This paper investigates the asymmetric costs of false errors to enhance the detection systems performance. The proposed method utilizes the network model to consider the cost ratio of false errors. By comparing false positive errors with false negative errors this scheme achieved better performance on the view point of both security and system performance objectives. The results of our empirical experiment show that the network model provides high accuracy in detection. In addition, the simulation results show that effectiveness of probe detection is enhanced by considering the costs of false errors.

Advanced computer network technology enables computers to be connected in an open network environment. Despite the growing numbers of security threats to networks, most intrusion detection identifies security attacks mainly by detecting misuse using a set of rules based on past hacking patterns. This pattern matching has a high rate of false positives and can not detect new hacking patterns, which makes it vulnerable to previously unidentified attack patterns and variations in attack and increases false negatives. Intrusion detection and analysis technologies are thus required. This paper investigates the asymmetric costs of false errors to enhance the performances the detection systems. The proposed method utilizes the network model to consider the cost ratio of false errors. By comparing false positive errors with false negative errors, this scheme achieved better performance on the view point of both security and system performance objectives. The results of our empirical experiment show that the network model provides high accuracy in detection. In addition, the simulation results show that effectiveness of anomaly traffic detection is enhanced by considering the costs of false errors.
This study investigates the application of data mining techniques such as artificial neural networks, rough sets, and induction teaming to the intrusion detection systems. To maximize the effectiveness of data mining for intrusion detection systems, we introduced the asymmetric costs with false positive errors and false negative errors. And we present a method for intrusion detection systems to utilize the asymmetric costs of errors in data mining. The results of our empirical experiment show our intrusion detection model provides high accuracy in intrusion detection. In addition the approach using the asymmetric costs of errors in rough sets and neural networks is effective according to the change of threshold value. We found the threshold has most important role of intrusion detection model for decreasing the costs, which result from false negative errors.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the design optimization modeling of screening procedures based on the assessment of misclassification errors. Methods: Misclassification errors due to measurement variability are derived for normally distributed quality characteristics. Further, an optimization model for ensuring the level of outgoing quality is proposed and demonstrated through an illustrative example. Results: It is shown that two types of misclassification errors (i.e., false acceptance and false rejection) may be properly compromised through an analytical assessment of measurement errors and an optimization modeling. It is also discussed that a variety of optimization modeling may be enabled based on the derivation of measurement errors. Conclusion: It may be concluded that the design of screening inspection may further be facilitated by including the effect of measurement errors on the performance of screening inspection procedure.
Generally, algorithms for generating disparity maps can be clssified into two categories: region-based method and feature-based method. The main focus of this research is to generate a disparity map with an accuracy depth information for 3-dimensional reconstructing. Basically, the region-based method and the feature-based method are simultaneously included in the proposed algorithm, so that the existing problems including false matching and occlusion can be effectively solved. As a region-based method, regions of false matching are extracted by the proposed MMAD(Modified Mean of Absolute Differences) algorithm which is a modification of the existing MAD(Mean of Absolute Differences) algorithm. As a feature-based method, the proposed method eliminates false matching errors by calculating the vector with SIFT and compensates the occluded regions by using a pair of adjacent SIFT matching points, so that the errors are reduced and the disparity map becomes more accurate.

This study evaluates the accuracy of corrective feedback from Grammarly, an online grammar checker, on essays written by cyber university learners in terms of detected errors, suggested replacement forms, and false alarms. The results indicate that Grammarly has a high overall error detection rate of over 65%, being particularly strong at catching errors related to articles and prepositions. In addition, on the detected errors, Grammarly mostly provide accurate replacement forms and very rarely make false alarms. These findings suggest that Grammarly has high potential as a useful educational tool to complement the drawbacks of teacher feedback and to help learnersimprove grammatical accuracy in their written work. However, it is still premature to conclude that Grammarly can completely replace teacher feedback because it has the possibility (approximately 35%) of failing to detect errors and the limitationsin detecting errors in certain categories. Since the feedback from Grammarly is not entirely reliable, caution should be taken for successful integration of Grammarly in English writing classes. Teachers should make judicious decisions on when and how to use Grammarly, based on a keen awareness of Grammarly's strengths and limitations.
This paper proposes a unique shot boundary detection algorithm for the video indexing and/or browsing. Conventional methods based on the frame differences and the histogram differences are improved. Instead of using absolute frame differences, block by block based relative frame differences are employed. Frame adaptive thresholding values are also employed for the better detection. for the cases that the frame differences are not enough to detect the shot boundary, histogram differences are selectively applied. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces both the “false positive” errors and the “false negative” errors especially for the videos of dynamic local and/or global motions
This study was conducted to identify the characteristics of analytical errors shown in the Korean quality control program on bulk asbestos analyses using polarized light microscopy (PLM). 179 participating laboratories were required to analyze 4 samples respectively and asked to classify each test sample as asbestos-containing (positive) or non-asbestos-containing (negative). For positive samples, participants were also asked to identify the type and semiquantitate the contents of asbestos present. The test results showed 21 (4%) false negative errors among 562 samples, 9 (6%) false positive errors among 154 samples and 53 (9%) asbestos identification errors among 562 samples. Most of false negative and positive errors were observed in a few types of samples. Higher frequencies of asbestos identification errors were shown in samples containing two or more types of asbestos and samples containing anthophyllite, tremolite or actinolite asbestos. For semiquantitative analyses, the ratios of mean to nominal weight contents were 2.1 for chrysotile and 2.9 for amphiboles. A tendency of over-estimation was observed in semiquantitative analyses using the visual estimation technique and higher in case of analyzing samples containing amphiboles than chrysotile. Coefficients of variation (CVs) of semiquantitative analytical results were 0.44~0.83 and 0.5~1.14 for samples containing chrysotile and amphibole asbestos, respectively.
We analyze the effect of main inertial sensor errors such as, misalignment, scale factor error and bias on the performance of modified sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) for sequential fault detection and isolation (FDI). The inertial sensor errors cause the modified SPRT method to give false alarm. We use a two-stage KF to obtain a modified parity vector with which the inertial sensor errors can be removed and thus modified SPRT method can be used regardless of inertial sensor errors.
