  • This research examines the effect of outside director system which has been legislated after financial crisis in Korea. Outside director system is based on agency theory which assumes that a manager is selfish and opportunistic in situation where ownership and management of a firm is separated. In this situation, outside director system has an important function to monitor and keep in check a manager. Thus, we examined that outside director system works as a monitoring mechanism in Korea. And we tested that above effect is weakened in family CEO firms where it is different from assumption of agency theory in Korea. According to empirical result with 282 sample firm, it is confirmed that outside director system reduces agency cost. In family CEO firms, however, this agency cost-reducing effect becomes weak. This result suggests that outside director system needs be cautiously managed without focusing on only monitoring function.

  • In what was labeled the "nut rage" incident, the vice president of Korean Air, Hyun-Ah Cho (Heather Cho), demonstrated behavior that exemplifies corporate transgression and deviation from societal moral standards toward a flight attendant aboard a flight. Such behavior instigated the public to express negative sentiment on various social media platforms. This study investigates word-of-mouth network on YouTube in response to the crisis, patterns of co-commenting activities across selected YouTube videos, as well as public responses to the incident by employing social and semantic network analysis. A total of 512 YouTube videos featuring the crisis from December 8, 2014 through November 11, 2018, and 52,772 public comments to the videos were collected. The central videos in the network successfully attracted the public's attention and engagements. The results suggest that the video network was decentralized, with multiple videos acting as hubs in the network. The public commented on various videos instead of focusing on a few. The contents of influential videos uploaded by popular news organizations revealed not only Cho's behaviors related to the nut rage crisis but also unrelated illegal behaviors and the moral violations committed by the family members of Korean Air. The public attached derogatory remarks to Cho and her family, and the comments also addressed ethical concerns, management issues of the company, and boycott intentions. The results imply that adverse public reaction was related to the long-standing problem caused by family ownership and governance in large Korean corporations. This Korean Air scandal illustrates backlash toward a leadership breakdown by the family business conglomerate prevalent in the Korean society. This study provides insights for effective handling of similar crises.

In this study, there were three circumstances in which children need to stay alone without being interrupted by their parents; First, they strongly want to be stay quiet until relieving their anger or fear, shortly after disciplined and impugned by their parents. Second, infant children need to obtain their own territory in order to demonstrate ownership and dignity in their sley space. Third, there are also special circumstances of privacy needs among families with intrusive parents such as alcoholics and heavy smokers, or for the children of disability. In Korea, it is presumed that more than 60 percent the pre-school children aging three to six are in deficit of privacy for relieving their emotional disturbance, but no research has been documented for the case of disabled or interrupted children. Therefore in this study, it was primarily proposed that empirical studies need to be peformed among Korean preschoolers, in order to evaluate privacy needs in the perspectives of ordinary family lives, individual household behaviors, and special conditions of disability or offensive family members.

  • The rate of automobile ownerships has been increased significantly in multi-family housing sites so that government has made new parking regulations increasing the rate of parking supply by the high demand of parking lots in multi-family housing sites. However, the new regulation of parking supply has several problems that it applies to only new multi-family housing sites and disregards to the locational distinctions around the sites. It also has reduced to the open spaces in the sites and increased the price of housing units especially to the small size units of multi-family housing sites by increasing the number of underground parking lots. Furthermore, the residents have not been equal opportunity to access their parking lots even though they have been charged to equal amount of financial burden for the construction of underground parking lots. This research aims to relieve above problems by analysing parking supply and demand management strategies both domestic and foreign countries, and suggest to new parking management system for multi-family housing sites in 21st Centuries. This research reveals that most of multi-family housing sites want to be applied 1) diverse parking supply regulations considering the locational distinctions of sites, 2) parking lot ownership programs, 3) charging parking fees to second vehicles, 4) increasing parking lots both in the sites and around the sites, 5) enforcing police power to the parking violation vehicles to their sites. Especially, the multi-family housing sites consisting of small & medium size of units and locating in small & medium size of cites strongly want to be accepted new Parking regulations considered their locational and social distinctions and applied police power to the parking violation vehicles in their sites compared to the other multi-family housing sites.
