In this paper, we propose a detection method for Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Plus suitable for hybrid mode broadcasting which services both DRM Plus and analog FM within the same frequency band. The guard-interval correlation method of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is good for DRM Plus signal detection, but the possibility for false alarm increases when FM signal is received. The proposed method includes a reference block in the guard-interval correlation which increases the identification rate of weak DRM Plus signals and decreases the possibility of false alarm when analog FM is received. The performance of the proposed method is verified through simulations.

Using ground moving target indicators equipped with synthetic aperture radars for locating moving targets within a wide background clutter in a short time is an excellent method for monitoring traffic. Although the displaced phase center antenna (DPCA) technique and along track interferometry (ATI) are real time methods with low computational complexity, they are essential for reducing cases of false alarm that can result in poor performance. In this paper, we propose two detection methods using DPCA and ATI-the parallel fusion method and serial fusion method. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed detection methods are characterized by low probability of false alarm along with good performance. In particular, the serial fusion method possesses high detection probability along with low probability of false alarm (1/5th of the false alarm probability of the DPCA technique).
In this study, the target detection using both high-resolution satellite SAR and Elecro-Optical (EO) images such as TerraSAR-X and WorldView-2 is performed, considering the characteristics of targets. The targets of our interest are featured by being stationary and appearing as cluster targets. After the target detection of SAR image by using Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) algorithm, a series of processes is performed in order to reduce false alarms, including pixel clustering, network clustering and coherence analysis. We extend further our algorithm by adopting the fast and effective ellipse detection in EO image using randomized hough transform, which is significantly reducing the number of false alarms. The performance of proposed algorithm has been tested and analyzed on TerraSAR-X SAR and WordView-2 EO images. As a result, the average false alarm for group of targets is 1.8 groups/$64km^2$ and the false alarms of single target range from 0.03 to 0.3 targets/$km^2$. The results show that groups of targets are successfully identified with very low false alarms.
Misuse IDS is known to have an acceptable accuracy but suffers from high rates of false alarms. We show a behavior based alarm reduction with a memory-based machine learning technique. Our extended form of IBL, (XIBL) examines SNORT alarm signals if that signal is worthy sending signals to security manager. An experiment shows that there exists an apparent difference between true alarms and false alarms with respect to XIBL behavior This gives clear evidence that although an attack in the network consists of a sequence of packets, decisions over Individual packet can be used in conjunction with misuse IDS for better performance.
Detecting remote targets is important to active protection system (APS) or infrared search and track (IRST) applications. In normal situation, the well-known constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector works properly. However, decoys in APS or closely spaced targets in IRST degrade the detection capability by increasing background noise level in the CFAR detector. This paper presents a context aware CFAR detector by the intensity sorting and selection of background region to reduce the effect of neighboring targets that lead to incorrect estimation of background statistics. The existence of neighboring targets can be recognized by intensity sorting where neighboring targets usually show highest ranks. The proposed background statistics (mean, standard deviation) estimation method from median local pixels can be aware of the background context and reduce the effects of the neighboring targets, which increase the signal-to-clutter ratio. The experimental results on the synthetic APS sequence, real adjacent target sequence, and remote pedestrian sequence validated that the proposed method produced an enhanced detection rate with the same false alarm rate compared with the hysteresis-CFAR (H-CFAR) detection.
In this paper, performance of IEEE 802.11 carrier-sense multiple access with collision-avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocols in saturated traffic conditions is presented taking into account the impact of imperfect channel sensing. The imperfect channel sensing includes both missed-detection and false alarm and their impact on the performance of IEEE 802.11 is analyzed and expressed as a closed form. To include the imperfect channel sensing at the physical layer, we modified the state transition probabilities of well-known two state Markov process model. Simulation results closely match the theoretical expressions confirming the effectiveness of the proposed model. Based on both theoretical and simulated results, the probability of detection is concluded as a dominant factor for the performance of IEEE 802.11.
The theory of signal detection has been applied to a wide range of practical situation for a long time, including sonar detection, air traffic control and so on. In general, in this theory, sensitivity parametric index d' and bias parametric index $\beta$ are used to evaluated the performance of vigilance. These indices use observer's response "hit" and "false alarm" to explain and evaluate vigilance, but not considering reaction time. However, the reaction time of detecting should be considered in measuring vigilance in some supervisory tasks such as unlimited monitoring tasks (e.g., supervisors in nuclear plant). There are some researchers have used the segments of reaction time to generate a pair of probabilities of hit and false alarm probabilities and plot the receiver operating characteristic curve. The purpose of this study was to develop a quantitative vigilance-measuring model by fuzzy sets, which combined the concepts of hit, false alarm and reaction time. The model extends two-values logic to multi-values logic by membership functions of fuzzy sets. A simulated experiment of monitoring task in nuclear plant was carried out. Results indicated that the new vigilance-measuring model is more efficient than traditional indices; the characteristics of vigilance would be realized more clearly in unlimited monitoring task.

In this paper, we analyzed performance of FFT based on pilot sensing scheme for DTV signal in fading environments. In order to detect the present and absent for advanced television system committee digital television (ATSC DTV), a pilot detection scheme based on FFT is employed. Also, these signals are applied to each fading environment. For evaluating the spectrum sensing performance, detection probability is derived. When threshold is decided, we refer to constant false alarm rate (CFAR) scheme. From simulation results, it is confirmed that the spectrum sensing performance is improved as increase of the false alarm rate. The result of this paper can be applied to implement the spectrum sensing part of cognitive radio (CR) systems.

Reed-Solomon code, block interleaving and SI (side information) are frequently used in SFH (slow frequency hopping) system. Erasing those symbols in the hit frequency slot greatly increases the error connection capacity. Packet error rate has been the major performance measure for SFH system. The analysis of BER has been limited to the case of perfect Sl, in which neither miss nor false alarm exists. BER with imperfect Sl has been obtained only by Monte Carlo simulation. In this paper, we present a unified solution to estimate BER with imperfect Sl. It is shown that previous formulae for packet error rate or BER with perfect Sl are special cases in the proposed solution. The computed BER with false alarm and miss of frequency hit is verified by comparing with the simulation result.

In this paper, we compare the robustness to the assumption of normality of the single control charts to control the mean and variance simultaneously. The charts examined were semicircle control chart, max chart and MSE chart with Shewhart individuals control charts. Their in-control and out-of-control performance were studied by simulation combined with computation. We calculated false alarm rate to compare among single charts by changing subgroup size and shifting mean of quality characteristics. It turns out that max chart is more robust than any of the others if the process is in-control. In some cases max chart and MSE chart are more robust than others if the process is out-of-control.
