  • Facial asymmetry is found in patients with or without cosmetic facial alterations. Some patients have facial asymmetry that manifests underlying skeletal problems, while others have only limited soft-tissue facial asymmetry. Orthognathic surgery brings about a dermatic change, as soft tissue covers underlying bones. Limited soft-tissue asymmetry, meanwhile, is difficult to correct. The treatment modalities for the creation or restoration of an esthetically pleasing appearance were autogenous fat grafts, cartilage graft, and silicon injections. A young female patient had right-side facial asymmetry. The clinical assessment involved visual inspection of the face and palpation to differentiate soft tissue and bone. Although the extra-oral examination found facial asymmetry with skin atrophy, the radiographic findings revealed no mandibular atrophy or deviation. She was diagnosed as localized scleroderma with muscle spasm. In conclusion, facial asymmetry patients with skeletal asymmetry can be esthetically satisfied by orthognathic surgery; however, facial atrophy patients with skin or subdermal tissue contraction need treatment by cosmetic dermatological surgery and orthodontic correction.

  • The patient, a 20 years old Korean female, have been injuried by thermal burn involving scalp. She was treated bur holes for rapid formation of the granulation tissue of exposed and devitalized bone of skull, over which thin split thickness skin graft performed. With the bald skin graft was covered by a wig, she presented a satisfactory appearance.

  • Facial massages are frequently performed to achieve a feeling of freshness, rejuvenation, skin tightening, and delayed onset of wrinkles. However, vigorous massages can induce unexpected symptoms. Here, we present a case of a woman who complained of an asymmetric facial appearance and a mass-like lesion following a long-term facial massage intervention. A facelift incision was performed. Platysma muscle rupture was observed intraoperatively, which was then repaired. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a vigorous facial massage-induced ipsilateral platysma rupture.

  • In this paper, a weighted value wrinkle detection method is suggested based on the analysis on the entire facial features such as face contour, face size, eyes and ears. Firstly, the main facial elements are detected with AAM method entirely from the input screen images. Such elements are mainly composed of shape-based and appearance methods. These are used for learning the facial model and for matching the face from new screen images based on the learned models. Secondly, the face and background are separated in the screen image. Four points with the biggest possibilities for wrinkling are selected from the face and high wrinkle weighted values are assigned to them. Finally, the wrinkles are detected by applying Canny edge algorithm for the interested points of weighted value. The suggested algorithm adopts various screen images for experiment. The experiments display the excellent results of face and wrinkle detection in the most of the screen images.

  • Facial feature detection is a basic technology in applications such as human computer interface, face recognition, face tracking and image database management. The speed of feature detection algorithm is one of the main issues for facial feature detection in real-time environment. Primary factors like a variation by lighting effect, location, rotation and complex background give an effect to decrease a detection ratio. A facial feature detection algorithm is proposed to improve the detection ratio and the detection speed. The proposed algorithm detects skin regions over the entire image improved by CLAHE, an algorithm for light compensation against varying lighting conditions. To extract facial feature points on detected skin regions, it uses appearance-based geometrical characteristics of a face. Since the method shows fast detection speed as well as efficient face-detection ratio, it can be applied in real-time application to face tracking and face recognition.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to examine the difference of external appearance measurements in subjects of different regional lineages as subgroups within the Tae-eumin Sasang grouping. Methods: We chose 51 Tae-eumin subjects diagnosed by Korean Sasang constitutional medical doctors aided by voice analysis. The subjects were divided into two groups, the northern and southern lineages, by an expert on facial characteristics of the two lineages. We took pictures of their frontal and lateral views by Martin's method, measured projected length of face with the Facial Feature Measurement Program, and analyzed anthropometric facial differences between the northern and southern types. Results: Results show differences between the northern and southern types. First, the northern type of face has bigger measurements than the southern type on the frontal face. Second, the northern type of face has higher measurements of "height", which means distance from pupil to a specific measurement point, than the southern type on the frontal face. Third, on the frontal face, the northern and southern types have differences with respect to eyebrow, point of sellion, and eye. Fourth, on the side face, the northern and southern types have differences in lip, mandible and ear. Conclusions: We found our anthropometric facial measurements of the northern and southern lineages to be in accordance with previous literature. Knowledge of the differences between the northern and southern lineages can be a hint in constitutional diagnosis when differentiation is clinically confusing.

  • Human emotions are expressed in various ways. It can be expressed through language, facial expression and gestures. In particular, the facial expression contains many information about human emotion. These vague human emotion appear not in single emotion, but in combination of various emotion. This paper proposes a emotional expression algorithm using Active Appearance Model(AAM) and Fuzz k- Nearest Neighbor which give facial expression in similar with vague human emotion. Applying Mahalanobis distance on the center class, determine inclusion level between center class and each class. Also following inclusion level, appear intensity of emotion. Our emotion recognition system can recognize a complex emotion using Fuzzy k-NN classifier.

  • This study investigated the effects of sociocultural influence and body image on appearance enhancement behavior (facial management, clothing selection, and weight/figure management). For data collection, a questionnaire was administrated to 378 female college students in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from May $23^{rd}$ to June $10^{th}$ 2013. A SPSS 18.0 statistics package was used to analyze data along with descriptive statistical analysis, frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, and regression analysis and frequency analysis. The results were as follows. First, sociocultural influences were divided into three factors: media influence, peer influence, and parental influence. Overall sociocultural influences had positive effects on appearance enhancement behavior. Second, body image was divided into: appearances-management, body-satisfaction and body confidence. Sociocultural influences had a significant effect on overall body image. Third, body image positively affected overall appearance enhancement behavior.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the Influence of self-perceived physical attractiveness on self-esteem and appearance management behavior cf adult women. The data for this study were collected using questionnaire from 511 adult women living in Kwangju, Korea. The data were analysed using frequency, variance analysis, Duncan's multiple range test, and cross-taps. The results were as follows 1. The focuses of respondents' appearance management behaviors were largely centered on facial and skin texture improvement and hair styling. The frequency of all the Plastic surgeries was not so high, but intention of them was much higher than the practice. 2. The self-perceived physical attractiveness of the respondents influenced significantly on their self-esteem. 3. The self-perceived physical attractiveness of the respondents influenced significantly on their several appearance management behaviors excluding plastic surgeries. 4. The self-esteem of respondents influenced significantly on their several appearance management behaviors excluding plastic surgeries.

  • The facial cleft and duplicated maxilla are lire congenital anomaly. After Rushton and Walker had reported a unilateral facial cleft with excess tooth and bone formation in 1937, few authors described similar cases. The etiology of this anomaly is not well understood, but considered embryologically as a neurocristopathy. A neurocristopathy is defined as a condition arising from aberrations in early migration, growth and differentiation of neural crest cells. This aberrations result in facial malformation such as facial clefts and loss or duplication of facial structures. We experienced a male newborn baby with bilateral facial cleft and duplicated maxilla. The cleft was surgically corrected when he was 5 months old. The function and appearance of lip are improved. Duplicated maxilla will be surgically removed. We report this case with review of literatures.
