Since Sparse Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (SNMF) method can control the sparsity of the decomposed matrix, and then it can be adopted to control the sparsity of facial feature extraction and recognition. In order to improve the accuracy of SNMF method for facial feature recognition, new additive iterative rules based on the improved iterative step sizes are proposed to improve the SNMF method, and then the traditional multiplicative iterative rules of SNMF are transformed to additive iterative rules. Meanwhile, to further increase the sparsity of the basis matrix decomposed by the improved SNMF method, a threshold-sparse constraint is adopted to make the basis matrix to a zero-one matrix, which can further improve the accuracy of facial feature recognition. The improved SNMF method based on the additive iterative rules and threshold-sparse constraint is abbreviated as ASNMF, which is adopted to recognize the ORL and CK+ facial datasets, and achieved recognition rate of 96% and 100%, respectively. Meanwhile, from the results of the contrast experiments, it can be found that the recognition rate achieved by the ASNMF method is obviously higher than the basic NMF, traditional SNMF, convex nonnegative matrix factorization (CNMF) and Deep NMF.

The purpose of this study was to extract accurate parameters of facial movement features using 3-D motion capture system in speech recognition technology through lip-reading. Instead of using the features obtained through traditional camera image, the 3-D motion system was used to obtain quantitative data for actual facial movements, and to analyze 11 variables that exhibit particular patterns such as nose, lip, jaw and cheek movements in monosyllable vocalizations. Fourteen subjects, all in 20s of age, were asked to vocalize 11 types of Korean vowel monosyllables for three times with 36 reflective markers on their faces. The obtained facial movement data were then calculated into 11 parameters and presented as patterns for each monosyllable vocalization. The parameter patterns were performed through learning and recognizing process for each monosyllable with speech recognition algorithms with Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Viterbi algorithm. The accuracy rate of 11 monosyllables recognition was 97.2%, which suggests the possibility of voice recognition of Korean language through quantitative facial movement analysis.
Understanding of human emotion has a high importance in interaction between human and machine communications systems. The most expressive and valuable way to extract and recognize the human's emotion is by facial expression analysis. This paper presents and implements an automatic extraction and recognition scheme of facial expression and emotion through still image. This method has three main steps to recognize the facial emotion: (1) Detection of facial areas with skin-color method and feature maps, (2) Creation of the Bezier curve on eyemap and mouthmap, and (3) Classification and distinguish the emotion of characteristic with Hausdorff distance. To estimate the performance of the implemented system, we evaluate a success-ratio with emotional face image database, which is commonly used in the field of facial analysis. The experimental result shows average 76.1% of success to classify and distinguish the facial expression and emotion.

If we want to recognize the human's emotion via the facial image, first of all, we need to extract the emotional features from the facial image by using a feature extraction algorithm. And we need to classify the emotional status by using pattern classification method. The AAM (Active Appearance Model) is a well-known method that can represent a non-rigid object, such as face, facial expression. The Bayesian Network is a probability based classifier that can represent the probabilistic relationships between a set of facial features. In this paper, our approach to facial feature extraction lies in the proposed feature extraction method based on combining AAM with FACS (Facial Action Coding System) for automatically modeling and extracting the facial emotional features. To recognize the facial emotion, we use the DBNs (Dynamic Bayesian Networks) for modeling and understanding the temporal phases of facial expressions in image sequences. The result of emotion recognition can be used to rehabilitate based on biofeedback for emotional disabled.

In this paper, we propose an automatic facial expressions recognition system to analyze facial expressions (happiness, disgust, surprise and neutral) using tree structures based on heuristic rules. The facial region is first obtained using skin-color model and connected-component analysis (CCs). Thereafter the origins of user's eyes are localized using neural network (NN)-based texture classifier, then the facial features using some heuristics are localized. After detection of facial features, the facial expression recognition are performed using decision tree. To assess the validity of the proposed system, we tested the proposed system using 180 facial image in the MMI, JAFFE, VAK DB. The results show that our system have the accuracy of 93%.
The aim of this study is to investigate facial temperature changes induced by facial expression and emotional state in order to recognize a persons emotion using facial thermal images. Background: Facial thermal images have two advantages compared to visual images. Firstly, facial temperature measured by thermal camera does not depend on skin color, darkness, and lighting condition. Secondly, facial thermal images are changed not only by facial expression but also emotional state. To our knowledge, there is no study to concurrently investigate these two sources of facial temperature changes. Method: 231 students participated in the experiment. Four kinds of stimuli inducing anger, fear, boredom, and neutral were presented to participants and the facial temperatures were measured by an infrared camera. Each stimulus consisted of baseline and emotion period. Baseline period lasted during 1min and emotion period 1~3min. In the data analysis, the temperature differences between the baseline and emotion state were analyzed. Eyes, mouth, and glabella were selected for facial expression features, and forehead, nose, cheeks were selected for emotional state features. Results: The temperatures of eyes, mouth, glanella, forehead, and nose area were significantly decreased during the emotional experience and the changes were significantly different by the kind of emotion. The result of linear discriminant analysis for emotion recognition showed that the correct classification percentage in four emotions was 62.7% when using both facial expression features and emotional state features. The accuracy was slightly but significantly decreased at 56.7% when using only facial expression features, and the accuracy was 40.2% when using only emotional state features. Conclusion: Facial expression features are essential in emotion recognition, but emotion state features are also important to classify the emotion. Application: The results of this study can be applied to human-computer interaction system in the work places or the automobiles.
This paper presents an effective pattern classification model by designing an artificial neural network based pattern classifiers for face recognition. First, a RGB image inputted from a frame grabber is converted into a HSV image which is similar to the human beings' vision system. Then, the coarse facial region is extracted using the hue(H) and saturation(S) components except intensity(V) component which is sensitive to the environmental illumination. Next, the fine facial region extraction process is performed by matching with the edge and gray based templates. To make a light-invariant and qualified facial image, histogram equalization and intensity compensation processing using illumination plane are performed. The finally extracted and enhanced facial images are used for training the pattern classification models. The proposed H-ART2 model which has the hierarchical ART2 layers and F-LVQ model which is optimized by fuzzy membership make it possible to classify facial patterns by optimizing relations of clusters and searching clustered reference patterns effectively. Experimental results show that the proposed face recognition system is as good as the SVM model which is famous for face recognition field in recognition rate and even better in classification speed. Moreover high recognition rate could be acquired by combining the proposed neural classification models.

Facial expression recognition is an important part in emotional interaction between human and machine. This paper proposes a facial expression recognition approach based on multi-classifier fusion with stacking algorithm. The kappa-error diagram is employed in base-level classifiers selection, which gains insights about which individual classifier has the better recognition performance and how diverse among them to help improve the recognition accuracy rate by fusing the complementary functions. In order to avoid the influence of the chance factor caused by guessing in algorithm evaluation and get more reliable awareness of algorithm performance, kappa and informedness besides accuracy are utilized as measure criteria in the comparison experiments. To verify the effectiveness of our approach, two public databases are used in the experiments. The experiment results show that compared with individual classifier and two other typical ensemble methods, our proposed stacked ensemble system does recognize facial expression more accurately with less standard deviation. It overcomes the individual classifier's bias and achieves more reliable recognition results.

In this paper, we propose an emotion recognition method using the facial images and speech signals. Six basic emotions including happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and dislike are investigated. Facia] expression recognition is performed by using the multi-resolution analysis based on the discrete wavelet. Here, we obtain the feature vectors through the ICA(Independent Component Analysis). On the other hand, the emotion recognition from the speech signal method has a structure of performing the recognition algorithm independently for each wavelet subband and the final recognition is obtained from the multi-decision making scheme. After merging the facial and speech emotion recognition results, we obtained better performance than previous ones.

Clinicians often have difficulties diagnosing patients with subtle phenotypes of Noonan syndrome phenotypes. Facial recognition technology can help in the identification of several genetic syndromes with facial dysmorphic features, especially those with mild or atypical phenotypes. A patient visited our clinic at 5 years of age with short stature. She was administered growth hormone treatment for 6 years, but her growth curve was still below the 3rd percentile. She and her mother had wide-spaced eyes and short stature, but there were no other remarkable features of a genetic syndrome. We analyzed their photographs using a smartphone facial recognition application. The results suggested Noonan syndrome; therefore, we performed targeted next-generation sequencing of genes associated with short stature. The results showed that they had a mutation on the PTPN11 gene known as the pathogenic mutation of Noonan syndrome. Facial recognition technology can help in the diagnosis of Noonan syndrome and other genetic syndromes, especially in patients with mild phenotypes.
