  • Customer engagement has been the main objective of brand companies in their marketing through social networking sites (SNS). Facebook is the most popular platform for SNS marketing, especially for companies that try to engage with their customers by providing various values through their brand pages (i.e., brand communities). The management of brand pages, therefore, becomes "the means" by which to achieve the result ("the end") of SNS marketing, and visitors to the brand pages (i.e., brand communities) then come to have a favorable attitude toward the brand. Based on a "means-ends" framework, this study examines the development of engagement between customers and brands in terms of brand page engagement as the means objective and brand attitude as the ends objective in the context of Facebook. This study further examines the antecedents and consequences of brand page engagement based on the customer value theory with two-stage data collection. This study contributes to the literature by explaining the roles and effects of brand page engagement in SNS marketing. This study further provides guidance to SNS providers and practitioners on SNS marketing strategies.

  • In the era of social media, marketers have struggled to understand and serve participants' diverse and multifaceted needs in a novel form of online brand community in the social-networking sites such as Facebook. Thus, this study identifies different groups of participants affiliated with Facebook brand pages based on their needs for brand connection. The need-based segments are validated by comparing results across foodservice and consumer goods. Results of cluster analysis reveal three distinct segments (i.e., residents, lurkers, and peepers) based on participants' functional, experiential, and incentive needs. Results of multivariate analysis of variance illustrate significant differences in relational tendencies for a brand of interest among these three groups. The three groups are profiled based on participants' engagement level. Findings of this study are expected to help marketers better understand the needs of diverse participants in their SNS-embedded brand community so they can develop tailored communication strategies for targeted groups.

According to the hierarchy effect model, the effect of communication appears to be the sequentiality of cognition-attitude-behavior. Applying this theory, this study predicted that when consumers who have higher involvement and knowledge on specific cities through search behavior, they will be more active in information search through Facebook fan page subscription and will lead to direct tourism behavior. To verify the prediction, we examined the influences among search volume of Seoul shown in Google Trend, the number of fans of official facebook page named 'Seoul Korea', and the number of foreign tourists. As a result, the type of search keyword was divided into four categories: tourism attraction keyword, natural environment keyword, symbolic keyword, and accessibility keyword. The regression analysis showed that tourism attraction keyword and symbolic keyword have influence on Facebook fanpage 'Like'. In addition, facebook fanpage fan size have mediation effect between search volume and number of tourists. All in all, it would be useful to appeal to foreign tourists with a message that emphasizes tourism attraction and Korea-related contents.
