Purpose: The mass of facial muscles can be increased through exercise, as is also the case for muscles in the extremities. This systematic review was conducted to investigate the effect of facial exercises on facial muscle strengthening and facial rejuvenation, focusing on recent studies. Methods: A literature search was performed using the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science databases. The quality of the trials was evaluated according to the PEDro scale. In total, 11 studies were included in this review: four studies on facial exercise for facial rejuvenation and seven studies on strengthening the muscles of the face. Results: Facial exercises for facial rejuvenation increased the mechanical properties and elasticity of the skin of the face and neck, the thickness and cross-sectional area of the facial muscles, and the fullness of the upper and lower cheeks. Conclusion: A study aimed at strengthening facial muscles showed improvements in labial closure strength and tongue elevation strength. Despite the positive results for facial rejuvenation and muscle strengthening, the level of evidence was low. Therefore, in future research, it will be necessary to investigate the effects of facial exercise in a thoroughly controlled experiment with a sufficient sample size to increase the level of evidence.

Objective: To investigate the changes of facial temperature by Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture treatment. Methods: One middle-aged women who has no other disease was recruited. The Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture was performed on only right face. We measured the facial temperature using the Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DOREX Inc. Spectrum 9000 MB, USA, D.I.T.I.) before, immediate after and 10 minutes after treatment. And we used the Wilcoxon signed rank test (P<0.05) to compare the difference of facial temperature at each time. Results: Right facial temperature (the area treated by acpuncuture) increased immediately from $30.02{\pm}1.87^{\circ}C$ to $32.24{\pm}1.03^{\circ}C$, the change of temperature is statistically significant. At 10 minutes after treatment, right facial temperature decreased little, but there was no statistical significance. Left facial temperature increased little, but there was no statistical significance. The difference between right and left face increased after Miso facial rejuvenation acupuncture treatment. Conclusion: Miso facial rejuvenation acupuncture could make the facial temperature increase.

Object : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture on Facial Palsy Sequela. Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture is an Korean medical treatment technique used for face lifting and facial disease. Method : We tereated a male patients who has Facial palsy sequela include contraction, spasm, synkinesis with Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture. The treatment was performed one times a week for thirteen times. The effects of the treatment were evaluated VAS(visual analogue scale). Result : After the treatment the grade of VAS was decreased and clinical symptoms were gradually disappaered. Conclusion : Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture showed improvement in sequela of facial palsy.

The purpose of this study was to estimate skin care effect of Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture with the facial skin photographing system and ultrasonography. 4 Patients who made first visits to Daegu Oriental Hospital of Daegu Hanny University from August 7, 2009 to August 12, 2009 were each given five-times treatments of Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupunture. The facial skin photography of each participant was checked two times-pretreatment, posttreatment-using the facial skin photographing system and ultrasonography. The squares and counts of 2parts of facial winkles and thickness of masseter muscle were measured for each one. The squares and counts of facial wrinkles were decreased. The thickness of masseter muscle were decreased. On this study, we could evaluate the wrinkle treatment effects and reduction of masseter muscle of Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture by an objective method. Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture has notable effect in wrinkle treatment and reduction of masseter muscle. As though we had not wide experience in this treatment, more research is needed.

Objectives : Miso facial rejuvenation acupuncture is a Korean medical treatment technique for face lifting. The authors aimed to evaluate the effects of Miso facial rejuvenation acupuncture on facial skin furrows. Methods : 11 patients who made first visits to Hyo-Jun Korean Medical Clinic from October 1, 2009 to October 25, 2009 were each given one-time treatment of Miso facial rejuvenation acupuncture treatment. A portable fluorescent dermal diagnostic equipment, ECOSKIN, was used to measure extraocular skin furrows and perioral skin furrows width and depth before and after treatment. Results : Mean width and depth of both the extraocular and perioral skin furrows decreased after one-time Miso facial rejuvenation acupuncture treatment. Extraocular skin furrow width, depth, and perioral skin furrow width showed statistically significant decreases(p=0.003, 0.017, 0.041 respectively). Conclusions : Mean depth and width of both the extraocular and perioral skin furrows decreased after receiving Miso facial rejuvenation acupuncture treatment. Miso facial rejuvenation acupuncture may be an effective treatment for improving wrinkles in clinic.

Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the effect of facial rejuvenation acupuncture on cases of sequela of facial nerve palsy. Methods : This study was carried out in respect of 5 cases of sequela of facial nerve palsy patients which had been treated in Dong-Shin university oriental hospital from 2009 year with House-Brackmann grading system(HBGS) above Grade IV. In this study the patients were treated by facial rejuvenation acupuncture. The effect of the treatment were evaluated via scales and picture. Results : After treatment with facial rejuvenation acupuncture, 5 patients improved H-B scale and symptoms of the sequela of facial nerve palsy. The average of H-B scale was increased from 3.2 to 6.4. There also formed forehead folds, better blinking of the eyes and improved asymmetry of the left and right face. Conclusions : In the study, facial rejuvenation acupuncture showed marked improvement in sequela of facial nerve palsy. Randomized-controlled trial for further evaluation will be needed in the future.

Methods : Facial palsy patients over the age of 70 with House-Brackmann grading system(HBGS) above Grade V were treated with Miso Facial rejuvenation Acupuncture. The effects of the treatment were evaluated via scales and picture. Results : Before treatment with Miso Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, the three patients showed H-B Gr V. After treatment, they showed improvement to H-B Gr II, III, and II respectively. There also formed nasolabial folds on the palsied side, with better blinking of the eyes, and improved asymmetry of the left and right face. Conclusions : Miso Facial rejuvenation Acupuncture showed marked improvement in intractable facial palsy. Randomized-controlled trial for further evaluation will be needed in the future.

To investigate the effects of facial temperature and blood flow rates generated by Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture treatment. Ten women in their twenties to fifties with no skin diseases were recruited. Miso Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture(MFRA) was performed on the both sides of their face. We measured their facial temperature using Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(DITI) and blood flow rates using Laser Doppler Perfusion Imaging(LDPI) at pre-treatment, immediately, twenty and sixty minutes after treatment. We analyzed data using student's t-test(p<0.05). After MFRA treatment, facial temperature on the measurement area increased immediately from $30.5{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ to $31.5{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$, a statistically significant increase. Sixty minutes after treatment, facial temperature on the measurement area decreased a little bit($30.2{\pm}0.6^{\circ}C$), but there was no statistical significance. After MFRA treatment, facial blood flow rates on the measurement area increased immediately from $165.1{\pm}52.3$ PU to $342.7{\pm}51.3$ PU, a statistically significant increase. Sixty minutes after treatment, facial blood flow rates measurement area were recovered almost at the same level as before treatment. MFRA treatment could increase facial temperature and blood flow rates.

Objectives : This study aims to suggest preliminary standard procedure for face lift and correction of nasolabial folds using thread-embedding (Maeseon) of Korean medicine(KM). Methods : Three KM practitioners of facial correction and rejuvenation who have over hundred case of practice participated in establishment of standard procedure. Standard procedure contains preprocessing, main procedure for correction, and solution of side effects. Results : Standard procedure is comprised of twelve processes with preprocessing and postprocessing. Preprocessing has position, disinfection, and anesthesia. Main process consists of overall structure correction, face lifting, nasolabial folds correction, and mesh making on cheek. Postprocess covers disinfection, edema prevention. Conclusions : To our knowledge, this is the first work to suggest standard procedure of facial rejuvenation using Maeseon. It would contribute to standardized practice in clinical fields and future study of revealing Maeseon's effectiveness.
