This paper presents the results of an analytical and experimental study on the performance of reinforced concrete beams subjected to pure torsion. The main parameters of the experimental tests were amount of torsional reinforcement and the ratio of the transverse torsional reinforcement to the longitudinal torsional reinforcement. The test results indicated that the maximum amount of torsional reinforcement required in ACI 318-05 code underestimated almost twice as much as the observed maximum amount of torsional reinforcement. Comparisons between the tested and calculated torsional behaviors of the 102 beams showed that the torsional failure modes of ACI 318-05 code disagreed with the observed failure modes. In addition, the torsion provisions in ACI 318-05 code overestimate the torsional strength of the RC beams in which relatively large amount of torsional reinforcement were reinforced, while underestimate for the beams with small amount of torsional reinforcement. This discrepancy between the theoretical ultimate torsional strength as given by the ACI 318-05 code and the experimental one can be due to neglecting the tension stiffening effect and the contribution of the torsional strength by concrete.
In this study, the tensile strength of 321 full-sized grout-filled splice steeve specimens were compared and analyzed in order to afford the data for a reasonable and economical design of this system. The experimental variables analyzed in this study were embedment length of reinforcing bars, compressive strength of grout, sleeve geometry, loading pattern and final failure mode of specimen. Following main conclusions are obtained : 1) The strength of grout-filled splice sleeve tends to be improved with increasing compressive strength of grout and embedment length of reinforcing bars. Specially this tendency appears apparent in specimens of bond failure rather than rebar failure. 2) The results of this study show that the sleeve geometry have influence on the bond strength of grout-filled splice sleeve. 3) The grout-filled splice sleeve of bond failure don't show the difference of tensile strength according to size of rebar. 4) It is verified that the tensile strength required in ACI and domestic code is retained either when the compressive strength of grout over 70 MPa is used with embedment length of reinforcing bars over 4.5d or when the compressive strength of grout over 80 MPa is used with embedment length of rebars over 3.9d. 5) It is verified that the tensile strength required in AIJ code is retained in case when the embedment length of reinforcing bars is 0.8 times the rebar diameter longer than in ACI code.
In the design of reinforced rectangular concrete beam structure, the minimum amount of flexural reinforcement is required to avoid brittle failure. KCI code is based on concept of ultimate strength and usually used as a model code. But bridge design code enacted by Ministry of land, transportation and maritime affairs in 2012 is based on concept of limit state and similar to Euro code EN 1992-2. This means that the minimum reinforcement presented in both design codes has different origination and safety margin. When rectangular concrete beams with minimum reinforcement are designed according to EN and KCI codes, the amount of minimum reinforcement specified in EN code is only 76% of that in KCI code. This makes the design engineers to be confused. In this study, flexural tests were conducted on nine beams with the two different minimum reinforcement specified in KCI and EN design codes. In results, the measured ratios of nominal strength to crack strength from the test were about 25% greater than those evaluated from the equations presented in KCI and EN codes. The EN beams having only 76% of the minimum reinforcement for the KCI beams were fractured by rupture of steel reinforcement but in ductile manner. It is confirmed that the minimum reinforcement concrete beams designed according to both codes have enough safety margin in flexural capacity and moreover in ductility.

Safety critical systems require exhaustive verification of safety properties, because even a single corner-case fault can cause a critical safety failure. However, existing verification approaches are too costly in terms of time and computational resource required, making it hard to be applied in practice. In this paper, we implemented a tool for minimizing the size of the verification target w.r.t. verification properties to check, based on program slicing technique[1]. The efficacy of program slicing using our tool is demonstrated in a case study with a verification target Trampoline[3], which is an open source automotive operating system compliant with OSEK/VDX[2]. Experiments have shown enhanced performance in verification, with a 71% reduction in the size of the code.

Since the inception of nuclear power as a commercial energy source, safety has been recognized as a prime consideration in the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of nuclear power plants. The release of radioactivity to the environment requires the failure of multiple safety systems and the breach of three physical barriers: fuel cladding, the reactor cooling system, and containment. In this study, nuclear reactor containment pressurization has been modeled in a large break-loss of coolant accident (LB-LOCA) by programming single-cell and multicell models in MATLAB. First, containment has been considered as a control volume (single-cell model). In addition, spray operation has been added to this model. In the second step, the single-cell model has been developed into a multicell model to consider the effects of the nodalization and spatial location of cells in the containment pressurization in comparison with the single-cell model. In the third step, the accident has been simulated using the CONTAIN 2.0 code. Finally, Bushehr nuclear power plant (BNPP) containment has been considered as a case study. The results of BNPP containment pressurization due to LB-LOCA have been compared between models, final safety analysis report, and CONTAIN code's results.

The specimen of current study has the same type with the 3-span slabs of Burns et al used in the study by Mojtahedi/Gamble, which laid a ground for the revision of the ACI318-77 code to the ACI 318-83 code. But those specimens was failed prematurely before it reached the ultimate strength which the specimen had. The reason is that bonded reinforcements were cut off where there is no need for the flexural reinforcement. As results. the slabs failed ultimately where the reinforcements was cut off. Thus, the tendon stresses of failure may have been much smaller than the values which culd reach if the bonded reinforcements were extended beyond the theoretical cut off points. On the based on the fact mentioned above. the specimens which had the same conditions as the specimens of Burns et al were used in the current study, but in which the reinforcements were distributed in a sequence for the reinforcements not to be cut anywhere in the 3-span. As a results, it was known that the current ACI code, revised by the result of Mojtahedi/Gamble's study, overestimated the effect of span/depth ratio on the members with high span/depth ratio. Thus it was concluded that the effect of span/depth ratio on the ultimate stress of unbonded tendon regulated by the current ACI code must be reconsidered and reevaluated.
Static pushover analyses of typical existing reinforced concrete frames, designed according to the previous generations of design codes in Greece, have established these structures' inelastic characteristics, namely overstrength, global ductility capacity and available behaviour factor q, under planar response. These were compared with the corresponding demands at the collapse limit state target performance point. The building stock considered accounted for the typical variability, among different generations of constructed buildings in Greece, in the form, the seismic design code in effect and the material characteristics. These static pushover analyses are extended, in the present study, in the time history domain. Consequently, the static analysis predictions are compared with Incremental Dynamic Analysis results herein, using a large number of spectrum compatible recorded base excitations of recent destructive earthquakes in Greece and abroad, following, for comparison, similar conventional limiting failure criteria as before. It is shown that the buildings constructed in the 70s exhibit the least desirable behaviour, followed by the buildings constructed in the 60s. As the seismic codes evolved, there is a notable improvement for buildings of the 80s, when the seismic code introduced end member confinement and the requirement for a joint capacity criterion. Finally, buildings of the 90s, designed to modern codes exhibit an exceptionally good performance, as expected by the compliance of this code to currently enforced seismic provisions worldwide.

Understanding the realistic behavior of concrete up to failure under different loading conditions within the framework of damage mechanics and plasticity would lead to an enhanced design of concrete structures. In the present investigation, QR (Quick Response) code based random speckle pattern is used as a non-contact sensor, which is an innovative approach in the field of digital image correlation (DIC). A four-point bending test was performed on RC beams of size 1800 mm × 150 mm × 200 mm. Image processing was done using an open source Ncorr algorithm for the results obtained using random speckle pattern and QR code based random speckle pattern. Load-deflection curves of RC beams were plotted for the results obtained using both contact and non-contact (DIC) sensors, and further, Moment (M)-Curvature (κ) relationship of RC beams was developed. The loading curves obtained were used as input data for material model parameters in finite element analysis. In finite element method (FEM) based software, concrete damage plasticity (CDP) constitutive model is used to predict the realistic nonlinear quasi-static flexural behavior of RC beams for monotonic loading condition. The results obtained using QR code based DIC are observed to be on par with conventional results and FEM results.
Design Extension Conditions (DEC)-A assessments of the operating nuclear power plants are generally considered for the purpose of getting additional safety demonstrations of their capability to undergo conditions that are generally more severe than DBAs by features implemented in the design and accident management measures. The pursued methodology is generally based upon Best Estimate approaches aiming at verifying that the safety limits in terms of integrity of the barriers against eventual large or early releases of radioactive material are fulfilled. These aspects are nowadays being experimentally and analytically addressed within the OECD/NEA experimental projects like the ATLAS and PKL series where a set of DEC-A experiments are considered. In this paper, experiments related to SBLOCA at the vessel upper head of the pressurized vessel of ATLAS and PKL are analytically assessed using the CATHARE code. These experiments includes issues related to common cause failure of the safety injection system and operator actions for preventing core excessive overheating. It is shown that, on the one hand, the safety features embedded in the design together with the operator actions are capable to prevent the progression towards a severe accident state and on the other hand, the code prediction capabilities for such scenario are generally good but still to be enhanced.
Damage in brittle rock due to stress increase starts from initiation of microcracks, and then results in failure by forming macro failure planes due to propagation and coalescence of these discrete cracks. Conventionally, continuum approaches using macro-failure criteria or a number of elasto-plastic models have been major solution to implement rock damage and failure. However, actual brittle failure processes can be better described in phenomenological approach if initiation and propagation of discrete fractures are explicitly considered. This study presents damage and failure process of rock using a boundary element code, FRACOD, which has been developed to model fracturing process of rocks. Through a series of numerical uniaxial compressive tests, the feasibility of the developed model was verified, and realistic rock failure process was reproduced considering scale effects in rocks. In addition, the fracturing process and the corresponding rock damage in the vicinity of deep shaft in rock mass were presented as an application of this approach. This approach will be expected to contribute to finding better engineering solutions for the analysis of stability problems in brittle rock masses.
