Background: When we make treatment plan of class III malocclusion children, it is difficult to determine whether we treat it with orthognathic surgery or without orthognathic surgery. To determine that, we must consider many factors, such as cephalometric analysis, growth pattern, family history, and skeletal age. A Harvold cephalometric analysis is useful in determining the amount of discrepancy by comparing the maxillary unit length with mandibular, unit length. We tried this study to help the decision of treatment planning in class ill malocclusion children by comparison in class III malocclusion and normal occlusion children using a Harvold analysis. Materials and Methods: The materials for this study consisted of 20 class III malocclusion children. Cephalometric tracing and measurements were performed by one investigator. The control group consisted of 18 normal occlusion children and lateral cephalograms were obtained from 8.5 to 14.5 years old children biannually. The relationships between class III malocclusion group and normal occlusion group were evaluated statistically. Results: The lower anterior facial heights between two groups were not significantly different, although the lower anterior facial heights of class III malocclusion group was higher than those of normal occlusion group in all age groups. The Maxillary-mandibular unit length differences of class III malocclusion group were significantly higher than those of normal occlusion group(p<0.05). Conclusion: A Harvold analysis was useful to make treatment planning for class III malocclusion children.
This paper proposes a scalable face recognition method for unconstrained face databases, and shows a simple experimental result. Existing face recognition research usually has focused on improving the recognition rate in a constrained environment where illumination, face alignment, facial expression, and background is controlled. Therefore, it cannot be applied in unconstrained face databases. The proposed system is face feature extraction algorithm for unconstrained face recognition. First of all, we extract the area that represent the important features(landmarks) in the face, like the eyes, nose, and mouth. Each landmark is represented by a high-dimensional LBP(Local Binary Pattern) histogram feature vector. The multi-scale LBP histogram vector corresponding to a single landmark, becomes a low-dimensional face feature vector through the feature reduction process, PCA(Principal Component Analysis) and LDA(Linear Discriminant Analysis). We use the Rank acquisition method and Precision at k(p@k) performance verification method for verifying the face recognition performance of the low-dimensional face feature by the proposed algorithm. To generate the experimental results of face recognition we used the FERET, LFW and PubFig83 database. The face recognition system using the proposed algorithm showed a better classification performance over the existing methods.

The purpose of this investigation was to know correlation of mean values between centric occlusion and centric relation by the cephalogram in Angle's Class Ⅰ and Ⅲ malocclusion subjects. 22 adults with Angle's Class Ⅰ malocclusion (17 men and 5 women, 21 to 27 years of age) and 14 adults with Angle's Class Ⅲ malocclusion (10 men and 4 women, 21 to 27 years of age) were selected from the dental students in Yonsei University. Each subject was given two lateral cephalometric radiographies and cephalometric analysis was performed. All data from these analyses was recorded and statistically processed with CYBER computer system. 1. The results were obtained as follows: There was a strong positive correlation between centric occlusion and centric relation in all subjects with Angle's Class Ⅰ and Ⅲ malocclusion. 2. In Angle's Class Ⅰ malocclusion, measurements in lower facial height revealed significant difference between centric occlusion and centric relation (P<0.05). In Angle's Class Ⅲmalocclusion, measurements in facial axis angle, mandibular plane angle, convexity of A point, lower incisor protrusion, lower facial height revealed significant difference between centric occlusion and centric relation (P<0.05). 3. When the mandible was moved from centric occlusion to centric relation, the mean distance of mandibular movement was 1.27㎜ (0.2-2.8㎜) in Angle's Class Ⅰ malocclusion, 1.70㎜ (0.55-4.15㎜) in Angle's Class Ⅲ malocclusion, and 1.44㎜ (0.2-4.15㎜) in all subjects.
Background The septal cartilage is the most useful donor site for autologous cartilage graft material in rhinoplasty. For successful nasal surgery, it is necessary to understand the developmental process of the nasal septum and to predict the amount of harvestable septal cartilage before surgery. Methods One hundred twenty-three Korean patients who underwent three-dimensional (3D) facial bone computed tomography (CT) were selected for evaluation of the midsagittal view of the nasal septum. Multiple parameters such as the area of each component of the nasal septum and the amount of harvestable septal cartilage were measured using Digimizer software. Results The area of the total nasal septum showed rapid growth until the teenage years, but thereafter no significant change throughout the lifetime. However, the development of the septal cartilage showed a gradual decline due to ossification changes with aging after puberty in spite of a lack of change in the total septal area. The area of harvestable septal cartilage in young adults was $549.84{\pm}151.26mm^2$ and decreased thereafter with age. Conclusions A 3D facial bone CT scan can provide valuable information on the septal cartilage graft before rhinoplasty. Considering the developmental process of the septal cartilage identified in this study, septal surgery should not be performed until puberty due to the risk of nasal growth impairment. Furthermore, in elderly patients who show a decreased cartilage area due to ossification changes, septal cartilage harvesting should be performed carefully due to the risk of saddle nose deformity.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the deviation of landmarks from horizontal or midsagittal reference planes according to the methods of establishing reference planes. Materials and Methods: Computed tomography (CT) scans of 18 patients who received orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment were reviewed. Each CT scan was reconstructed by three methods for establishing three orthogonal reference planes (namely, the horizontal, midsagittal, and coronal reference planes). The horizontal (bilateral porions and bilateral orbitales) and midsagittal (crista galli, nasion, prechiasmatic point, opisthion, and anterior nasal spine) landmarks were identified on each CT scan. Vertical deviation of the horizontal landmarks and horizontal deviation of the midsagittal landmarks were measured. Results: The porion and orbitale, which were not involved in establishing the horizontal reference plane, were found to deviate vertically from the horizontal reference plane in the three methods. The midsagittal landmarks, which were not used for the midsagittal reference plane, deviated horizontally from the midsagittal reference plane in the three methods. Conclusion: In a three-dimensional facial analysis, the vertical and horizontal deviations of the landmarks from the horizontal and midsagittal reference planes could vary depending on the methods of establishing reference planes.
Background Although plastic surgeons daily encounter various facial tumors in the field, reports limited on face are scarce. In our study, we want to provide basic epidemiologic data to help clinicians to decide the proper management for their patients. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients including age and gender, location and size of the tumor, histopathologic result, recurrence, type of anesthesia and any associated disorders who had undergone a surgical removal of their facial tumors and received the histopathologic report in the same institution between January 2009 and October 2012. Results One hundred eighty-nine patients with 203 non-melanocytic benign tumors were included. The most frequent site of tumors was the central subunit of the forehead, followed by the lateral subunit of the cheek and the auricular unit. Of 36 different histopathologic results, the epidermal cyst was most frequent, followed by lipoma, pilomatricoma and osteoma. Statistical analysis showed that males were dominant in the epidermal cyst and lipoma groups. While, females were dominant in the osteoma and pilomatricoma groups. No associations were found between lesions and other diseases. Conclusions Our study is the at most specific and concentrated study on non-melanocytic benign tumors of the face. We expect the epidemiologic data of our study may help plastic surgeons who are confronted with so many facial lesions in the field to decide on the most proper management for their patients.
Purpose: Absorbable plate and screw fixation is widely used technique for internal rigid fixation in craniomaxillofacial surgery. However, there are some potential problems associated with the use of plate. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of bone fixation in facial fracture using absorbable mesh in place of absorbable plate. Methods: The records of 55 patients with zygomaticomaxilla fractures treated by open reduction, performed by the author from February 2008 to May 2009, were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were selected to receive absorbable mesh fixation. The incidence of all complications including infection, hypoesthesia, and deformity was examined. Analysis with postoperative computed tomography follow-up demonstrates degree of reduction. Results: Forty-six patients met criteria for inclusion in the study. All patients went on to satisfactory healing without complication. Postoperative computed tomography revealed good bony alignment similarly non affected side. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that the rigid internal fixation of fractured bone fragments using absorbable mesh is more effective than absorbable plate, especially in comminuted fracture of maxilla.
Purpose: Because of traffic accidents and many criminal violences, the incidence of facial trauma has been increasing not only in adults but also in children. We planed this study to introduce our experience about pediatric blow out fracture and provide more information. Methods: We made retrospective study in 76 children with blow out fracture from January 2001 to September 2005 by retrospective chart review including detailed preoperative and postoperative evaluations, age, sex, cause, symptom and sign, and their post-operative complications. Results: Among our patients, 69 were male and 7 were female. The ages ranged from 7 to 18 years, which shows the greatest incidence of blow out fracture. Physical violence(46%) was the most common cause in this group and was followed by vehicle accident(28%), and fall down accident(17%). Left side(64%) showed slightly more incidence than right side(36%), but there were no statistical importance. Ecchymosis(88%) was the most common symptom and followed by periorbital swelling(68%) and diplopia(30%). 30 patients was diagnosed with another facial bone fracture and nasal bone(51%) was the most common associated facial bone fracture. Fourty four Patients(60%) got an orbital wall reconstruction in 7 days after trauma. After the operation, only 3 patients(4%) suffered from diplopia postoperative 3 month, and resolved in 4 years. Conclusion: The incidence of blow out fracture in children has been increasing every year, and violence has become more important etiology of pediatric blow out fracture and public and private education institutions were the most common place that blow out fracture originated. Accurate diagnosis and careful treatment plans are important in pediatric blow out fracture.
Background: Bell's palsy produces a complex problem that involves not only facial motor weakness, but also psychiatric issues. However, the relationship between facial neuromotor system impairment and psychological adjustment has not been well understood. Methods: We have performed psychological evaluations in patients with acute unilateral Bell's palsy within 2 weeks after onset. Thirty patients with Bell's palsy (10 men, 20 women) were included, who were diagnosed by neurologic examination, electrophysiologic study and/or brain MRI. We measured facial motor scale of impairment (House-Brackmann, HB scale) and psychosocial adjustment [Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)] at the time of initial presentation and 1 month after diagnosis. Results: The age of the enrolled patients ranged from 16 to 80 years. The mean grade of initial and follow up HB scale were 3.87 (SD: 0.63, range 2~5) and 1.77 (SD: 1.10, range 1~5). The mean score of initial and follow up BAI, BDI were 11.93 (range; 0 to 47, SD: 9.65, very low anxiety), 14.73 (range; 0 to 41, SD: 9.21 minimal depression) and 7.5 (range; 0 to 36, SD: 8.58, very low anxiety), 9.33 (range; 0 to 30, SD: 8.19 minimal depression). There was positive correlation between improvement of HB scale and improvement of BAI and BDI score. Conclusions: Bell's palsy is associated with the psychological problems such as depression and anxiety, and the improvement of motor symptom is associated with the improvement of these psychological problems.
For the purposes of augmentation of the aid for case analysis and diagnosis of malocclusion, a roentgenocephalometric study was made from 84 Korean adolescences. The Subjects consist of 42 males and 42 females aged from 17 to 20 years with normal occlusion and acceptable facial appearance. The author measured 18 angles and 14 linear distances as suggested by Jarabak. The following results were obtained. 1) Each linear measurement of the males' skull was greaten than that of the females. 2) The posterior to anterior facial height was $69.2\%$ in the males and $67.1\%$ in the females. 3) In the relationship of upper lip to esthetic line, the lip of females was more behind than that of males. 4) Saddle angle was $124.7^{\circ}$, articular angle was $148.7^{\circ}$, genial angle was $119.4^{\circ}$ and upper and lower genial angles were $45.1^{\circ}\;(N-Go-a^{\circ})$ and $74.2^{\circ}\;(N-Go-Me^{\circ})$. 5) The ratio of mandibular body to anterior cranial base was about 1:1. 1. 6) The angulations of $SNA^{\circ},\;SNB^{\circ}\;and\;SNP^{\circ}$ were as follows; $SNA^{\circ},\;80.3^{\circ},\;SNB^{\circ},\;79.8^{\circ},\;SNP^{\circ},\;81.1^{\circ}$. 7) The angle of the sella-nasion plane to the mandibular plane $(SNG^{\circ}Me^{\circ})$ was $32.0^{\circ}$ and that of the occlusal plane to the mandibular plane was $18.2^{\circ}$. 8) The angle of the maxillary central incisor to the sellanasion plane $(1-SN^{\circ})$ was $105.6^{\circ}$. That of the mandibular central incisor to the mandibular plane $(1-GoMe^{\circ})$ was $94.0^{\circ}$, and the interincisal angle $(1\;to\;1^{\circ})$ was $127.6^{\circ}$. 9) The linear distance from incisal edge of upper central incisor to facial plane was 8.0mm and that of lower central incisor was 4.6mm. 10) In the relationship of the lower lip to the esthetic line, the lower lip was 0.2mm front of the esthetic line.
