The Beijing Opera is one of the leading representatives of Chinese culture, which includes literature, music, dance, martial arts, and a type of performance that stems from the Chinese cultural history that is still relevant today. The purpose of this study is to develop fashion-cultural products from the Lian Pu of the Beijing Opera, a Chinese cultural tradition that receives abundant positive feedback from around the world, showing its value in both academic and practical fields. This study was carried out first as a theoretical study of the literature, definition and types of facial make up used in the Opera, as a way of examining the formative aspect. Secondly, an analysis was conducted on the main characters, 'Guan Yu' and 'Zhang Fei' of "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms", 'Li Kiu' and 'Lu Zhishen' of "All Men are Brothers" and 'Monkey King' of "Journey to West", employing the collection belonging to 'Yongqi Zhao' who is an expert on the Chinese Beijing Opera. Thirdly, two concepts were categorized, based on the analytic results of the abovementioned characters, each of which were then further categorized into three sub concepts. In regard to cultural development designs, the results of an analysis on the facial make-up color, form, and texture of the four main characters were utilized to construct the themes, "Modern Chic" and "Traditional Splendor". The simplest form that has been represented in the four figures has been applied to "Modern Chic" to show a modern image in which black, white and light blue has been used alongside the vivid red, which is a Chinese favorite, to highlight the characters. In "Traditional Splendor", which is focused on the stage art of the Opera, we see more artistic traditions and colors, to further appeal to our emotions. Traditional motifs have been applied using traditional Chinese arts, in order to develop strong and brilliant colors. The two styles of cultural products were developed in the form of women's scarves and men's ties; a total of 24 designs were expressed, using Illustrator CS6. In the final step, 4 scarves and 6 ties were produced as a sample, using high quality silk. The development of these cultural fashion products will bring an opportunity to show how Chinese traditional culture can be widely utilized in commercial market design.
This study reinterpreted the formative design elements of traditional grate patterns to create new lattice patterns and come up with a design concept for fashion-cultural products that highlight the uniqueness of traditional Korean culture and its characteristic features. Methodologically, the computer design software programs Adobe Illustrator CS2 and Adobe Photoshop were used to make grate patterns motifs. and they were applied to scarves and again to blouses using a three-dimensional simulation technique. In this study, three basic motifs for a new formative image were set using graphical functions such as omitting, simplifying, overlapping, repeating and reducing shapes based on the images of traditional 亞-shaped, arched and floral lattices, and each motif was expanded to have two variations with different colors applied to them. The direction of basic motif design was set to fit for each of fashion-cultural items such as scarves and blouses. Basic colors for motifs were arranged to create a colorful and modern but staid image in pink, blue, purple, green, yellow and brown tones. Based on a developed motif, changes were made in blouse design with lattice patterns through a variety of effects such as repetition, rotation, cross-arrangement, and oblique arrangement, and three-dimensional simulation was used to bring the design to life. Scarf design employed and applied the existing motifs in an appropriate manner for design purposes and reconstructed them through such effects as repetition, rotation, compositional variation and gradation to express a gorgeous and refined image.
This study aims to analyze the color characteristics of Japanese cultural product shops and differences in business categories by analyzing the colors of the Gion Shopping Street in Kyoto, Japan. Through the study, the traditional colors are reflected not only in the domestic cultural products but also the interior colors of shops. That way, visitors can be influenced naturally and gain indirect cultural experience to form a good image of Korea, which can help to improve sales of cultural products. The analysis was conducted through the colors of Munsell to determine the overall, dominant, assort, and accent colors based on categories of goods to identify the characteristics of the traditional Japanese cultural product shop. Among the 85 shops that were surveyed, YR and W frequently appeared as chromatic and neutral colors. Dominant was W, and assort was YR. B, P and Y also showed up. In color combination analysis, 35.3% was contrasted. For the hue, 32.9% was dark. Based on goods categories, confectionary shops used YR mainly, while souvenir and fashion accessory shops used W the most. Restaurants mostly had W as thedominant and YR for assorting. Cafes and art shops used Bk the most. The interior colors of cultural products shops should maintain the atmosphere of tradition and convey images of the products well. Based on this research, Korea also needs to actively reflect the interior designs of cultural product shops using traditional colors.
Modern society is a multi-cultural consumer society, and there are multiple trends to cater to the tastes of diverse consumers with different sociocultural background. To grasp fashion trends in fast-changing society, how consumer life is changing and what sort of trend is prevailing should be understood above all. A major fashion trend keeps on changing in every season, and that is an extensive and compound measure of what affects the lives and values of cultural receivers who take the lead in it. The purpose of this study was to delve into what sorts of trends were presented in the 21st century's different cultures, how those cultures were reflected in fashion trends, and how design elements predicted by fashion trends could serve as the sources of design that could create a new fashion. The findings of the study were as follows: First of all, the theories of popular culture and trends were reviewed to describe how general receivers found meaning and delight in the products of cultural industry in their own way and how the products were converted into diverse cultural media. Secondly, consumer styles were discussed by classifying consumers into six groups, twixter, duppie, Ubi-Nomad, NONOS, LOHAS and chav, who were generated by changing cultural codes. Thirdly, sociocultural trends and consumer changes brought a lot of diverse changes to fashion trends. The visual materials about the 2005 S/S, F/W Collection were examined to track how changing trends affected fashion style.
This study selects camellia flowers as a material for design development and created patterns by simplifying the image of camellia flowers and combining it with a geometrical motif. It it applied them to various fields to develop design content for fashion cultural products that were Korean, modern, and competitive. For this purpose, this paper used Adobe Illustrator CS2 to turn the camellia flower into a motif and develop it into a pattern. Based on the realistic form of camellia flower, this paper set 3 basic motifs of new formative images, using graphic elements, such as omission of a form, simplification, overlapping, repetition, and reduction, and it also developed two transformed motifs by applying a different color to each motif. This paper repetitively arranged each motif in the background of a diamond shape, a square, and a circle, and it combined each motif with the patterns of marcel, stairs, and stripes, through which it expressed the combination of the geometrical patterns and the flower patterns. Through the application of repetitive and combined patterns of each motif, the enlargement and reduction of motifs, the repetition of motifs, the combined use of motifs, and the change in colors and layout, this paper used the motifs of various fashion cultural products, such as scarves, neckties, and T-shirts.
This research aims to develop cultural products for professional sales after producing creative products utilizing dinosaur characters, which are the representative exhibited item of dinosaur-centered museum. There are seven museums in Korea whose theme is dinosaur. There are three dinosaur museums among them, Goseong Dinosaur Museum at Kyungnam, Mokpo Natural History Museum, and Seodaemun Museum of Natural History. While inspecting cultural products within the museum shops of these three museums, general products occupy more than 80% of all the products rather than products related to dinosaurs, and has a problem that most products are decorative ones. This resulted from that enterprises supplying these products are not professional ones and are irrelevent to cultural industry; as result, purpose of conveying culture through products is lost. This research develops dinosaur characters utilizing computer 3D techniques in order to imbue unique characteristics to dinosaur museums and informing cultural speciality of our country. In addition, this research presented design method of cultural products by grafting traditional symbols onto these characters, and actually produced 11 items of 5 kinds: toys(dolls), clothes(T-shirts, pajamas, socks), stationery(notebooks, memo), accessaries (bags, umbrellas, handkerchief), and others(cups). On the items above, dinosaur characters are variously utilized in form of printing, embroidery, and stickers by using computer 3D technique. A cultural product is a tangible form which could show variety of cultural characteristics of our nation that could spread the culture through the consumers, and such type of purchasing could increase values of cultural industry by creating economic profits; such points are the significance of this study.
The MICE industry is a new industry that combines corporate meetings, intensive tours, conventions and exhibitions. The convention (the international conference itself) is a conception born from the interpretation of multiple industries such as conferences, incentive tourism, exhibitions and fairs. It is therefore necessary to develop products that can contribute to the revitalization of the MICE industry. We will participate in globalization era trends by developing original design with unique color sense as well as traditional beauty and elegance that can represent the Korean Wave in order to develop high value-added fashion cultural products. We examine the formative characteristics of Chogakbo and apply them to the harmony of geometrical characteristics and colors. The morphological characteristics and sewing method of the Korean traditional 'fo' were also used for shirt designs. It is a fashion cultural product that applies to the Korean Cheokagbo design as well as maintains a basic aloha shirt design that can be worn by everyone (regardless of gender and age) to make it globally acceptable. We used a simple and interesting geometric configuration of the surface represented by the surface composition of the patchwork as well as proposed a design costume by 3D clothing simulation work. The research results can be used as basic data for the domestic fashion market and cultural goods market.
The purpose of this study is to develop a textile pattern design using the columnar joints motif and a Tyvek fashion clutch bags using it. As a research method, first, through a literature review, columnar joint and Tyvek are understood, and design cases were considered. Second, through a survey, the purchase perception and design preference of columnar joints cultural products were analyzed. Third, based on the results of the survey on color and print, the pattern design for each type of columnar joint were developed, and the uv-printed Tyvek clutch bag was developed. The results of this study are as follows. First, the reason why the public was not attracted to the purchase of cultural products was dissatisfaction with practicality, price adequacy, and aesthetics. Therefore, it was analyzed that quality, practicality, price, carry-on storage, collection value, and casualness, as well as aesthetic design were important factors for purchasing factors pursued by consumers. Second, consumers preferred small goods the most for cultural products, and they pursued the use of colorful and contrasting colors, modern and geometric patterns, and eco-friendly materials, such as Tyvek. Third, columnar joint can be classified into three cross sections and four arrangements. The design unit of the columnar joint could be expressed as a hexagonal column, and 12 different pattern designs could be developed according to the cross sections and arrangements type. In addition, it was found that it was easy to produce fashion products suitable for the sensibility of modern people by utilizing Tyvek materials.
Cultural value is widely accepted as the crucial concept in understanding consumer behavior: cultural values influence consumption values, which determine choices of consuming everyday products and services. The objectives of this study were to (a) identify the difference between cultural and consumption values in the Korean fashion industry and (b) to explain the difference using the existing theories introducing fashion system, which are Solomon(2002)'s cultural production model in marketing area and Hamilton(1997)'s fashion system arbiter in clothing area. The qualitative data used to identify cultural values were 160 apparel advertisements listed in a fashion magazine issued in 2002. Utilizing the convenient sampling method, the quantitative data used to identify consumption values were gathered by surveying female university students aged over 20 living in the Seoul metropolitan area. Of 369 returned questionnaires, 255 were used in factor analysis and paired t-test. Cultural value ignored functional aspect of apparel while it was one of the most salient factors for consumption value. With respect to success and fashion orientation factors, cultural value highly appreciated them while they were the least considered factors for consumption value. These implicate that the Korean fashion industry can be explained by Hamilton's macro-level cultural and fashion system arbiters and cultural production model as well. Introducing macro-level perspectives about fashion system, this study encourages researchers to expand their research spectrum from micro-level consumers to macro-level fashion industry, which has long been neglected by the fashion marketing researchers in Korea.
The aim of this study is to develop fashion cultural product designs in order to promote the Iksan region by using motifs from the Mireuksaji, Iksan's most representative archeological site of Baekje culture. The fashion cultural products designs developed by applying cultural resources can be effective at enhancing our cultural identity. Adobe Illustrator CS4 and Adobe Photoshop CS4 were used to reconstruct motifs from the Sumakse tiles and the bronze horse figure in the Mireuksaji Museum. The Iksan brand slogan "Amazing Iksan" was combined with the bronze horse to emphasize the local cultural identity. The motifs from the Mireuksaji were modified and stylized to make different patterns and these patterns were repeated in various ways to be applied to necktie and scarf designs. The motifs for necktie designs were double-row chrysanthemum tiles and phoenix tiles, and the motifs for scarf designs were the double-row lotus tiles and the bronze horse artifacts. Different colorways were chosen and the value of each color was displayed in the CMYK percentages. As a result, eight necktie designs and twelve scarf designs were proposed. The motifs and patterns developed in this study can be used to introduce Iksan's distinct history as the birthplace of Baekje culture. It is also expected that the result of this study can advance the promotion of Korean traditional culture internationally.
