The alkanes in plant materials can potentially be used as markers to estimate composition and digestibility of diet of deer for the development of feeding strategies, but the analysis of alkanes in plant materials and deer faeces is time-consuming and expensive. In this study, 242 faecal samples and 119 pasture samples were scanned using near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and the concentrations of alkanes in these samples were analysed to develop calibrations for predicting alkane concentrations in pastures and deer faeces. The $R^2$ values for NIR calibrations were <0.6 for $C_{24}$, $C_{26}$, $C_{32}$ and $C_{36}$, but were >0.8 for other alkanes for faecal samples. The $R^2$ values were >0.87 for alkanes with chains from $C_{27}$ to C35 for pasture samples. However, NIR was unable to predict concentrations of alkanes with chains of $C_{24}$, $C_{26}$, $C_{32}$ and $C_{36}$ in faecal samples and $C_{24}$, C25, $C_{26}$ and $C_{36}$ in pasture samples. While the use of these NIR calibrations will accelerate the estimation of diet digestibility, dietary components and botanical composition of pastures, the influence of the type of pasture on NIR calibration will require further examination.
In vivo and in vitro digestibility of 6 diets with a forage to concentrate ratio (F/C) ranging from 100 to 50:50 (diet 1: all hay, diet 2: 90:10, diet 3: 80:20, diet 4: 70:30, diet 5: 60:40, diet 6: 50:50) were investigated using 6 buffaloes in a $6{\times}6$ Latin square design. For the in vivo trial, the individual faeces of buffaloes were collected 3 times per day for 7 days. Individual pooled faeces and samples of each diet were analysed for chemical composition and insoluble acid ash (AIA) contents in order to estimate the coefficient of apparent digestibility (ADC). On the last day of the in vivo trial a sample of faeces was collected from each animal and used as inoculum for the in vitro test, using the gas production technique (IVGPT). The in vivo organic matter digestibility (ADC) rose as the percentage of concentrate increased up to the 70:30 (F/C) diet (67.01, 73.03, 78.06 and 79.05, respectively for diets 1, 2, 3 and 4); the other two diets (60:40 and 50:50 F/C) unexpectedly did not follow this trend (75.11 and 79.06, respectively for diet 5 and 6). However, these data agree with the results of the in vitro trial. The ADC was positively correlated with the dOM (p<0.001), but not with the gas production at different times; cumulative gas production recorded at the end of incubation (OMCV) showed an irregular trend and was not closely correlated to degraded OM. Estimation of in vivo digestibility from in vitro fermentation data was acceptable, despite leaving room for improvement.
This study was conducted to analyze the diversity census of fecal microbiome in horses using meta-analysis of equine 16S rRNA gene sequences that are available in the Ribosomal Database Project (RDP; Release 11, Update 5). The search terms used were "horse feces (or faeces)" and "equine feces (or faeces)". A total of 842 sequences of equine feces origin were retrieved from the RDP database, where 744 sequences were assigned to 10 phyla placed within Domain Bacteria. Firmicutes (n = 391) and Bacteroidetes (n = 203) were the first and the second dominant phyla, respectively, followed by Verrucomicrobia (n = 58), Proteobacteria (n = 30) and Fibrobacteres (n = 24). Clostridia (n = 319) was the first dominant class placed within Bacteroidetes while Bacteroidia (n = 174) was the second dominant class placed within Bacteroidetes. The remaining 98 sequences were assigned to phylum Euryarchaeota placed within Domain Archaea, where 74 sequences were assigned to class Methanomicrobia. The current results will improve understanding of the diversity of fecal microbiome in horses and may be used to further analyze equine fecal microbiome in future studies.
Asthma and allergic rhinitis due to outdoor spider mites are major health problems worldwide. The sensitization route to spider mites has not yet been well elucidated. We examined the microstructure of faecal pellets and silk of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Black and white pellets of the two-spotted spider mites faeces contain a large amount of plant pigment waste products. Black faecal pellets are strawberry-shaped. White faecal pellets are silken threads. These pellets are likely to be the source of allergens of relevant mites because desiccated faeces particles probably disintegrate and become incorporated into dust particles more readily than whole bodies or encased internal organs. We conclude that the importance of spider mites in respiratory allergy needs emphasis.
The result that investigated aberage weekly oocyst nymbers in faeces from 16 broiler farms, Oocyst can be found in the highest during the 5 weeks age. The 3 of the 16 farms have clinical sign of the coccidiosis at the faeces collection. Anticoccidial drug sensitivity against Oocyst isolated in 2 farms to have clinical coccidiosis was tested for the drug susceptibility and resistance in order to prevention coccidiosis effectively. Maduramicin, Salynomicif Narasin Lasalocid, Monensin, Robenidine and Dicrazulir were used an anticoccidial drugs. The results ; Anticoccidial index(ACI) of the A farm were 201.50 in a chicken group treated with Dicrazulir, 194.84 with Robenidine. 172.79 with Maduramicin 6ppm 170.49 with Salynomicin, 168.02 with maduramicin 5ppm 165.77 with Lasalocid, 143.34 with Monensin and 140.63 with Narasin. ACI of the B farm were 193.40 in a chicken group treated Robenidine, 190.64 with Dicrazuril, 158.75 with Maduramic in 6ppm, 151.62 with Maduramicin 5ppm, 149.44 with Salynomicin, 143.10 with lasalocid, 138.11 with Monensin and 137.50 with Narasin. According to interpretation of ACI from Kawasae et al, the drug resistance(less than 120 of ACI) not appeared in two farms, vut the drug tolerance(120-160 of ACI) appeared in two group treated with Monesin and Nalacin in csae of A farm and in all group with treated anticoccidial drug in case of B farm.
Faecal analysis was carried out to identify the diet composition of Eptesicus serotinus after collecting the faeces from 25 female bats. Five bats were captured at a bridge where a colony of E. serotinous was found in Andong city, Gyeongbuk, every month from May to September 2014. A total of 100 faeces were collected and the parts of insects obtained from the faeces were examined using a high-resolution microscope (50 ${\times}$ binocular microscope) and then the orders of the insects were identified by the characteristics of the parts of the insect (mouthpart, leg, wing, antenna, elytra, etc.). According to the results of the faecal analysis, 4 orders: Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera and Hemiptera were used as food resource of E. serotinus. Coleoptera was found in May, July, August, and September. Interestingly, only Coleoptera were found in May and July. Hemiptera, Diptera, and Hymenoptera were found to be used as food resources in September, June, and August.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of extract from Trogopterorum Faeces (TF) on the RAW 264.7 cells. Methods : To prove the TF's anti-inflammatory effects, we investigated nitric oxide (NO) production and own cell viability. We examined the cytokine productions on lipopolysacchride (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 cells and also cellular regulatory mechanisms. Results : TF does not have any cytotoxic effect. TF reduced LPS-induced NO production, interleukin (IL)-1b, IL-6, IL-10 and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) in RAW 264.7 cells. TF inhibited the activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) such as p38, extracelluar signal-regulated kinase (ERK 1/2) and c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) and also the degradation of inhibitory kappa B a (Ik-Ba) in the LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. TF reduced the serum levels of IL-1b, IL-6, TNF-a. The survival rate of LPS-induced endotoxin shock was increased by TF administration. Conclusions : TF down-regulated LPS-induced NO and cytokines production, which could provide a clinical basis for anti-inflammatory properties.
An in vitro experiment was conducted to evaluate the differences in microbial activity of five faecal inocula from weaned pigs and one faecal inoculum from unweaned pigs in combination with 6 substrates. The substrates tested were negative control diet, corn, soybean meal, oligofructose (OF), ground chicory roots and a mixture (60% chicory pulp and 40% OF). The inocula used were derived from pigs fed either a corn-soy based diet without antibiotics (NCON), the NCON diet supplemented with oligofructose (OF), a mixture of chicory pulp (40%) and OF (60%) (MIX), ground chicory roots (CHR) or the NCON diet supplemented with antibiotics (PCON). The cumulative gas production measured fermentation kinetics and end products, such as total gas production, ammonia and volatile fatty acids, were also determined. Both the substrate and the inoculum significantly affected the fermentation characteristics. The cumulative gas production curve showed that different substrates caused more differences in traits of fermentation kinetics than the different inocula. Inocula of weaned pigs gave a significantly higher VFA production compared to the inoculum from unweaned animals, whilst the rate of fermentation and the total gas produced did not differ. OF showed the highest fermentation kinetics and the lowest $NH_3$, pH and OM loss compared to other substrates. It was concluded that the microbial activity was significantly affected by substrate and inoculum. Inoculum from weaned pigs had more potential for microbial fermentation of the carbohydrate ingredients and oligofructose than that of unweaned pigs. A combination of high and low polymer inulin may be more beneficial to the gut ecosystem than using high- or low-polymer inulin alone.
This study determined the macro-mineral levels in plants and sheep, at different times during the year, at three farms in northern China. Samples of plants, animal tissues and faeces were collected at 5 to 8 times during the year from each site. They were analysed for calcium, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium. Sodium concentrations in plants were below those recommended for optimum animal production at all sites for all or part of the year (0.01-1.66 g/kg DM). Low concentrations of sodium in faeces were measured and signs of sodium deficiency (soil ingestion) were observed on one farm. There were seasonal trends in other mineral levels in plants and animals. Plants were lowest in potassium (2.3-13.4 g/kg DM), magnesium (1.28-4.82 g/kg DM) and phosphorus (0.24-1.62 g/kg DM) in winter and spring. However, high levels of these elements were supplied in the feed supplements used at this time of the year. During the periods of rapid pasture growth, in summer and autumn, supplements of feed and salt are often not provide even though pasture concentrations of phosphorus and sodium are low. It may be at these times that sheep will be most susceptible to deficiencies of these elements.

To certify the protective effect of herbal medicine against oxygen free radical-induced myocardiotoxicity, cytotoxicity was measured using TBARS assay and Beating rate in the presence of Tongryeong-san(TRS) extracts or single constituents of this prescription. Myocardial toxicity was evaluated in neonatal rat myocardiocytes in cultures. In the present study, xanthine oxidase/hypoxanthine (XO/HX) resulted in a increase in lipid peroxidation and decreases in beating rate in cultured myocardial cells. In the effect of TRS extract, it showed the prevention from the XO/HX-induced cardiotoxicity by the increases of beating rate as well as the decrease of lipid peroxidation, In the protective effect of Faeces Trogopterori(FT), Pollen Typhae(PT), Caulis Akebiae(CA) and Radix Paeoniae Rubra(PRR), all the extracts were significantly effective in the protection of XO/HX-induced cardiotoxocity in cultured myocardial cells by the increase of beating rate as well as th decrease of lipid peroxidation. From these results, they show that XO/HX is cardiotoxic in cultured myocardial cells derived from neonatal rat, and it suggests that TRS, FT, PT, CA and PRR extracts are positively effective in the blocking in XO/HX-induced cardiotoxicity.
