  • The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Korea Family Strengths Scale II (KFSS-II) which was modified and developed by Yoo(2004). For this purpose, the preliminary scale of family strengths which was based on Yoo(2004)'s sample survey that targeted 494 adults who live in Korea consisted of 30 items. Exploratory factor analysis of 29 items extracted 5 factors. It included the 5 dimensional constructs of family resilience, valuing each other & acceptance, qualitative bonding, economic stability and cooperation and caring about community. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the stepwise 5-factor model of 22 items considering family strengths. These results indicated that the simple template of Family Strengths Scale would be a concise and reliable tool for assessing and evaluating a family's strengths.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the differences of stress according to general characteristics and find stress related factors to reduce stress level of family caregivers for demented elderly. Subjects were 72 family caregivers for demented elderly in Seoul and Gyunggi province. Stress were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test and multiple regression according to gender, age, residence, marital status, number of family members, number of children, religion, education level, occupation, monthly income, relation with the demented elderly, caring years of the demented elderly and symptom of family caregivers for demented elderly. The results were as follows. First, the stress of family caregivers for demented elderly were significantly high in number of family members who live alone with demented elderly, education level with elementary school or below, monthly income with below 2,000,000 won, and the ones who have symptom by taking care of demented elderly. Second, stress related factors of family caregivers for the demented elderly were women, age between 60-69, number of family members that live alone with demented elderly, education level with elementary school or below, monthly income with between 1,000,000 - below 2,990,000 won, daughter-in-law and son of demented elderly. The family who live alone with demented elderly, family with low education level and low monthly income were important variables of family caregivers' stress for the demented elderly. Therefore it is assumed that support for family who living alone with demented elderly, family with low education level and low monthly income can reduce the stress of family caregivers for the demented elderly.

  • This study was conducted to determine family factors related to obesity of high school students. A descriptive correlational study was conducted with 384 high school students in I metropolitan city. Data were collected from February to April of 2015 using self-report structured questionnaires. Questionnaires included weight, height, individual characteristics of subjects and their familial characteristics. Collected data were analyzed by multiple logistic regression. Logistic regression analysis revealed that male gender (aOR = 4.37; 95% CI [1.26, 15.16]), having a non-regular paternal job (aOR = 3.10; 95% CI [1.15, 8.40]), and not being in a two parent family (aOR = 3.52; 95% CI [1.29, 9.61]) were statistically significant contributors to obesity. These results indicate that it is necessary to improve social awareness regarding the obesity risk of male adolescents. Health care providers should recognize the importance of family factors such as parental socioeconomic status and family structures.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence, severity or impact of symptoms in hemodialysis patients and its relationship with self efficacy and family support to identify factors influencing their symptoms. A cross-sectional design was used and the subjects were 243 patients undergoing hemodialysis at local units. The patients were Dialysis Symptom Index (DSI), a questionnaire about the presence and severity of symptoms. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, Pearson coefficient correlation and multiple regression. There were significant differences in the total score of symptoms according to age and duration of hemodialysis. Symptoms score had significant negative correlations with family support (r=-.35, p<.001) and self-efficacy (r=-.16, p=.006). Family support explained 16.0% of the variance in symptoms score. Hemodialysis patients experience many distressing symptoms, which have negative effects on quality of their life. Promoting family support can help to reduce and control distressing symptoms in hemodialysis patients.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the burden and quality of life among family caregivers of terminal cancer patients and the relationship of these variables. Methods: Data were collected from 80 family caregivers and analyzed using SPSS 19.0 program. Results: Burden was found to have significant relationships with age, marriage, relations with patients, living together with patients and medical expense burden(p<.05). Quality of life was found to have significant differences according to age, marriage, educational background, relations with patients and living together with patients(p<.05). Burden and quality of life showed a negative correlation(r=-.538, p<.001). Conclusion: These results suggest that more attentions and interventions such as support programs should be given to family caregivers of terminal cancer patients, which can decrease the burden of family caregivers to enhance their quality of life.

  • In this paper, we examine the impact of family ownership mechanism on the firm's debt policy. Our results show that family firms tend to have a lower debt level, compared with non-family firms. Foreign investors are found to lead to a reduction in the firm's debt level through their monitoring incentives for dominating large shareholders. The firm's profitablily is related to a lower level of debt, whereas higher tangible assets and firm size are positively associated with high debt ratios due to the possibility of large collateral assets. Some implications are that foreign investors can reduce the agency costs of dominating large shareholders in family firms through monitoring activities, thus enhancing the efficiency of business decision-makings.
