Prior to the introduction of modern seismic guidelines, it was a common practice to provide straight bar anchorage for beam bottom reinforcement of gravity load designed building. Exterior joints with straight bar anchorages for beam bottom reinforcements are susceptible to sudden anchorage failure under load reversals and hence require systematic seismic upgradation. Hence in the present study, an attempt is made to upgrade exterior beam-column sub-assemblage of a three storied gravity load designed (GLD) building with single steel haunch. Analytical formulations are presented for evaluating the haunch forces in single steel haunch retrofit. Influence of parameters that affect the efficacy and effectiveness of the single haunch retrofit are also discussed. The effectiveness of the single haunch retrofit for enhancing seismic performance of GLD beam-column specimen is evaluated through experimental investigation under reverse cyclic loading. The single steel haunch retrofit had succeeded in preventing the anchorage failure of beam bottom bars of GLD specimen, delaying the joint shear damage and partially directing the damage towards the beam. A remarkable improvement in the load carrying capacity of the upgraded GLD beam-column sub-assemblage is observed. Further, a tremendous improvement in the energy dissipation of about 2.63 times that of GLD specimen is observed in the case of upgraded GLD specimen. The study also underlines the efficacy of single steel haunch retrofit for seismic upgradation of deficient GLD structures.
For quantitative evaluation of wooden structures, the mechanical performance of members has undergone outdoor exposure tests. A year-long monitoring was conducted using an SPF species. Test groups were divided into twelve (each month) to measure the moisture content, density and ultimate load. Starting from May when moisture content of the test group was at the lowest, simple failure modes were observed more frequently during the first half of the experiment, whereas complex failure modes took over during the second half. Starting from June when moisture content of the test group was the highest, ultimate load decreased by 30% in the second half compared to the first half. A multiple regression analysis confirmed that moisture content of the test group was the variable with most effect on ultimate load of various outdoor variables, and an estimation equation of a simple regression analysis revealed that moisture content and ultimate load formed an inversely proportionate relationship. It is thought that correlational relationships of variables other than moisture content could be applied with the increase in added data amount by longer periods of outdoor exposure tests.
In order to study the fatigue performance of the flat steel plate-lightweight aggregate concrete hollow composite bridge slab subjected to fatigue load, both static test on two specimens and fatigue test on six specimens were conducted. The effects of the arrangement of the steel pipes, the amplitude of the fatigue load and the upper limit as well as lower limit of fatigue load on failure performance were investigated. Besides, for specimens in fatigue test, strains of the concrete, residual deflection, bending stiffness, residual bearing capacity and dynamic response were analyzed. Test results showed that the specimens failed in the fracture of the bottom flat steel plate regardless of the arrangement of the steel pipes. Moreover, the fatigue loading cycles of composite slab were mainly controlled by the amplitude of the fatigue load, but the influences of upper limit and lower limit of fatigue load on fatigue life was slight. The fatigue life of the composite bridge slabs can be determined by the fatigue strength of bottom flat steel plate, which can be calculated by the method of allowable stress amplitude in steel structure design code.
Under constant and cyclic axial compression, square composite short columns reinforced with Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) added with scrap rubber infilled inside steel tubes and with different types of concrete were cast and tested. The test is carried out to find the effectiveness of utilizing an aggregate manufactured from industrial waste and to address the problems associated with the need for alternative reinforcements along with waste management. The main testing parameters are the type of concrete, the effect of fiber inclusion, and the significance of rubber-infilled steel tubes. The failure modes of the columns and axial load-displacement curves of the steel tube-reinforced columns were all thoroughly investigated. According to the test results, all specimens failed due to compression failure with a longitudinal crack along the loading axis. The fiber-reinforced column specimens demonstrated improved ductility and energy absorption. In comparison to the normal-weight concrete columns, the lightweight concrete columns significantly improved the axial load-carrying capacity. The addition of basalt fiber to the columns significantly increased the yield stress and ultimate stress to 9.21%. The corresponding displacement at yield load and ultimate load was reduced to 10.36% and 28.79%, respectively. The precision of volumetric information regarding the obtained crack quantification, aggregates, and the fiber in concrete is studied in detail through image processing using MATLAB environment.

This paper describes the effect of span-to-depth ratio, which describes aspect of cell formed with top diaphragm steel plate, on capacity in composite steel-concrete structure of sandwich system. The span-to-depth ratio \ulcorner load-carrying mechanism and load-distribution capacity of structure. Therefore, stress levels of members and load-resis\ulcorner of system vary according to span-depth ratio. In this study, numerical nonlinear analysis was performed to various ratio for two types(MA, MB) composite structure of sandwich system to analyze the influence of span-to-depth ratio or, behavior. The difference of load-carrying mechanism and stress of members results from analysis results, then bas\ulcorner differences, the effects of span-to-depth ratio on shear capacity, flexural capacity and load-resistance capacity were analyze effects on failure mode and ductility were briefly. As a results of this study, as span-to-depth ratio increases, \ulcorner bottom steel plate and concrete lower. This implies an increase in effective flexural and shear capacity. Therefore lo\ulcorner capacity of structure improves as span-to-depth ratio increases, Especially, the effect is greate in shear than flexural span-to-depth ratio increases, this difference between flexural and shear capacity may change failure mode and ductility. span-to-depth ratio increases capacity increases more than flexural capacity, we should expect that structural behavior mode gradually change from shear to flexural and ductility of structure gradually improves.
In this study, we performed model lateral load test for connected-type foundations of transmission tower with bar in clay, and proposed failure standard and measuring method to estimate ultimate lateral bearing capacity. For this study, we performed model lateral load tests in Iksan, Jeollabukdo and analyzed load-displacement characteristic of the model. We manufactured model foundation of transmission tower connected with bar and that considered a change of rigidity. We installed various measuring sensors to find general foundation behavior. From the test results, we measured, compared and analyzed load capacities, and then proposed failure standard to estimate bearing capacity for connecting type foundation.

Recently, the interest of precast concrete is increased for rapid construction in construction fields. Experimental study about the shear performance of the joint between hollow core slabs which have internal core to reduce their weight was performed. Main test variables were thickness of the topping concrete and existence of the wiremesh. Total 8 specimens including 4 in-plane shear and 4 out of plane shear were tested. Test results were analyzed in terms of cracking load, failure load, failure aspect, stiffness and ductility, and compared its design load to develop optimum design details. Test results indicated that the shear performance of the non-shrinkage mortar specimen was similar to that of 30mm thickness topping concrete specimen, and the effect of wiremesh reinforcement did not affect the failure load or stiffness of the specimens but the increase of ductility. And this paper presents the comparison results of the test results and design load to provide the optimum detail of the joint design between the hollow core slabs.
The occurrence of progressive collapse induced by the removal of the vertical load-bearing element in the structure, because of fire or earthquake, has been a significant challenge between structural engineers. Progressive collapse is defined as the complete failure or failure of a part of the structure, initiating with a local rupture in a part of the building and can threaten the stability of the structure. In the current study, the behavior of the structures equipped with a cylindrical friction damper, when the vertical load-bearing elements are eliminated, is considered in two cases: 1-The load-bearing element is removed under the gravity load, and 2-The load-bearing element is removed due to the earthquake lateral forces. In order to obtain a generalized result in the seismic case, 22 pair motions presented in FEMA p 695 are applied to the structures. The study has been conducted using the vertical push down analysis for the case (1), and the nonlinear time-history analysis for the second case using OpenSEES software for 5,10, and 15-story steel frames. Results indicate that, in the first case, the load coefficient, and accordingly the strength of the structure equipped with cylindrical friction dampers are increased considerably. Furthermore, the results from the second case demonstrate that the displacements, and consequently the forces imposed to the structure in the buildings equipped with the cylindrical friction damper substantially was reduced. An optimum slip load is defined in the friction dampers, which permits the damper to start its frictional damping from this threshold load. Therefore, the optimum slip load of the damper is calculated and discussed for both cases.

Spinal fixation systems provide surgical versatility, but the complexity of their design reduces their strength and fatigue resistance. There is no published data on the mechanical properties of such screws. Screws were assembled according to a vertebrectomy model for destructive mechanical testing. A group of two assemblies was tested in static compression. One group was applied to surface a grit blasting method and another group was applied to surface a bead blasting method. Modes of failure, yield, and ultimate strength, yield stiffness, and cycles to failure were determined for six assembles. Static compression 2% offset yield load ranges was from 327 to 419N. Fatigue loads were determined two levels, 37.5% and 50% of the average load from static compression ultimate load. An assembly of bead blasting treatment only achieved 5 million cycles at 37.5% level in compression bending.

The rolling wear behavior of SM55C is investigated under lubrication. This is a comparative tribological behavior of heat treatment effect for SM55C. Rolling wear test method is used for Ball-on-disk type. Specimens can be classified into two main groups: as-annealing and non-annealing. As result of wear behavior, flanking initial time of non-annealing specimen keep at retard but it have not under high normal load. One of the notable features of annealing specimen is steady flanking initial time for a normal load in this experiment. Failure mechanism of SM55C is due to the fatigue wear such like flanking, pitting etc.. Flanking leads to abruptly fracture of worn surface. Fracture mechanism has a connection with normal load and polishing direction of specimens.
