Purpose: Purpose of the study was to investigate task performance, importance, knowledge, and level of job stress and job satisfaction of nurses working in a hospital with no family or family paid auxiliary caregivers. Methods: Participants were 119 nurses working in hospitals with no guardians. The questionnaire contained 488 items: general characteristics, performance, importance, knowledge of nursing tasks, job stress and job satisfaction. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS/WIN 21.0. Results: Most frequently performed nursing tasks were patient nursing management and information management. Nursing tasks perceived as most important were medication and transfusion and nursing tasks with the highest knowledge were also medication and transfusion. Nursing task (subcategory) most frequently performed was oral medication. Nursing task (subcategory) perceived as most important was mental status observation and nursing task (subcategory) with the highest knowledge was vital sign check. Nurses' job stress was significantly associated with job satisfaction. The mean scores for nurses' job stress and job satisfaction were low. Conclusion: The results indicate that nurses working in hospitals with no guardians perform daily living assistance services more often than previously, and nurses need to be prepared to do these tasks.
The purpose of this study was to identify the factors determining the participation of the poor elderly in economic activity. This study analyzed secondary data of the second wave of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Binary logistic regression was used to identify the factors that are associated with the economic activity of the poor elderly. The results of the analyses showed that age, gender, region, public assistance, education, health status, chronic illness, contacts with acquaintances, and support from children were associated with participation in economic activity. The study's findings have several implications for policies and services. The study identified the need for an age- and gender-specific approach to promoting participation in economic activity among the poor elderly. Regional differences should also be considered in the creation of work opportunities for older adults. In terms of human capital, the positive effect of good health indicates that strategies are needed to address the needs of older adults with health issues. In addition, there is a need for more jobs for elderly job seekers with high levels of education. Finally, policy makers and practitioners should explore interventions for enhancing the social network involvement and community support for the elderly living in poverty.
Korea has not tried any food consumption survey so far except the national nutrition survey, which does not show food consumption patterns of different income stratas. The results of the family income and expenditure survey(FIES) by the national statistical office can be precious sources which show household food consumption patterns due to large, random. Samples, year-round survey period and socioeconomic background data. This study analyzed the FIES data to find out food consumption patterns including nutrient intakes and frequently consumed foods by households among different monthly income levels. Big difference was found in food consumption patterns among the quartile-income groups especially the amount of consumed foods, food expenditure, and nutrient intakes. For every food item, the higher the monthly invomr, yhr motr og goof yhry vondumrf. The monthly food expenditure of higher higher income strata was composed with higher percentage of relatively expensive foods compared to other stratas. Nutrient intake levels of lower income strata were 50-60% of the RDA, which showed the necessicity of food assistance programs for those high risk groups to complement the nutritional difficiency. The purpose of this paper is to examine levels of financial knowledge, to identify the financial education needs of college students, and to show how financial knowledge and education needs correlate. The results of this study indicated that the level of understanding of economy was the highest among the seven categories, whereas the overall level of financial knowledge was less than 50%. The need for financial education was relatively high in various topics of financial management, especially financial planning and savings. There was no significant relationship between knowledge level and educational needs except between financial planning and investment. Students who understand financial planning better want more financial education. College students in this study were not financially independent from their parents, receiving allowance and assistance in tuition payment, so their financial experiences were limited. Students who understood financial management showed greater need of financial education and had more financial experience. The findings in this study suggested that college should provide formal financial education as an elective course, which should include content related to financial planning and various financial products.
The number of nurses per bed at acute-stage hospitals is quite low in Korea compared with other OECD countries. In order to prevent the degradation of the quality of inpatient nursing services due to insufficient nurse staffs, the national health insurance introduced the differentiated nursing care fee system. This did not work as a motive for inducing the employment of nursing staff due to insufficient cost compensation. Because of insufficient nursing staff, family members have to stay with the patient or patients have to hire a personal care attendant. This increases the burden and cost to families. For the activation of hospitals without guardians, there should be policies for raising additional nursing staff such as standardizing jobs among nursing staff, particularly between nurses and nursing assistants, setting adequate standards of staffing in nursing according to medical service, substantiating the cost of nursing under the differentiated nursing care fee system, improving the medical fee system of hospitals without guardians including health insurance payment, supplying nursing staff stably through improving their working conditions such as providing child rearing services and salary increase, clarifying the qualification of personal care attendants working at acute.stage hospitals, developing indexes for assessing the quality of nursing care services, and monitoring for the management of uniform quality.
The purpose of this study is to compare the characteristics of the demented elderly and normal elderly over 65 staying at home in Seoul. Here, the demented elderly are defined as the aged who score under 20 on the MMSE-K testing. The subjects were 15.104 elders in home. The method is a cross-sectional study home visiting survey with questionnaires. Data analyses were conducted by using frequency, percentage, t-test and ANOVA procedures. Results are as follows: First, general characteristics such as sex, age, marriage, education, physical health, and family characteristics such as economic level and single living showed a significant variance between demented elderly and normal elderly. Second, the demented elderly showed a significantly high point of AD and IADL. Third, in contrast with normal agents, the dementia showed a high need for assistance from the care giver but followed the same pattern. In conclusion, the above findings suggested that a social support system should be developed for the demented elderly and care givers in the home.
Using the 1999 National Survey of America's Families(NSAF), this study investigated the factors that affect child care expenses and examined financial and social support of single mother families in the U. S. In this study, 4,676 single mother families with children aged twelve and under are included for the analytical sample. About half of all single mother families with children under age 12 had some amount of child care expenses in 1999. Monthly child care expenses for those who had child care expenses was an average of $255 and it accounted for about 15 percent of their family earnings. The profile of financial and social support showed that about one-quarter of single mothers received financial support for child care, one-fifth received free child care by relatives and about 40 percent received child support payments from nonresident fathers. Tobit analysis results showed that the significant factors that affected child care expenses were mother's age, marital status, educational level, employment status, the numbers of children aged 0-5, family income, the receipt of public assistance and financial support for child care.

Background: Although caregiving to patients with terminal illness is known to be a stressful burden to family members, little attention has been focused on work-related problems. We aimed to investigate employment status and work-related difficulties of family caregivers of terminal cancer patients, comparing with the general population. Methods: Using structured questionnaires, we assessed family caregivers of 481 cancer patients determined by physicians to be terminally ill, from 11 university hospitals and the National Cancer Center in Korea. Results: Among 381 family caregivers of terminal cancer patients (response rate, 87.6%), 169 (43.9%) were not working before cancer diagnosis, but currently 233 (63.7%) were not working. Compared with the general population (36.5%), the percentage of not working among the family caregivers was higher (OR=2.39; 95%CI=1.73-3.29). A major reason for not working was to provide assistance to the patients (71.6%). 40.6% of those who continued working and 32.3% of those who not working family members reported extreme fatigue. Caregivers of old age, those who were female, those with a lower household income, and those caring for patients with a low performance status were not working at a more significant rate. Conclusion: Family caregivers of terminal cancer patients suffer job loss and severe work-related difficulties, probably due to caregiving itself and to fatigue. We need to develop supportive programs to overcome the burden of caregivers of the terminally ill.
