  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the interaction of progesterone with various cyclodextrins (CDs) in the aqueous solution and in solid state, and finally to formulate a parenteral aqueous formulation. CDs used were ${\alpha}-$, ${\beta}-$, and ${\gamma}-CD$, $2-hydroxypropyl-{\beta}-CD$ (HPCD), sulfobutyl $ether-{\beta}-CD$ (SBCD), $dimethyl-{\beta}-CD$ (DMCD) and $trimethyl-{\beta}-CD$ (TMCD). The solubility studies of progesterone were performed in the presence of various CDs as a function of concentration or temperature. The solubility of progesterone increased in the rank order of ${\alpha}-CD$ < ${\beta}-CD$ < ${\gamma}-CD$ < TMCD$ < HPCD < DMCD < SBCD. Addition of SBCD (200 mg/ml) in water increased the aqueous solubility $(9.36\;{\mu}g/ml)$ about 3,200 times, and lowering the temperature facilitated the solubilization of progesterone. However, the addition of HPCD and SBCD in 20:80 (v/v) polyethylene glycol 300-water and propylene glycol-water cosolvents markedly decreased the solubility of progesterone, compared with solubilizing effects in water. Physical mixtures and solid dispersions of progesterone with HPCD or SBCD were prepared, and evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), near IR spectroscopy and dissolution studies. By DSC and IR studies, it was found that progesterone was dispersed in HPCD in monotectic state and dissolved rapidly from both solid dispersions. Based on solubility studies, new aqueous progesterone fonnulations (5 mg/ml) containing SBCD (200 mg/ml) could be prepared and did not form precipitates even after 2 months at $4^{\circ}C$. The solution was transparent when mixed with normal saline and 5% dextrose injection at 1: 1, 1:10 and 1:20 (v/v) even after 7 days. Permeation rates of progesterone through a cellulose membrane from 20% PEG 300 solution $(50\;{\mu}g/ml)$ containing HPCD or SBCD were compared with oily formulation. Permeation of progesterone from oily formulation did not occur up to 8 hr, but aqueous formulations showed fast permeation rates from early stage of permeation study. The addition of HPCD or SBCD retarded the permeation rates of progesterone with the increase of CD concentrations, suggesting the possibility of a controlled absorption from the site administered intramuscularly. These results demonstrate that it is feasible to develop a new progesterone parenteral aqueous injection (5 mg/ml) using SBCD.

  • In the synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) via wet chemical reduction using tin(II) acetate precursor, the effects of green reducing agents (sugar) and a capping agent (gelatin) on the formation of NPs were analyzed as functions of synthesis conditions and time. When glucose was used as the reducing agent, it was observed that irregular chainlike shapes, aggregates of NPs, were formed during the synthesis at $70-110^{\circ}C$. The NPs were determined as $SnO_2$ from the fast Fourier transform (FFT) pattern. In the synthesis at $110^{\circ}C$ by using sucrose, fine spherical NPs of ~10 nm in diameter were formed after the synthesis time of 3 h. As the time increased to 9 h, the chainlike NP aggregates besides irregularly aggregated spherical NPs were also formed locally. However, the chainlike NP aggregates were only observed when the synthesis was conducted at $130^{\circ}C$. The spherical NPs and chainlike NP aggregates were analyzed to be pure Sn and $SnO_2$, respectively.

  • Mean background concentrations of greenhouse gases such as $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ were estimated on Ulleungdo using PICARRO Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS) analyzer. To improve the accuracy of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ concentrations, a standardized QA${\cdot}$QC (Quality Assurance Quality Control) procedure was employed with three steps: 1) the inspection procedure of physical limitation (e.g. the exclusion of data corresponding to the number of data of ${\leq}$50%) for hourly mean values, 2) a stage inspection (e.g. the use of data corresponding to ${\geq}15$ observations per day) for daily mean values, and 3) a fast fourier transform (FFT) analysis using curve-fitting methods for the investigation of climatic characteristics. The monthly mean concentrations of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ derived from three-step QA${\cdot}$QC procedure were then compared with those observed at Anmyundo (Korea) and Ryori (Japan). Overall, the error of mean $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ concentrations estimated in this study distinctly decreased. However, in comparison with their concentrations monitored at Ryori, the $CO_2$ concentration at estimated at Ulleungdo is soemwhat lower than that of Anmyundo due to the missing data, which is statistically significant. On the other hand, the former has a statistically significant higher value of $CH_4$ that of the latter.

  • In the OFDM system, IQ imbalance problem happens at the RF front-end of transceiver, which degrades the BER(bit error rate) performance because it affects the constellation in the received signal. Also, phase noise is generated in the local oscillator of transceivers and it destroys the orthogonality between the subcarriers. Conventional PNS algorithm is effective for phase noise suppression, but it is not useful anymore when there are jointly IQ(In-phase and Quadrature) imbalance and phase noise. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the effect of IQ imbalance and phase noise generated in the down-conversion of the receiver. Then, we estimate and compensate the IQ imbalance and phase noise at the same time. Compared with the conventional method that IQ imbalance after IFFT is estimated and compensated in front of FFT via the feedback, this proposed method extracts and compensates effect of IQ imbalance after FFT stage. In case IQ imbalance and phase noise exist at the same time, we can decrease complexity because it is needless to use elimination of IQ imbalance in time domain and training sequences and preambles. Also, this method shows that it reduces the ICI and CPE component using adaptive forgetting factor of MMSE after FFT.

  • Learning for thinking says the behavior of the organism changes as a result of practice or experience. It is very difficult to identify focusing ability objectively when students study. But, brain of the body is not so. EEG signal means continuously electric records of brain potential variation between two points on the scalp when brain activities take place. In types of EEG, there are delta(0~4Hz), theta(4~8Hz), alpha(8~13Hz), beta(13~30Hz) and gamma waves(30~50Hz). SMR waves and Mid-beta waves appear when focused for studying. Part for the most influence on concentrating reported that Mid-beta waves. In relation to brain activities, EEG has been actively researched for evaluating brain focus index system during learning and study. So, By using Biopac system for this study, measured brain wave was converted into FFT for extracting Mid-beta domain signals that are related to learning after giving focus invoked subjects to a small number of people. When concentrating, we measured the change in the power of the Mid-beta frequency domain and presented a correlation. Based on these results, we analyzed whether students are concentrated objectively on learning or not. and hope to offer more efficient learning method.

  • We propose a continuously varying contact pressure(CVCP)-adaptive feature extraction algorithm for pulse diagnostic analysis. The CVCP method measures the pulse waveform with continuously increasing contact pressure(CP). This method offer a high resolution signal of the pulse waveform amplitude(PWA) as a function of the contact pressure. Therefore it enables us to overcome the limitation of commercially available pulse-taking devices whose analysis rely on a few number of PWA-CP pairs. We show that an efficient feature extraction algorithm which covers the features of the CVCP-method can be developed by sequentially applying Fast Fourier Transform, peak detection by center-to-edges method, baseline drift removal, detection of the percussion wave upstroke by intersecting tangent method and detection of the analysis region. Finally, by a clinical study with 30 subjects, we show that our CVCP-adaptive feature extraction algorithm detected the upstroke with accuracy of 99.46% and sensitivity of 99.51%, which were about 4.82% and 2.46% increases respectively, compared to a conventional feature extraction method. The proposed CVCP method and the CVCP-adaptive feature extraction algorithm are expected to improve the accuracy in the pulse diagnostic algorithms such as floating/sunken pulse qualities and deficient/excess pulse qualities.

  • Analyses of the viscous and end effects on electromagnetic (EM) pumps of annular linear induction type for the sodium coolant circulation in Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactors have been carried out based on the MHD laminar flow analysis and the electromagnetic field theory. A one-dimensional MHD analysis for the liquid metal flowing through an annular channel has been performed on the basis of a simplified model of equivalent current sheets instead of three-phase currents in the discrete primary windings. The calculations show that the developed pressure difference resulted from electromagnetic and viscous forces in the liquid metal is expressed in terms of the slip, and that the viscous loss effects are negligible compared with electromagnetic driving forces except in the low-slip region where the pumps operate with very high flow velocities comparable with the synchronous velocity of the electromagnetic fields, which is not applicable to the practical EM pumps. A two-dimensional electromagnetic field analysis based on an equivalent current sheet model has found the vector potentials in closed form by means of the Fourier transform method. The resultant magnetic fields and driving forces exerted on the liquid metal reveal that the end effects due to finiteness of the pump length are formidable. In addition, a two-dimensional numerical analysis for vector potentials has been performed by the SOR iterative method on a realistic EM pump model with discretely-distributed currents in the primary windings. The numerical computations for the distributions of magnetic fields and developed pressure differences along the pump axial length also show considerable end effects at both inlet and outlet ends, especially at high flow velocities. Calculations of each magnetic force contribution indicate that the end effects are originated from the magnetic force caused by the induced current ( u x B ) generated by the liquid metal movement across the magnetic field rather than the one (E) produced by externally applied magnetic fields by three-phase winding currents. It is concluded that since the influences of the end effects in addition to viscous losses are extensive particularly in high-velocity operations of the EM pumps, it is necessary to find ways to suppress them, such as proper selection of the pump parameters and compensation of the end effects.

  • Background and Objectives : It has been shown that the epilaryngeal tube in the human airway is responsible for vocal ring, or the singer's formant. In previous study, authors showed that in trained tenors, besides the conventional singer's formant in the region of ,5500Hz, another energy peak was observed in the region of 8,000Hz. This peak was interpreted as the second resonance of the epilarynx tube. Singers in other voice categories who produce vocal ring are assumed to have the same peak, but no measurements have as yet been made. Materials and Methods : Fifteen tenors, fourteen baritones, seven sopranos and five mezzo sopranos attending the music college, department of vocal music who could reliably produce the head and chest registers were chosen for this study. Each subject was asked to produce an/ah/sound for at least three seconds for the head register sound(tenors ; G4, barions ; E4 sopranos ; F5 and mezzosopranos ; C5) and for the chest register sound (tenors ; C3, baritones ; D3, sopranos ; D4 and Mezzosoprano ; A3). The sound data was analyzed using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based power spectrum, Long term average(LTA) power spectrum using the FFT algorithm of the Computerized Speech Lab (CSL, Kay elemetrics, Model 4300B, USA). Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test of the Statistical Package for Social sciences(SPSS). Results : For head register sounds, a significant increase was seen in the 2,200-3,400Hz region(p<0.05) and the Similar to the head register sounds, there was a significant increase in energy in the four trained singer group compared with the untrained group in the 2,200-3,100Hz region(p<0.05), the 7,800-8,400Hz region(p<0.05) for the chest register sounds. Conclusions : When good vocal production was made for the head and chest registers, an energy peak was observed near 2,500Hz, a frequency already known as the "singer's formant', in all subjects in the study group. Another region of increased energy was observed around 8,000Hz that had not been noticed previously. The authors believe this region to be the second singer's formant.

  • A precedure for recovering surface displacement from a time series of pressure measured by a pressure gage in a shallow water (that is, FFTM, LCM. IWM) is investigated with respect to a proper cut-off-frequency of a frequency response function for the accurate recovery of wave height and period. The authors examined the applicability of above mentioned three transformation procedures through field observations and laboratory experiments and the following results are obtained. i) The cut-off-frequency of the frequency response function used in FFTM is deeply depend on both the frequency response of the pressure sensor and the water depth at the sensor. In this study, a relatively accurate surface displacement can be recovered when the frequency response function is cut off at the frequency corresponding to kh=3.0 where k is a wave number at the depth of h. The frequency response function in the region higher than the cut-off-frequency is set constant to be the value at the cut-off-frequency. ii) The transformed surface displacements by LCM are affected by the small waves of short periods included in the measured pressure. It is found that pressure variation whose local frequency is higher than kh=1.5 has to be neglected to recover surface displacement sufficiently. iii) In IWM, the linear pressure response function is usually utilized by multiplying a coefficient N which is a function of the frequency (or kh) and takes a value around unity. However, in this study, a constant value of N(=1.0) gives a relatively accurate recovery of surface displacements.

  • The objective of this study is to present and verify a method for evaluating the fundamental period of a rockfill dam using artificially generated vibration from a blasting event. In this study, the artificial blasting vibration tests were carried out at the site adjacent to the existing Seongdeok Dam for the first time in Korea. The artificial vibrations were induced by 4 different types of blasting with the various depths of blasting boreholes and the various explosive charge weight. During the tests, the accelerations time histories were recorded at the crest of the dam. In this acceleration history, only free vibration decay part following the main vibration event was extracted and it was analyzed by frequency domain analysis using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). From the results of FFT, the fundamental period of the target dam was evaluated. It is found that the effect of different blasting types on the fundamental period of the target dam is negligible and the fundamental period of the target dam can be consistently obtained by blasting vibration tests. Furthermore, it is found that the period of the target dam calculated by the method using blasting vibration test is similar to that obtained by the method of previous researchers using the real earthquake records. Therefore, in case that the earthquake record is not available, the fundamental period of a rockfill dam can be reasonably evaluated if blasting vibration test is allowed at the site adjacent to the dam.
