  • We present the accurate investigation the seismic behavior of the gravity retaining wall built near rock face based on numerical method. The retaining wall is a useful structure in geotechnical engineering, where the earthquake is a common phenomenon; therefore, the evaluation of the behavior of the retaining wall during an earthquake is essential. However, in all previous studies, the backfill behind the wall was usually approximated by a homogeneous region, while in contrast, in practice, in many cases retaining walls are used to support the soil pressure in, inhomogeneous, mountainous area. This suggests an accurate investigation of the problem, i.e., numerical analysis. The numerical results will be compared with some of recently proposed analytical methods to show the accuracy of the proposed method. We show that increasing the volume of the rock face yields decreasing the permanent horizontal displacement of the gravity retaining wall built near rock face. Besides, we see that the permanent horizontal displacement of the gravity retaining wall with homogenous backfill is more than permanent horizontal displacement of the gravity retaining wall case of the built near rock face in different frequency contents.

  • Although masonry buildings fell into disfavour in the 1990's because of factors such ac bricklayers' high labor costs, bad reputation of poorly constructed masonry, masonry face wall is still preferred in korea as well as in other countries for its decorative value. Recently may problems with masonry face wall with opening have been reported, including cracks, deflection, swelling and even wall collapse in old masonry buildings, that mainly induced from the corrosion of connecting materials. So, it is necessary to develop the effective and uncorrosion connector. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the structural performance of masonry face walls with opening constructed by new connectors, spiral stainless anchors and to provide basic data for the field application of this method. The specimen reinforced bed joint has maximum load and displacement any other specimens.

  • Recently, a new reinforced retaining wall with light steel support face has been developed. In this study, full size in-situ test is carried out to investigate the stability of the new reinforced retaining wall. The lateral displacement of wall, lateral earth pressure, and settlement of the reinforced retaining wall are measured in the full size test. And numerical analysis by 3-D finite element method is also carried out to compare the test results with those of the analysis. From the full size in-situ test, the maximum lateral displacement of wall is 46mm(0.009H) and the maximum settlement is 21.5mm. And comparing these values with those of numerical analysis, it is confirmed that the new reinforced retaining wall with light steel support face is stable and applicable.

  • In the past decade, various experimental programmes were undertaken to address the lack of information on the interaction between steel coupling beams and reinforced concrete shear wall in a hybrid coupled shear wall system. In this paper, the seismic performance of steel coupling beam-wall connections in a hybrid coupled shear wall system is examined through results of an experimental research programme where three 2/3-scale specimens were tested under cyclic loading. The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behaviour on the steel coupling beam-wall connection, i.e., the face bearing plates and the horizontal ties in the panel region of steel coupling beam-wall connections. Panel shear strength reflects enhancement achieved through mobilization of the reinforced concrete panel using face bearing plates and/or horizontal ties in the panel region of steel coupling beam-wall connections.

  • In this paper the failure behavior of the reinforced earth retaining wall structures according to the deformed types of the face was studied by model test using carbon rods. In model test the behavior of the face for the model of the reinforced earth wall was divided into three cases : the displacement of the top part(case 1), the lateral displacement(case 2) and the displacement of the lower part (case 3). The photographic method was applied to examine the failure line of the deformed wall with the naked eye. The failure line shows a parabolic shape for case 1, a large circular arc for case 2 and a logarithmic spiral for case 3 in the experimental results. The design failure line for the coherent gravity structure hypothesis was most similar to the failure line for the case of the lower part displacement.

  • This paper presents an extensive analysis of unsteady wind loading data on a 18 m long and 2 m high wall in a rural environment, with the wind at a range of angles to the wall normal. The data is firstly analyzed using standard statistical techniques (moments of probability distributions, auto- and cross-correlations, auto- and cross-spectra etc.). The analysis is taken further using a variety of less conventional methods - conditional sampling, proper orthogonal decomposition and wavelet analysis. It is shown that, even though the geometry is simple, the nature of the unsteady flow is surprisingly complex. The fluctuating pressures on the front face of the wall are to a great extent caused by the turbulent fluctuations in the upstream flow, and reflect the oncoming flow structures. The results further suggest that there are distinct structures in the oncoming flow with a variety of scales, and that the second order quasi-steady approach can predict the pressure fluctuations quite well. The fluctuating pressures on the rear face are also influenced by the fluctuations in the oncoming turbulence, but also by unsteady fluctuations due to wake unsteadiness. These fluctuations have a greater temporal and spatial coherence than on the front face and the quasi-steady method over-predicts the extent of these fluctuations. Finally the results are used to check some assumptions made in the current UK wind loading code of practice.

  • This study was designed as a reference of vertical dimension in prosthetic treatment. The author analyzed six facial measurements, namely, (1) the height of lower face at maximum intercuspal position, (2) the height of lower face at resting position, (3) midface, (4) external ear and lateral wall of orbit, (5) interpupillary distance, (6) distance between pupil and mouth in the 100 Won-kwang Univ. Dental collage students(50 : male, 50 : female), who have normal occlusion, no posterior prosthesis, no experience of orthodontic treatment, and no deformity of facial soft tissue and no temporomandibular dysfunction. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The length of midface was shortest and the inter-pupillary distance was longest in both male and female. 2. The length difference with the length of midface and lower face at maximum intercuspal position was 5.64mm in male and 2.23mm in female, so the lower face was longer, 3. The facial measuring component, similar to lower face at maximum intercuspation, was the length of between medial wall of external ear and lateral wall of orbit. It's difference was 1.3mm in male, 1.77mm in female, and the lower face was shorter. 4. The difference of lower facial length in resting position and maximum intercuspation was 2.48mm in male, 2.24mm in female, the length of resting position was therefore longer. 5. The most clost correlation with the height of maximum intercuspal positioning lower face was resting lower face in both groups.

  • To deal with the case of a rigid retaining wall built close to a stable rock face with cohesionless backfill, analytical solution methods Proposed by Spangler- Handy and Sokolovskii are modified. The modified solution methods, taking into account different friction angles along the wall and the rock face, can estimate the developed static or dynamic horizontal earth pressures behind vertical retaining walls experiencing various types of outward wall movements. The range of application of each proposed method, which is represented by the ratio of the distance between the wall and the rock face to the height of the wall, is compared with each other and also is examined for different wall friction angles as well as soil friction angles. Further, the result predicted by the modified Spangler - Handy solution method is compared with that from the experimental model test on sand. The comparison shows in general good agreements at various stages of retaining wall rotation about its toe. Finally results of analytical parametric study, together with the design charts, are presented to demonstrate the effects of wall friction angles and horizontal acceleration coefficients.

  • In this study, in order to evaluate the effect of two types of connector systems in reinforced retaining wall, the centrifugal tests for the conventional connector and new settlement connector system were performed. In the centrifugal tests, the aluminum plate for the face was used and the aluminum foil was used as a reinforcement. The granite soil was adopted as a fill. As a result, The settlement reinforced retaining wall reached to the failure at 80g-level. In contrast, the conventional reinforced retaining wall was collapsed at 69g-level. It means that the settlement reinforced retaining wall has the stronger stability than the conventional reinforced retaining wall. In addition, it was shown that the settlement connector system is more effective to release the stress concentration occurred at the face of reinforced retaining wall than the conventional connector system.

  • In our country, the application of the design method of face to face dimension in wall-slab apartment has passed 10 years. So MC design method has fixed in the design step to some degree. In Design and Work Execution of House the exclusive area of the apartment was calculated by face to face dimension. And the term of face to face dimension was known broadly to clients, construction company, etc. But design method of face to face dimension is not to simply extend the room size so far as wall depth in design process but to ensure the actual space should be considered with efficient use and assembly of building components. That is to say, Design method of face to face dimension is not to be defined by design step but to be related with construction and maintenance. However in construction process the point of face to face design method was not understood even now. So the purpose of this study was to extract the effect and question of face to face design method in construction process by survey of actual condition of structure and construction quality, and compare this result with existing construction method. The following project of this study is to survey of actual condition of interior components such as gypsum board, windows & doors etc. Therefore this study is to induce architectural long-life through architectural standardization construction and component's exchange, and, by the subject of the study on Apartment to have design guideline and basis for joining part between Gypsumboard and windows.
