  • The objective of this study is to develope the reliability prediction model for Float Rated Integrating Gyroscope( :FRIG) at maximum loading. The equation of motion for FRIG is firstly derived to set up the reliability prediction model. To analysis reliability or all parts of the gyro is not easy due to their complicated structure. Therefore the failure parts are chosen by Failure Mode Effective Analysis (:FMEA). F.E.M is utilized to calculate loads for the selseced rotating assembly and pivot / jewel. The technical reliability is calculated by applying reliability design theory with these results and the performance reliability is sought through distribution estimation with error test data. The bulk reliability of gyroscope is sought by applying the two results. The present prediction results are compared with the accumulation time in good agreement.

  • Battery Disconnecting System (BDS) is the important equipment in electric vehicle system. Therefore, most of electric vehicle companies, i.e. Hyundai Motors, Renault Motors, General Motors, want to have the reliability of 15 years - 150, 000 miles. Recently, reliability prediction through Siemens Norm SN 29500 is considered without testing. In this paper, we will introduce the standard and various input parameters. Also the case study will be shown for BDS. Prediction model is constructed by listing all the components of BDS. It calculates the $\pi$ factors for each components using the conversion equation in the standard and converts the reference failure rates to the expected operating failure rates. According to the result, the parts which will be improved are EV-Relays.

  • Rapid Prototyping (RP) technologies provide the ability to fabricate initial prototypes from various model materials. Stratasys' Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a typical RP process that can fabricate prototypes out of plastic materials, and the parts made from FDM were often used as load-carrying elements. Because FDM deposits materials in about $300\mutextrm{m}$ thin filament with designated orientation, parts made from FDM show anisotropic material properties. This paper proposes an analytic model to predict the tensile strength of FDM parts. Applying the Classical Lamination Theory, which was developed for laminated composite materials, a computer code was implemented. Tsai-Wu failure criterion was added to the code to predict the failure of the FDM parts. The tensile strengths predicted by the analytic model were compared with experimental data. The data and prediction agreed reasonably well to prove the validity of the model. In addition, a web-based advisory service was developed to provide to strength prediction and design rules for FDM parts.

  • To predict busting failure in tubular hydroforming, the criteria for ductile fracture proposed by Oyane is combined with the finite element method. From the histories of stress and strain in each element obtained from finite element analysis, the fracture initiation site is predicted by mean of the criterion. The prediction by the ductile fracture criterion is applied to three hydroforming processes such as a tee extrusion, an automobile rear axle housing and lower am. For these products, the ductile fracture integral I is not only affected by the process parameters, but also by preforming processes. All the simulation results show the combination of the finite element analysis and the ductile fracture criteria is useful in the prediction of farming limit in hydroforming processes.

  • This paper presents the result of a feasibility study for the prediction method of fault symptoms on 22.9kV distribution line. In this paper, real distribution data was collected and analyzed to isolate failure signatures or parameters which were distinct behaviors before and after failure incident. A new strategy of analysis-based (event-date concept) prediction algorithm for the distribution insulators and a developed model system were also discussed.

  • This paper predicted the equivalent stiffness of spatially reinforced composites (SRC) using the volume average of a fiber rod and matrix stiffness, and the strength of SRC using the stiffness reduction and the modified Tsai-Wu composite failure theory. Those equivalent engineering constants are used to analyze the mechanical behavior and the failure of SRC structures. Because the distribution of equivalent engineering constants is varying with the change in SRC shape, we made a program that predicts engineering constants of SRC. Both 3-D and 4-D SRC show the smallest tensile modulus and the largest shear modulus at the maximum rotated direction from each rod. Also the strength properties show the same tendency.

  • In this study, the failure prediction of composite laminates under flexural loading is investigated. A FEA(finite element analysis) using 2D strain-based interactive failure theory. A pregressive failure analysis was applied to FEA for stiffness degradation with failure mode each layer. A three-point bending test based on the ASTM D790 are performed for cross-ply $[0/90]_8$ and quasi-isotropic $[0/{\pm}45/90]_{2s}$ laminated composites. The accuracy of the applied failure theory is verified with the experimental results and other failure criteria such as maximum strain, maximum stress and Tsai-Wu theories.

  • This paper presents the effect of external corrosion, material properties, operation condition and design thickness in pipeline on failure prediction using a failure probability model. The predicted failure assessment for the simulated corrosion defects discovered in corroded pipeline is compared with that determined by ANSI/ASME B31G code and a modified B31G method. The effects of environmental, operational, and random design variables such as defect depth, pipe diameter, defect length, fluid pressure, corrosion rate, material yield stress and pipe thickness on the failure probability are systematically studied using a failure probability model for the corrosion pipeline.

  • A two-dimensional progressive failure analysis method is presented for the strength characterization of the composite joints under pin loading. The eight-nodes laminated she]1 element is utilized based on the updated Lagrangian formulation. The criteria by Yamada-Sun, Tsai-Wu, and the maximum stress are used for the failure estimation. The stiffness of failed layer is degraded by the complete unloading method. No factor depending on test is included in the finite element analysis except for the material strength and stiffness. Total 20 plate specimens with and without hole are tested to validate the finite element prediction. The Tsai-Wu failure criterion most conservatively estimates the strength of laminate, and the maximum stress criterion yields the highest strength because it does not consider the coupling of the failure modes. The strength by Yamada-Sun method neglecting the matrix failure effect are located between other two methods and shows best agreement with test result for laminate with hole.
