This paper introduces a new model based method for facial expression recognition that uses facial grid angles as feature space. In order to be able to recognize the six main facial expression, proposed method uses a grid approach and therefore it establishes a new feature space based on the angles that each gird's edge and vertex form. The way taken in the paper is robust against several affine transformations such as translation, rotation, and scaling which in other approaches are considered very harmful in the overall accuracy of a facial expression recognition algorithm. Also, this paper demonstrates the process that the feature space is created using angles and how a selection process of feature subset within this space is applied with Wrapper approach. Selected features are classified by SVM, 3-NN classifier and classification results are validated with two-tier cross validation. Proposed method shows 94% classification result and feature selection algorithm improves results by up to 10% over the full set of feature.

This study proposed LDP (Local Directional Pattern) as a new local micro pattern for facial expression recognition to solve noise sensitive problem of LBP (Local Binary Pattern). The proposed method extracts 8-directional components using $m{\times}m$ mask to solve LBP's problem and choose biggest k components, each chosen component marked with 1 as a bit, otherwise 0. Finally, generates a pattern code with bit sequence as 8-directional components. The result shows better performance of rotation and noise adaptation. Also, a new local facial feature can be developed to present both PFF (permanent Facial Feature) and TFF (Transient Facial Feature) based on the proposed method.
In Facial Expression Recognition Systems (FERS), only particular regions of the face are utilized for discrimination. The areas of the eyes, eyebrows, nose, and mouth are the most important features in any FERS. Applying facial features descriptors such as the local binary pattern (LBP) on such areas results in an effective and efficient FERS. In this paper, we propose an automatic facial expression recognition system. Unlike other systems, it detects and extracts the informative and discriminant regions of the face (i.e., eyes, nose, and mouth areas) using Haar-feature based cascade classifiers and these region-based features are stored into separate image files as a preprocessing step. Then, LBP is applied to these image files for facial texture representation and a feature-vector per subject is obtained by concatenating the resulting LBP histograms of the decomposed region-based features. The one-vs.-rest SVM, which is a popular multi-classification method, is employed with the Radial Basis Function (RBF) for facial expression classification. Experimental results show that this approach yields good performance for both frontal and near-frontal facial images in terms of accuracy and time complexity. Cohn-Kanade and JAFFE, which are benchmark facial expression datasets, are used to evaluate this approach.
The present study describes a combination method to recognize the human affective states such as anger, happiness, sadness, or surprise. For this, we extracted emotional features from voice signals and facial expressions, and then trained them to recognize emotional states using hidden Markov model (HMM) and neural network (NN). For voices, we used prosodic parameters such as pitch signals, energy, and their derivatives, which were then trained by HMM for recognition. For facial expressions, on the other hands, we used feature parameters extracted from thermal and visible images, and these feature parameters were then trained by NN for recognition. The recognition rates for the combined parameters obtained from voice and facial expressions showed better performance than any of two isolated sets of parameters. The simulation results were also compared with human questionnaire results.
Facial expression recognition is an intensive research area for designing Human Computer Interfaces. In this work, we present a new facial expression recognition system utilizing Enhanced Independent Component Analysis (EICA) for feature extraction and discrete Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for recognition. Our proposed approach for the first time deals with sequential images of emotion-specific facial data analyzed with EICA and recognized with HMM. Performance of our proposed system has been compared to the conventional approaches where Principal and Independent Component Analysis are utilized for feature extraction. Our preliminary results show that our proposed algorithm produces improved recognition rates in comparison to previous works.
Facial feature detection is a basic technology in applications such as human computer interface, face recognition, face tracking and image database management. The speed of feature detection algorithm is one of the main issues for facial feature detection in real-time environment. Primary factors like a variation by lighting effect, location, rotation and complex background give an effect to decrease a detection ratio. A facial feature detection algorithm is proposed to improve the detection ratio and the detection speed. The proposed algorithm detects skin regions over the entire image improved by CLAHE, an algorithm for light compensation against varying lighting conditions. To extract facial feature points on detected skin regions, it uses appearance-based geometrical characteristics of a face. Since the method shows fast detection speed as well as efficient face-detection ratio, it can be applied in real-time application to face tracking and face recognition.

This study proposes the design and implementation of the system for a facial expression recognition system. LDP(Local Directional Pattern) feature computes the edge response in a different direction from a pixel with the relationship of neighbor pixels. It is necessary to be estimated that LDP code can represent facial features correctly under various conditions. In this respect, we build the system of facial expression recognition to test LDP performance quickly and the proposed evaluation system consists of six components. we experiment the recognition rate with local micro patterns (LDP, Gabor, LBP) in the proposed evaluation system.

Facial recognition system is a biometric manipulation. Its applicability is simpler, and its work range is broader than fingerprints, iris scans, signatures, etc. The system utilizes two technologies, such as face detection and recognition. This study aims to develop a facial recognition system to recognize person's faces. Facial recognition system can map facial characteristics from photos or videos and compare the information with a given facial database to find a match, which helps identify a face. The proposed system can assist in face recognition. The developed system records several images, processes recorded images, checks for any match in the database, and returns the result. The developed technology can recognize multiple faces in live recordings.
In this paper, we present a new approach to detect and recognize human face in the image from vision camera equipped on the mobile robot platform. Due to the mobility of camera platform, obtained facial image is small and pose-various. For this condition, new algorithm should cope with these constraints and can detect and recognize face in nearly real time. In detection step, ‘coarse to fine’ detection strategy is used. Firstly, region boundary including face is roughly located by dual ellipse templates of facial color and on this region, the locations of three main facial features- two eyes and mouth-are estimated. For this, simplified facial feature maps using characteristic chrominance are made out and candidate pixels are segmented as eye or mouth pixels group. These candidate facial features are verified whether the length and orientation of feature pairs are suitable for face geometry. In recognition step, pseudo-convex hull area of gray face image is defined which area includes feature triangle connecting two eyes and mouth. And random lattice line set are composed and laid on this convex hull area, and then 2D appearance of this area is represented. From these procedures, facial information of detected face is obtained and face DB images are similarly processed for each person class. Based on facial information of these areas, distance measure of match of lattice lines is calculated and face image is recognized using this measure as a classifier. This proposed detection and recognition algorithms overcome the constraints of previous approach [15], make real-time face detection and recognition possible, and guarantee the correct recognition irregardless of some pose variation of face. The usefulness at mobile robot application is demonstrated.
Facial expression recognition technology that has potentialities for applying various fields is appling on the man-machine interface development, human identification test, and restoration of facial expression by virtual model etc. Using sequential facial images, this study proposes a simpler method for detecting human facial expressions such as happiness, anger, surprise, and sadness. Moreover the proposed method can detect the facial expressions in the conditions of the sequential facial images which is not rigid motion. We identify the determinant face and elements of facial expressions and then estimates the feature regions of the elements by using information about color, size, and position. In the next step, the direction patterns of feature regions of each element are determined by using optical flows estimated gradient methods. Using the direction model proposed by this study, we match each direction patterns. The method identifies a facial expression based on the least minimum score of combination values between direction model and pattern matching for presenting each facial expression. In the experiments, this study verifies the validity of the Proposed methods.
