Seismic fragility evaluation of the base-isolated nuclear power plant piping system using the failure criterion based on stress-strain

  • In the design criterion for the nuclear power plant piping system, the limit state of the piping against an earthquake is assumed to be plastic collapse. The failure of a common piping system, however, means the leakage caused by the cracks. Therefore, for the seismic fragility analysis of a nuclear power plant, a method capable of quantitatively expressing the failure of an actual piping system is required. In this study, it was conducted to propose a quantitative failure criterion for piping system, which is required for the seismic fragility analysis of nuclear power plants against critical accidents. The in-plane cyclic loading test was conducted to propose a quantitative failure criterion for steel pipe elbows in the nuclear power plant piping system. Nonlinear analysis was conducted using a finite element model, and the results were compared with the test results to verify the effectiveness of the finite element model. The collapse load point derived from the experiment and analysis results and the damage index based on the stress-strain relationship were defined as failure criteria, and seismic fragility analysis was conducted for the piping system of the BNL (Brookhaven National Laboratory) - NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) benchmark model.

  • 본 연구에서는 강우의 침투에 따른 토사사면의 파괴에 대한 강우강도-지속시간의 강우기준을 평가하기 위하여 수치해석에 의한 파괴시간의 확률론적 해석 절차를 제안하였다. 취약도 곡선은 시간에 따른 강우의 침투해석 결과를 반영하며 지반의 역학적 특성의 불확실성을 고려한 MCS에 의한 확률론적 사면 안정해석의 결과로부터 강우강도-지속기간의 함수로 생성하였다. 확률론적 해석에서 한계상태함수를 계산하기 위하여 강우의 침투해석과 연동된 사면 안정해석을 수행하였다. 생성된 사면의 취약도 곡선들을 기반으로 확률론적 사면 파괴분포 분석을 수행하여 지반의 불확실성을 고려한 사면 파괴 유발 강우기준을 평가하였다. 제안된 사면 파괴분포 분석법은 강우의 침투로 인한 사면 파괴의 과정을 분석하고 사면 파괴가 발생할 수 있는 시간을 예측하는데 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.

Failure analysis of tubes under multiaxial proportional and non-proportional loading paths

  • The failure of a thin-walled tube was studied in this paper based on three failure models. Both proportional and non-proportional loading paths were applied. Proportional loading consisted of combined tension-torsion. Cyclic non-proportional loading was also applied. It was a circular out-of-phase axial-shear stress loading path. The third loading path was a combination of a constant internal pressure and a bending moment. The failure models under study were equivalent plastic strain, modified Mohr-Coulomb (Bai-Wierzbicki) and Tearing parameter models. The elasto-plastic analysis was conducted using J2 criterion and nonlinear kinematic hardening. The return mapping algorithm was employed to numerically solve the plastic flow relations. The effects of the hydrostatic stress on the plastic flow and the stress triaxiality parameter on the failure were discussed. Each failure model under study was utilized to predict failure. The failure loads obtained from each model were compared with each other. The equivalent plastic strain model was independent from the stress triaxiality parameter, and it predicted the highest failure load in the bending problem. The modified Mohr-Coulomb failure model predicted the lowest failure load for the range of the stress triaxiality parameter and Lode's angle.

  • 본 논문은 공용년수가 오래되어 노후화된 철근콘크리트 교량의 파괴가지의 거동에 예측하기 위한 비선형 파괴해석 모델링 기법이 개발에 관한 연구이다. 본 논문에서는 비선형파괴해석을 위해철근부식으로 인하여 철근주변 콘크리트의 열화를 고려한 인장경화모델을 제안하였으며 교량의 노후화된 지점조건을 고려할 수 있는 지점 모델링 기법을 제안하였다. 제안된 모델을 사용하여 반복하중을 받는 노후화된 철근콘크리트 T형 교량이 파괴될 때까지의 2차원 및 3차원 파괴해석을 수행하였으며 파괴시험으로부터 분석된 교량의 파괴거동과 비교하였다. 해석결과와 실험결과의 비교로부터 본 논문의 모델링기법이 노후화된 교량의 파괴해석에 유용하게 사용될 수 있으며 노후화된 지점조건의 모델링이 교량의 강도평가에 매우 큰 영향을 주는 것을 규명하였다.

국외 천연가스 배관 사고 빈도 비교 및 분석 모형에 관한 연구 (A Study on Failure Frequency Model for Risk Analysis of Natural Gas Pipeline with Comparison of Overseas Failure Data)

  • 본 연구에서는 국내 매설 고압가스배관의 사고빈도 데이터 구축 시 활용할 수 있도록 국외에서 발표하고 있는 고압가스배관 사고빈도 데이터에 대해 고찰 하였다. 고압가스배관 사고빈도 데이터의 대표적인 것으로는 미국의 DOT, 유럽의 EGIG 및 영국의 UKOPA가 있다. 국외 사고빈도 데이터의 국내 적용 가능성을 확인하기 위하여 이들을 비교 분석한 결과 EGIG 데이터가 국내 실정에 더 적합하였다. EGIG 8차 보고서의 사고빈도 데이터를 사용하여 비선형회귀분석을 수행한 결과 배관 설치 연도에 따른 지수형의 곡선을 얻었다. 향후 전체 사고빈도의 약 50%를 차지하고 있는 타공사 부분과 국내 데이터와 국외 데이터의 합성에 대한 집중적인 연구가 필요하다.

Surge Tank가 설치된 상수도관망에서 부정류를 고려한 불능확률 산정 (Calculation of Probability of System Failure for Pipe Network with Surge Tank regarding Unsteady Flow)

  • In the present study, a reliability analysis calculating the probability of system failure has been performed using cut set and results of numerical analysis for unsteady flow in pipe. Especially, the probability of system failure has been evaluated regarding the effect of valve closure which is a really important activity in operation of piping system. In spite of small amount of demand, it was found that fast valve closure can generate high probability of system failure. Furthermore, it was confirmed that surge tank can reduce the unsteady effects and probability of system failure in water distribution system. From the results, it was found that the unsteady flow has a significant effect on the probability of system failure Furthermore, it was able to find which pipe or cut set has high probability of system failure. So it could be used to determine which pipe or cut set has a priority of repair and replacement. Therefore, reliability analysis regarding unsteady flow has to be performed for the planning, designing, maintenance, and operation of piping system.

FLB Event Analysis with regard to the Fuel Failure

  • Detailed analysis of Feedwater Line Break (FLB) event for the fuel failure point of view are lack because the event was characterized as the increase in reactor coolant system (RCS) pressure. Up to now, the potential of the rapid system heatup case has been emphasized and comprehensively studied. The cooldown effects of FLB event is considered to be bounded by the Steam Line Break (SLB) event since the cooldown effect of SLB event is larger than that of the FLB event. This analysis provides a new possible path which can cause the fuel failure. The new path means that the fuel failure can occur under the heatup scenario because the Pressurizer Safety Valves (PSVs) open before the reactor trips. The 1000 MWe typical C-E plant FLB event assuming Loss of Offsite Power (LOOP) at the turbine trip has been analyzed as an example and the results show less than 1% of the fuel failure. The result is well within the acceptance criteria. In addition to that, a study was accomplished to prevent the fuel failure for the heatup scenario case as an example. It is found that giving the proper pressure gap between High Pressurizer Pressure Trip (HPPT) analysis setpoint and the minimum PSV opening pressure could prevent the fuel failure.

Failure Pressure Prediction of Composite Cylinders for Hydrogen Storage Using Thermo-mechanical Analysis and Neural Network

  • Safe installation and operation of high-pressure composite cylinders for hydrogen storage are of primary concern. It is unavoidable for the cylinders to experience temperature variation and significant thermal input during service. The maximum failure pressure that the cylinder can sustain is affected due to the dependence of composite material properties on temperature and complexity of cylinder design. Most of the analysis reported for high-pressure composite cylinders is based on simplifying assumptions and does not account for complexities like thermo-mechanical behavior and temperature dependent material properties. In the present work, a comprehensive finite element simulation tool for the design of hydrogen storage cylinder system is developed. The structural response of the cylinder is analyzed using laminated shell theory accounting for transverse shear deformation and geometric nonlinearity. A composite failure model is used to evaluate the failure pressure under various thermo-mechanical loadings. A back-propagation neural network (NNk) model is developed to predict the maximum failure pressure using the analysis results. The failure pressures predicted from NNk model are compared with those from test cases. The developed NNk model is capable of predicting the failure pressure for any given loading condition.

The Failure Mode and Effects Analysis Implementation for Laser Marking Process Improvement: A Case Study

  • Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a preventive technique in reliability management field. The successful implementation of FMEA technique can avoid or reduce the probability of system failure and achieve good product quality. The FMEA technique had applied in vest scopes which include aerospace, automatic, electronic, mechanic and service industry. The marking process is one of the back ends testing process that is the final process in semiconductor process. The marking process failure can cause bad final product quality and return although is not a primary process. So, how to improve the quality of marking process is one of important production job for semiconductor testing factory. This research firstly implements FMEA technique in laser marking process improvement on semiconductor testing factory and finds out which subsystem has priority failure risk. Secondly, a CCD position solution for priority failure risk subsystem is provided and evaluated. According analysis result, FMEA and CCD position implementation solution for laser marking process improvement can increase yield rate and reduce production cost. Implementation method of this research can provide semiconductor testing factory for reference in laser marking process improvement.

서비스 실패 관리를 위한 FMEA 이용 방안 (FMEA Measures for Service Failure Management)

  • Purpose: This study identifies preventive measures for VOC management by analyzing the causes and effects of factors that contribute to high risk service failure using FMEA on KORAIL VOC data. Methods: Two research methods were used. First, a Risk Priority Number (RPN) was assigned to each KORAIL VOC based on Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA). Second, multiple regression analysis was run with RPN factors that include severity, occurrence, and detection as the independent variables and customer dissatisfaction as the dependent variable. Results: Multiple regression analysis showed that RPN factors including severity, occurrence, and detection had significantly positive relationship with customer dissatisfaction. Based on these results, an FMEA was performed on VOC categories with high RPN for railroad stations including platform, ticketing, ticket verification, parking, and escalator, and VOC categories with high RPN for trains including entrance doors, cafes, air quality, announcement, and ticket verification. Conclusion: This study has practical implications to service failure management. A priority order using FMEA was established for the list of customer dissatisfactions that should be addressed to actively manage service failure, and strategies for tackling this priority list are offered.
