  • An eye location based head posture recognition method is proposed in this paper. First, face is detected using skin color method, and eyebrow and eye areas are located based on gray gradient in face. Next, pupil circles are determined using edge detection circle method. Finally, head postures are recognized based on eye location information. The proposed method has high recognition precision and is robust for facial expressions and different head postures, and can be used in mouse operation. The experimental results reveal the validity of proposed method.

  • The patient, 18-year-old girl, had a class III malocclusion with the lateral compression of the maxilla due to the premature loss of the canines, mild mandibular prognathism, and mouth breathing habit. The treatment plan consisted of 1) rapid maxillary expansion 2) a period of retention 3) extraction of the first mandibular premolars instead of surgical correction 4) completion of orthodontic treatment with multibanded system. The maxilla was separated in the midline by the application of orthopedic forces via a cemented rapid maxillary expansion device. After 18 months, She gained functional overbite-overjet relationship, good interdigitation of buccal segments, and facial harmony due to the retraction of lower anterior teeth.

  • Transbuccal trocar has been an established method of fixation for the bone plate in the case of mandibular angle fracture. Other than extraoral approaches, this transbuccal approach has many advantages in the treatment of the fracture of mandibular angle. These advantages are as follows ; (1) Damage to the facial nerve branches is minimal. (2) Less postoperative scar is formed. (3) Good vision of occlusion can be easily obtained on the entire operation. (4) Shorter operation time is needed. But, in the clinical procedure of plate fixation, it is has a difficulty in manipulation of the plate and correction of position. To solve these problems, we designed and used a trocar tip which can be easily attached to the trocar, and could make an improvement in the clinical procedures.

  • This article describes the orthodontic treatment of a 25-year-old Korean female patient with anterior crowding, including palatally displaced lateral incisors. Her facial profile was satisfactory, but 3.5 mm of maxillary anterior crowding was observed. To correct this crowding, we decided to minimize the use of the conventional fixed orthodontic appliances and employed a less bulky and more aesthetic appliance for applying light continuous force. We determined the final positions of the maxillary teeth via a working model for diagnostic set up and achieved space gaining and alignment with simple Ni-Ti spring and stainless steel round tubes. Tooth alignment was achieved efficiently and aesthetically without the conventional brackets.

  • Supravalvular aortic stenosis may be defined as an obstructive congenital deformity of the ascending aorta which originates just distal to the level of the origin of the coronary arteries. It may occur in several different anatomical form. Three type have been described; the hourglass, the hypoplastic and the membranous type, each term identifying the gross characteristic of the lesion causing by the aortic obstruction. Non cardiovascular condition commonly associated with supravalvular aortic stenosis are mental retardation, facial anomalies, hypercalcemia, etc. The diagnosis can be established preoperatively by left heart catheterization and selective angiography. Recently, we experienced a case of multiple localized supravalvular aortic stenosis involving, just above the sinus Valsalva and just proximal of the innominate artery. The surgical correction which was performed by a vertical incision across the each narrowing of aorta with replacement of diamond shaped double velour Woven Dacron patch under the CPB. He was discharged without any event.

  • The primary purpose of cleft lip surgery should be the aesthetic and functional recovery of the facial components. Triangular flap repair is one of the most common techniques used in cleft lip surgery. In this case report, thirty patients with unilateral cleft lip had been treated using the Tennison-Randall method. The results were favorable and there have been no permanent complications.

  • Genioplasty may considerably change a person's face which needs surgical correction of deformed chin. Comprehensive treatment planning is therefore decisive for the treatment to be successful. A three-dimensional analysis of chin relative to cranial base, upper and lower jaws using the frontal and lateral facial photographs and cephalographs permits classification of the defective chin position and provides a basis for operation planning and deciding upon the operation method. A chin miniplate system has been developed for intraoperative registration securing the sagittal, vertical and horizontal position of the osteotomized chin and ould reduce the relapse rate.

  • Anterior crossbite is a common malocclusion in the early deciduous dentition. Even today, many these malocclusion patients are not treated until the mixed or permanent dentition. And the purpose here is to emphasize the need for early diagnosis and possible treatment for these anterior crossbite malocclusions and their associated facial patterns. Case histories of 4 patients selected from the author's practice are presented. Different methods of treatment are evaluated. Some improvement was achieved in all patients from an early interceptive regimen, although ultimately corrective orthodontic treatment may still be needed in some. It is concluded that early interception of deciduous anterior crossbite malocclusion should by attempted in patients ; there should be no delemma in reaching such a decision. And it is essential for diagnosis and treatment to determine exact variations in growth when some appliance are used, it is recommended that growth-related records be made as early as possible.

  • We report two cases of cleidocranial dysplasia, which was managed without significant craniofacial osteotomy. A mother and daughter, both of normal intelligence, presented with central forehead depression, mid-face hypoplasia, and blepharoptosis. The fact that they have an identically deformed face implied a genetic basis. In both patients, radiologic evaluation revealed the underdeveloped maxilla, persistent fontanelle opening, and cleidal aplasia. Clinical findings and radiologic studies were consistent with the diagnosis of cleidocranial dysplasia. Both patients underwent forehead plasty via bicoronal approach, augmentation rhinoplasty using tip plasty, and epicanthoplasty. In addition, the mother underwent malar augmentation using Medpor implantation and reduction genioplasty. The patients did not experience any postoperative complication and remained satisfied with the operation at 6-year follow-up.

  • This is a case report of correction of traumatic right frontal bone depression. Traditionally, autogenous and homogenous corticocancellous bone have been inlaid or onlaid. This patient who had frontal bone depression of right forehead was operated with an extracranial augmentation procedure using Hydroxyapatite materials. The postoperative course was unremarkble and the patient was satisfied with a good facial contour. Now We will report the results.
