  • In order to build a new factory, we must have answers regarding the following questions; 1. what is to be produced? 2. how are the products to be produced? 3. how much of each product will be produced? The answers are related to product-design, process-design and capacity-design respectively and they are used for layout-design as the input data. Especially capacity design decision provides the information regarding the number of equipments required and the balance of the line. This paper introduces a case study on the capacity design for a new factory where the retainers of ball bearing are manufactured. A simulation model is developed with ARENA for analyzing the system considered. The major objectives of the study are evaluating the performance of the line which is originally suggested by the company, and finding out alternatives for improving the system. Number of WIP between the processes are also investigated because it affects the space planning of the layout.

  • To ensure competitiveness in the modern automotive market, material arrangements and information managements should be performed concurrently with new car developments. In automotive general assembly shops, thus, new business workflow and supporting environments are inevitable to reduce the manufacturing preparation time in developing a new car in the manner of concurrent and collaborative engineering. Since complete material arrangements for a whole general assembly system is a huge and complex job, several planners should execute their planning jobs and share information. Therefore, each planner should provide others with his/her results with continuous on-line communication and cooperation. Digital automotive general assembly factory is useful the performing concurrent and collaborative engineering and is essential for material arrangements and information managements systems. In this research, we constructed a sophisticated digital factory of an automotive general assembly shop by measuring and modeling through the parametric 3-D CAD, and a web-based system for concurrent and collaborative material arrangements for automotive general assembly via 3D mock-up is developed. By the digital general assembly shop and developed web-based system, savings in time and colt of manufacturing preparation activities are possible, and the reliability of the planning result Is greatly improved.

  • The focus of this paper is to design and control a three fingered hand system with eight axes for smart factory with an flexible controller, and to keep a useful big database for dynamic manipulation based on the experimental results. The weight of the hand module is only 1.2 kg, but flexible motion and powerful grasping are possible. To achieve such a flexible motion control of a robotic hand, we have developed a robust and precise fingered hand with a control system incorporating image recognition system in which we deal with the problems of not only accuracy and range of motion but also the flexibility of hand. The fingers are arranged so as to grasp both circular and prismatic objects. In order to achieve the light mechanism, we reduced the number of joints and fingers as much as possible. In this study, it was used three fingers with eight axes which is the optimal number to achieve a robust grasping diverse shape parts for smart factory.

  • Unlike traditional factory environment, in an industrial factory network applied wireless sensor network technologies, all procedures of discovery, identification and verification of devices should be performed in an automatic fashion. To address these challenges, we design a management system using the device registry server that we propose in this paper. In the phase of device discovery, the proposed system utilizes properties of routing protocol running in factories. Also, in the phase of identification and verification, the system uses unique and general information of a device stored within the device registration server. Such a way allows management system to reduce implementation complexity and to easily manage devices in a factory applied with a wireless network consisting of heterogeneous devices.

  • New modular factory-built methodologies implemented in the construction and industrial plant industries may bring down costs for modular reactors. A factory-built environment brings about benefits such as; improved equipment, tools, quality, shift patterns, training, continuous improvement learning, environmental control, standardisation, parallel working, the use of commercial off shelf equipment and much of the commissioning can be completed before leaving the factory. All these benefits combine to reduce build schedules, increase certainty, reduce risk and make financing easier and cheaper.Currently, the construction and industrial chemical plant industries have implemented successful modular design and construction techniques. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are to understand and analyse the state of the art research in these industries through a systematic literature review. The research can then be assessed and applied to modular reactors. The literature review highlighted analysis methods that may prove to be useful. These include; modularisation decision tools, stakeholder analysis, schedule, supply chain, logistics, module design tools and construction site planning. Applicable research was highlighted for further work exploration for designers to assess, develop and efficiently design their modular reactors.

  • As a decrease in labor became a serious issue in the manufacturing industry, smart factory technology, which combines IT and the manufacturing business, began to attract attention as a solution. In this study, we have designed and implemented a real-time remote management system for smart factories, which is connected to an IoT sensor and gateway, for plastic manufacturing plants. By implementing the REST API in which an IoT sensor and smart gateway can communicate, the system enabled the data measured from the IoT sensor and equipment status data to the real-time monitoring system through the gateway. Also, a web-based management dashboard enabled remote monitoring and control of the equipment and raw material processing status. A comparative analysis experiment was conducted on the suggested system for the difference in processing speed based on equipment and measurement data number change. The experiment confirmed that saving equipment measurement data using cache mechanisim offered faster processing speed. Through the result our works can provide the basic framework to factory which need implement remote management system.

  • A new paradigm based on distributed manufacturing services is emerging. This paradigm shift can be realized by smart functions and smart technologies such as Cyber Physical System (CPS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cloud Computing. Most architectures define stack levels from Level 0 (equipment) to Level 4 (business area) and specify the services to be provided between them. Because of their a rough technical specification, there is a limitation on how to actually utilize a technology to actually implement a smart factory service with this architecture. In this paper, we propose a smart factory architecture that can be utilized directly from the perspective of a smart service system by making the use of System Engineering Process and System Modeling Language (SysML).
