections. The proposed local motion planning method is simple and requires less computation than others. An environment model is developed using the vector space concept to determine robot motion direction taking the target direction, obstacle configuration, and robot trajectory into account. Since the motion command is obtained considering motion dynamics, it results in smooth and fast as well as safe movement. Using the mobile base, the proposed obstacle avoidance method is tested, especially in the environment with pillar, wall and some doors. Also, the proposed autonomous motion planning and control algorithm are tested extensively. The experimental results show the proposed method yields safe and stable robot motion through the motion speed is not so fast.

  • We investigate that when we restrict the encoding modes on the enhancement layer based on that of the base layer exploiting the high correlation between the best modes at base and enhancement layers, we should determine the set of surviving search modes to yield the minimum excessive RD-cost caused by the restriction. Based on these sets, we implement a fast mode decision algorithm for H.264 Scalable Extension (SE). Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior in the sense of the RD-performance to the conventional mode restriction method which is based on the conditional probabilities of the best modes.

  • Internet routers perform packet forwarding which determines a next hop for each incoming packet using the packet's destination IP address. IP address lookup becomes one of the major challenges because it should be performed in wire-speed for every incoming packet under the circumstance of the advancement in link technologies and the growth of the number of the Internet users. Many binary search algorithms have been proposed for fast IP address lookup. However, tree-based binary search algorithms are usually unbalanced, and they do not provide very good search performance. Even for binary search algorithms providing balanced search, they have drawbacks requiring prefix duplication. In this paper, a new binary search algorithm which provides the balanced binary search and the number of its entries is much less than the number of original prefixes. This is possible because of composing the binary search tree only with disjoint prefixes of the prefix set. Each node has a prefix vector that has the prefix nesting information. The number of memory accesses of the proposed algorithm becomes much less than that of prior binary search algorithms, and hence its performance for IP address lookup is considerably improved.

  • In Block Matching Algorithm (BMA), a search pattern has a very important affect on the search time and the output quality. In this paper, we propose the HDS( Half Diamond Search) pattern based on the cross center-biased distribution property of a motion vector. At lust, the 4 points in the above, below, left, and right around the search center is calculated to decide the point of the MBD (Minimum Block Distortion). And an above point of the MBD is checked to calculate the SAD. If the SAD is less than the previous MBD, this process is repeated. Otherwise, the left and right points of MBD are calculated to decide the points that have the MBD between two points. These processes are repeated to the predicted direction for motion estimation. Experiments show that the speedup improvement of the proposed algorithm can be up to 23% while maintaining similar image quality.

  • In this paper, we design directional search pattern using motion direction biased characteristics of MVP distribution, and proposes a direction applied cross diamond search method that adaptively change search pattern according to moving direction of search point. Proposed method predict motion vectors from neighbor macro blocks, and define initial motion direction by using predicted motion vectors. It improve search efficiency by using alternately proposed search pattern according to motion direction of BMP in search process. The simulation results show that proposed method is able to fast motion estimation compared with conventional cross diamond search, according as it reduce computational complexity that is required of motion estimation with $0.43%{\sim}1.76%$.

  • This paper proposes a face tracking scheme that is a combination of a face detection algorithm and a face tracking algorithm. The proposed face detection algorithm basically uses the Adaboost algorithm, but the amount of search area is dramatically reduced, by using skin color and motion information in the depth map. Also, we propose a face tracking algorithm that uses a template matching method with depth information only. It also includes an early termination scheme, by a spiral search for template matching, which reduces the operation time with small loss in accuracy. It also incorporates an additional simple refinement process to make the loss in accuracy smaller. When the face tracking scheme fails to track the face, it automatically goes back to the face detection scheme, to find a new face to track. The two schemes are experimented with some home-made test sequences, and some in public. The experimental results are compared to show that they outperform the existing methods in accuracy and speed. Also we show some trade-offs between the tracking accuracy and the execution time for broader application.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive beamforming algorithm for array antenna. The proposed beamforming algorithm is based on EDS (Euclidean Direction Search) algorithm. Generally LMS algorithm has a much slower rate of convergence, but its low computational complexity and robustness make it a representative method of adaptive beamforming. Although the RLS algorithm is known for its fast convergence to the optimal Wiener solution, it still suffers from high computational complexity and poor performance. The proposed EDS algorithm has a rapid convergence better than LMS algorithm, and has a computational more simple complexity than RLS algorithm. In this paper we compared the efficiency of the EDS algorithm with a standard LMS algorithm.

  • The main feature of H.264 standard against conventional video standards is the high coding efficiency and the network friendliness. In spite of these outstanding features, it is not easy to implement H.264 codec as a real-time system due to its high requirement of memory bandwidth and intensive computation. Although the variable block size motion compensation using multiple reference frames is one of the key coding tools to bring about its main performance gain, it demands substantial computational complexity due to SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) calculation among all possible combinations of coding modes to find the best motion vector. For speedup of motion estimation process, therefore, this paper proposes fast algorithms for both integer-pel and fractional-pel motion search. Since many conventional fast integer-pel motion estimation algorithms are not suitable for H.264 having variable motion block sizes, we propose the motion field adaptive search using the hierarchical block structure based on the diamond search applicable to variable motion block sizes. Besides, we also propose fast fractional-pel motion search using small diamond search centered by predictive motion vector based on statistical characteristic of motion vector.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm for fractal image coding to shorten long time to take on fractal image encoding. For its performance evaluation, the algorithm compares with other traditional fractal coding methods. In the traditional fractal image coding methods, an original image is contracted by a factor in order to make an image to be matched. Then, the whole area of the contracted image is searched in order to find contractive transformation point of the original image corresponding to the contacted image. It needs a lot of searching time on encoding and remains limitation in the improvement of compression ratio. However, the proposed algorithm not only considerably reduces encoding tin e by using scaling method and limited search area method but also improves compression ratio by using bit-plane. When comparing the proposed algorithm with Jacquin's method, the proposed algorithm provides much shorter encoding time and better compression ratio with a little degradation of the decoded image quality than Jacquin's method.
