The Symbolic Meanings of Louis XVI's Costumes in the Portraits

  • This study examines King Louis XVI costumes and his portraits according to symbolic meanings. This study analysis of costumes comes from portraits related various domestic and overseas literature, preliminary study papers, and web sites. Omnipotence, activity, nobility, openness and benevolence were distinguished in the symbolic meaning expressed in the portraits of King Louis XVI. Louis XVI in a portrait was drawn with god or expressed as a martyr and symbolically showed the omnipotence of god. Louis XVI was symbolized as almighty god by maximizing the authority and dignity of the king through the hands of justice that were used as a background or portrait accessory and a costume with the symbol of House of Bourbon. Kings of many generations were expressed as authoritative through portraits. However, Louis XVI showed a proletarian aspect in ordering portraits to reflect the daily working image of communicating with citizens. Active images such as the king riding a horse or administering the state affairs were emphasized in a political and military perspective; in addition, the benevolence of the king was symbolically presented through a family portrait. This symbolically signified that the king is a warm-hearted person who passionately takes care of state affairs and loves the people through a noble element coming from pastel colors and attributes of red colors. Historically, the political incompetence and indifference of kings was fragmentally emphasized; however, these portraits considered the king as one who tried to fulfill duties as the true king with a great interest in politics and the people.

  • Any organization's Six Sigma program may be at high risk without heeding the lessons learned from the past and that tries to operate without a robust business foundation. A foundation that preferably should consist of stepping-stones such as a 5-S house-keeping program, an effective Integrated Management System (IMS), which includes a strong focus on planning for quality to fully capture the Voice of the Customer (VOC), and an organization-wide training scheme, as well as a reliable Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ) system. That's the best advise I can give to any organization that wishes to embark on a Six Sigma improvement program and hope to be successful. The paper will elaborate on the above issues and provide suggested solutions based on the review of published historical information and the experiences encountered over the last four decades by the author, as a quality practitioner and consultant, in industries that produced safety-critical product. This author maintains that few fundamentally new or useful things have been created in the field of Quality during the last couple of decades. Nevertheless, this paper deliberates on a number of relatively “newer” issues including the concept of “three types of customers”, the CTC, “Critical To Customer” term, the eight Quality Management Principles of the new ISO 9000 family, the growth of industry-specific standards, the adoption of Integrated Management Systems, the rebirth of AS2561 COQ standard, the spread of Six Sigma as well as related ASQ certification and the need for a robust business foundation to ensure Six Sigma survival.

Damage Report on a Newly Recorded Coleopteran Pest, Aphanisticus congener (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) from Turfgrass in Korea

  • Aphanisticus congener is a newly recorded buprestid (Coleoptera) insect pest of turfgrass in Korea. This buprestid pest was initially found from turfgrass conservation site in a greenhouse in Jinju, Gyeongnam province, Korea in July, 2014. The Aphanisticus in the family Buprestidae is a leaf miner. A. congener is the close species of A. aeneus which was firstly reported as sugarcane leaf sucker in India. A. congener was active from early July to late August in the greenhouse. Damage by the insect led to drying out and browning of turfgrass leaf because larva fed on cell sap of leaves and adult fed on leaf surface. A. congener damaged Zoysia japonica, Z. sinica, Conodon dactylon, and Poa pratensis when adults were artificially released into potted turfgrasses in the laboratory. In green house, A. congener damaged Z. japonica, Z. macrostachya, Z. matrella, Z. sinica, Conodon dactylon, and hybrid zoysiagrass. However, no damage symptoms were observed from the same turfgrass accessions in the nearby field of the greenhouse. Thus, the new coleopteran pest may be a warm-adapted pest for turfgrass, damaging turfgrass leaf only in warmer conditions.

폐경기 여성의 폐경 지식 정도와 폐경 관리 실태 조사 (A Study on the Degree of Knowledge of Menopause and Management of Menopausal Women)

  • The purpose of study was to identify the degree of menopausal of age knowledge and management of menopausal women. The data were collected from April 1st to May 31th in 1998 and 368 total. Data were analyzed by SPSS/PC program. The results were as follows. 1. The average age was 45-50 years. General health state was good 71% mosty they were house keeper. 87.5% had religion. The married woman was 86.1%. Menopause treatment experience was 88.1%. The educational state was below middle school, 72.3%. 2. The high score of knowledge of menopause was the item of whether they conceive or not after menopause, irregularity of menopause, menopausal symptoms, of the possibility osteoporosis. 3. The score of knowledge was the highest at the group 45-50, the high education, and the high number of family members. 4. The score of management was the highest in self control category. No drinking & no smoking items were the highest. Sexual management and management by professional person were low score. 5. The higher score of the knowledge of menopause, the higher score of the management.

Establishment of a High-Throughput Screening System for Caspase-3 Inhibitors

  • In most tissues, apoptosis plays a pivotal role in normal development and for regulating cell number, thus inappropriate apoptosis underlies a variety of diseases. Caspase-3 is one of a family of caspases that are mainly involved in the apoptotic signal transduction pathway, where caspase-3 acts as an effect molecule to proteolytically cleave intracellular substrates that are necessary for maintaining cell survival. Recent evidences show that apoptotic cell death can be blocked by inhibiting caspase-3, suggesting its inhibitors have potential to be therapeutic drugs for the diseases related with inappropriate apoptosis. We have established a screening system to search caspase-3 inhibitors from chemical libraries stocked in our institute. The enzyme assay is configured entirely in 96-well format, which is easily adapted for high throughput screening. Before performing mass screening, 80 in-house compounds were screened as a preliminary experiment, and we found that morin hydrate inhibited caspase-3 by 66.4 % at the final concentration of 20 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$.

철도 역명의 유래를 통하여 본 파사드 이미지 및 감성반응에 관한 연구 -충청권 광역 전철화 노선을 중심으로- (A Study on the Facade Image and Emotional Response considering Geographical Language of Railway Station - focused on Metropolitan Line of Chungcheong Railway -)

  • This study is aimed to reflect the current status survey, analysis and response of 10 railway stations using geographical names in one of 19 stations located on Gyeongbu, Honam and Chungbuk line. Most railway stations in the study have shown normal images that are close to the standard type by selecting similar building materials rather than reflecting geographical features. Aside from the shape of the traditional Korean house in Cheongju, almost all newly constructed stations tend to incorporate light gray plating material on their modern exterior to produce Family look design as a railroad station. According to a survey of the sensitivity of the station's name, Osong Station was 73.6 percent, Gyeryong Station 67.3 percent, Heukseok-ri Station was 64.5 percent, Shintan-jin 62.6 percent, and Yeonsan Station 57 percent, more than half. Therefore, the results of the five stations were presented as a calculation and proposed design release focusing on the facades of each station. Each of these stations suggested a way to express the facade design image, considering the railway operation status of Korea Railroad, the area of the station and other surroundings.

다가구 주택의 매트리스 화재 시 차동식 스포트형 감지기의 온도상승 및 동작시간 분석 (Analysis of Temperature Rise and Operation Time of Differential Spot Type Detector in Case of Mattress Fire in Multi-family House)

  • This study developed a scenario to understand the reaction rate and operational time according to RTI value of rate of rise detector in each type in case of fire mattress. In the results of analyzing the reaction rate and operational time of detector in each scenario, in case when installing a single detector, the elevated temperature per minute was raised to 8℃/min ~ 9℃/min. In case when installing two detectors, it was raised to 9℃/min ~ 10℃/min. In case when installing three detectors, it was raised to 10℃/min. The horizontal distance between detector and mattress was 1.8m~2.5m. Whenever the number of detectors was increased, the horizontal distance was decreased. The operational time of detector was within maximum 540 seconds and minimum 420 seconds. As the research tasks in the future, there should be the researches on the effects of reaction rate of detector on the evacuation in case of fire through the result value of RSET by setting up the latency until the detector operates, and the researches on the safety by understanding if the operational time of detector is suitable for the evaluation standard of performance-centered design.

  • Training and process analysis in the construction industry has not taken full advantage of new technologies such as building information modeling(BIM). The purpose of this research is to develop a framework for the virtual interactive construction education system using three dimensional technologies. The modules will simulate the construction process for a facility from start to finish using information drawn from real projects in the built environment. These modules can be used as training tools for new employees where they attempt to optimize time and cost in a virtual environment given a limited number of equipment, time and employee options. They can also be used as a process analysis tool for new construction where a number of situational variables can change leading to exposure of potential risk. These modules would be particularly useful for repetitive construction where the initial project is analyzed for optimization and risk mitigation. This paper describes the framework and shows a residential construction example using a 900 square foot wood frame single family house designed for the United States.

Alternative Strategies to Central Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning

  • Central heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is one of the largest consumers of energy in the residential sector. This project explores the use of multiple HVAC units and/or Zoning in a single residence to reduce energy loads. The energy consumption data of a detached single-family home using two HVAC units, one primary for the main house and a secondary HVAC for a casita, was collected for the same month for two consecutive years, along with details related to the outdoor temperature and the square footage being air-conditioned by each HVAC. A regression algorithm was trained using the above details to find the relation between the parameters. Next, based on the occupancy and usage patterns, the HVAC was redesigned assuming more area under the secondary HVAC unit. The trained algorithm was then used to make energy usage predictions for the revised primary HVAC area, with the assumption that the secondary HVAC unit was turned off. The results were compared with existing energy usage data. It was determined that there were significant energy savings in the second scenario. It is expected that this study and its findings will help future research projects explore more ideas as alternatives to central HVAC, in improving the economic viability of existing options, and in developing a savings calculation tool that will help consumers make informed decisions on their best alternatives to central HVAC.

Palmes tube를 이용한 도시 주택의 옥내외 $NO_2$ 농도에 관한 조사연구 (A Survey on the Level of $NO_2$ Inside and Outside Urban Homes by Palmes Tube)

  • 연자들은 동하계의 실내의 공기오염의 주인자 가운데 하나인 $NO_2$에 대하여 주택의 종류(아파트, 독립주택)와 취사용 주연료의 종류(연탄, 가스)별로 부산지역의 110개 주택을 대상으로 주택 옥내 (부엌, 거실, 침실)와 옥외의 농도를 각각 산정하여 현재의 $NO_2$ 오염정도를 파악함은 물론 실내 $NO_2$농도와 부엌환기, 가족수, 흡연등과의 관련성 및 $NO_2$의 영향(천식)에 관한 기본적 연구를 실시함으로써 $NO_2$에 의한 인체장해 예방을 위한 자료로 제시하고자 본 연구를 실시하였다. 조사기간은 1984년 10월부터 1985년 9월까지 1년간이었으며, $NO_2$측정은 Palmes method에 의하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 동계 도시 주택의 옥내외 $NO_2$의 평균농도는 부엌 0.029($0.010{\sim}0.085$)ppm, 거실 0.022$(0.005{\sim}0.056)$ppm, 침실 0.017$(0.005{\sim}0.055)$ppm 및 옥외0.021$(0.007{\sim}0.055)$ppm등이었고, 하계에는 부엌 0.022$(0.005{\sim}0.063)$ppm, 거실 0.018$(0.005{\sim}0.056)$ppm, 침실 0.016$(0.004{\sim}0.057)ppm$ 및 옥외 0.016$(0.004{\sim}0.038)$ppm등으로 동하계 공히 부엌내 농도가 최고이었으며 하계보다 동계에 비교적 높은 농도를 나타내었다. 2) 주택과 취사용 주연료의 종류별 도시 주택 옥내외 $NO_2$ 평균농도는 동계의 경우 연탄을 주로 사용하는 아파트군에서 그리고 하계에는 가스를 사용하는 아파트군에서 각각 최고이었다. 3) 주택의 종류별 도시 주택의 옥내외 $NO_2$의 평균 농도는 동하계 공히 독립주택군에 비하여 아파트군에서 비교적 높았다. 4) 취사용 주연료의 종류별 도시 주택 옥내외 $NO_2$의 평균농도는 동계에는 연탄을 주로 사용하는 경우, 그리고 하계에는 가스를 주로 사용하는 경우에서 각각 비교적 높았다. 5) 부엌 환기 여부, 가족수, 부모의 흡연여부 및 소아 천식병력 유무에 따른 도시 주택 실내 $NO_2$의 평균 농도는 각 속성에 따라 다소의 차이를 보였으나 대부분 통계적으로는 유의하지 않았다.
