It is well known that the family-mold has an advantage to reduce the cost for production and mold. However, defects are frequently occurred by over packing the smaller volume cavity during molding, especially when the family-mold has a volumetric difference between two cavities. In this study, the cavity-filling imbalance was confirmed by the temperature and the pressure sensors, and a variable-runner system was developed for balancing the cavity-filling. Experiments of balancing the cavity filling was carried out in the family-mold with the variable-runner system, and balancing the cavity-filling was confirmed by changing the cross-sectional area of a runner in the variable-runner system with the temperature and pressure sensors. The influence of the injection speed to the balancing-capability of the variable-runner system was also examined in the experiment.

In this study, we confirmed the cavity-filling imbalance by the temperature and the pressure sensors, and developed a variable-runner system for the cavity-filling balance. We carried out experiments fur balancing the cavity filling in the family-mold with the variable-runner system, and confirmed a balanced cavity-filing through analyzing the temperature and pressure change in each cavity as the cross-sectional area of the runner changed. We also examined the influence of the injection-speed to the balancing-capability of the variable-runner system in the experiment.

Cavity pressure is a factor of what is occurring inside the mold and is used as one of the process parameters that control the overall injection molding cycle. The insight of cavity pressure is able to predict part quality and optimum process condition. In this paper, it is adapted ejector pin sensor to measure the cavity pressure and investigates the flow balance and the cavity pressure according to different runner thickness for adjusting the flow balance. Flow balance is very important to have not the poor results such as flash and warpage in the family mold. This paper predicted flow balance and cavity pressure using CAE analysis tool and compared with the test results. The results of analysis and test have a good agreement with the cavity pressure profile and flow pattern of the test.

Injection molding industries realize the necessity of developing family molds to improve competitiveness. One of the primary causes of manufacturing defective products is the imbalance of flow in a family mold. In this study, the family mold of a shelf for refrigerators is analyzed by using CAE software. First, the flow balance, clamping force, and injection pressure are analyzed for different gate diameters of two cavities. Second, the flow balance, clamping force, and injection pressure are improved when the two gate valves are open at different times. Finally, the results of filling analysis are compared with the test injection product.
The family mold casting have advantages which are able to make products with different shapes and dimensions simultaneously in a single mold. In this study, the design of the 4 cavity rotor family mold was used by "Anycasting" software, the defects occurred during die casting were predicted and suggested the best optimization conditions for sound products. The result of the experiment were that the optimum overflow design was needed for gas emission and control of residual oxides. It was clear that the defects positions formed by diecasting were agreed with nearly them predicted by simulation.

In family mold, defects are frequently occurred by an excessive packing the smaller volume cavity during molding. Although runner size could be optimized by CAE analysis or experimental data, the filling imbalance is hardly avoided in the actual injection molding process by various means. Before this study, we developed a variable-runner system for balancing the cavity-filling for three resins (ABS, LDPE, and PA66) in the family-mold, and examined the effect of cross-sectional area reduction of a runner in the system. In this study, we examined the conditions of the pressure and temperature in the system with a CAE analysis. We also analyzed the influence of the rheological characteristic of resins to the balancing-capability of the system in order to help mold designers easily adopt the variable-runner system to their design.

In the present study, the characteristic of warpage and flow balance for family mould, which is able to mold parts with different shapes in a mold, is considered. To obtain an optimal gate and runner system, plastic injection molding analysis with commercial code is performed. Design and manufacturing of family mould is then carried out on the basis of this computer aided engineering result. Flow balance and warpage comparisons between experiment and numerical analysis give good agreement with each other. However, it was shown that results of warpage measured by CMM was about $20\~55\%$ lower than those of numerical analysis.

Automated design system of injection mold was developed in this study. Shapes of mold parts and mold base were defined according to standards of mold components and database modules of mold components were built. And then an automation program of mold design was developed by the user definition features, family table and Pro/Program of Pro/Engineer. The automatic production divided into mold base and standard parts was manipulated to manufacture parts meeting the design requirements and the selected parts were changed in size and shape to meet the design goals. The mold design was also carried out to have organic relations and be easy in case of a change to the mold part or mold base. As a result, it is possible to design the mold efficiently and conveniently modify the designed mold parts and base by using the developed automated design system in this study.

Family injection molding of plastic is widely used to enhance productivity. Runners for molded products in fami-ly injection molding have to be balanced so that each of the producs is filled completely at the same time,. In this study computer simulations were performed to determine balanced circular section runners in family injection molding with two cavities where each of he cavity shapes is like a case. It was found from the computer simula-tions that runner balance could be fulfilled only by modifying runner diameters. But in order to get more quality molded products other process factors such as flow length flow resistance shapes of products and etc, should be taken in to consideration for the design of a family injection molding process.
