  • Because face has non-rigid structure and is influenced by illumination, we need robust face detection algorithm with the variations of external environments (orientation of lighting and face, complex background, etc.). In this paper we develop a new face detection algorithm to achieve robustness. First we transform RGB color into other color space, in which we can reduce lighting effect much. Second, hierarchical image segmentation technique is used for dividing a image into homogeneous regions. This process uses not only color information, but also spatial information. One of them is used in segmentation by histogram analysis, the other is used in segmentation by grouping. And we can select face region among the homogeneous regions by using facial features.

  • This paper presents the representation and its shape analysis of face by features based on surface curvature estimation and proposed rotation vector of the human face. Curvature-based surface features are well suited to use for experimenting the 3D human face segmentation. Human surfaces are exactly extracted and computed with parameters and rotated by using active surface mesh model. The estimated features were tested and segmented by reconstructing surfaces from the face surface and analytically computing Gaussian (K) and mean (H) curvatures without threshold.

  • This paper describes a system fur tracking multiple faces in an input video sequence using facial convex hull based facial segmentation and robust hausdorff distance. The algorithm adapts skin color reference map in YCbCr color space and hair color reference map in RGB color space for classifying face region. Then, we obtain an initial face model with preprocessing and convex hull. For tracking, this algorithm computes displacement of the point set between frames using a robust hausdorff distance and the best possible displacement is selected. Finally, the initial face model is updated using the displacement. We provide an example to illustrate the proposed tracking algorithm, which efficiently tracks rotating and zooming faces as well as existing multiple faces in video sequences obtained from CCD camera.

  • In this thesis, to accurately measure 3D face information using the spatial encoding patterns, the new algorithm to segment the pattern images from initial face pattern image is proposed. If the obtained images is non-homogeneous texture and ambiguous boundary pattern, the pattern segmentation is very difficult. Furthermore. the non-encoded areas by accumulated error are occurred. In this thesis, the FCM(fuzzy c-means) clustering method is proposed to enhance the robust encoding and segmentation rate under non-homogeneous texture and ambiguous boundary pattern. The initial parameters for experiment such as clustering class number, maximum repetition number, and error tolerance are set with 2, 100, 0.0001 respectively. The proposed pattern segmentation method increased 8-20% segmentation rate with conventional binary segmentation methods.

  • Face detection plays an important role in face recognition, video surveillance, and human computer interface. In this paper, we present a face detection system using eye detection with progressive thresholding from a digital camera. The face candidate is detected by using skin color segmentation in the YCbCr color space. The face candidates are verified by detecting the eyes that is located by iterative thresholding and correlation coefficients. Preprocessing includes histogram equalization, log transformation, and gray-scale morphology for the emphasized eyes image. The distance of the eye candidate points generated by the progressive increasing threshold value is employed to extract the facial region. The process of the face detection is repeated by using the increasing threshold value. Experimental results show that more enhanced face detection in real time.

  • In this paper, we propose a region-based segmentation algorithm to extract human face area using a window function and neural networks. Furthermore, we apply the erosion and dilation to remove small error areas. By applying the window function, it is possible to reduce error. In particular, false segmentation of the eye and the lip can be considerably reduced. Experiments show promising results and it is expected that the Proposed method can be applied to video conference and still image compression.

  • Human face detection has many applications such as face recognition, face or facial feature tracking, pose estimation, and expression recognition. We present a new method for automatically segmentation and face detection in color images. Skin color alone is usually not sufficient to detect face, so we combine the color segmentation and shape analysis. The algorithm consists of two stages. First, skin color regions are segmented based on the chrominance component of the input image. Then regions with elliptical shape are selected as face hypotheses. They are certificated to searching for the facial features in their interior, Experimental results demonstrate successful detection over a wide variety of facial variations in scale, rotation, pose, lighting conditions.

  • Many research demonstrations and commercial applications have been tried to develop face detection and recognition systems. Human face detection plays an important role in applications such as access control and video surveillance, human computer interface, identity authentication, etc. There are some special problems such as a face connected with background, faces connected via the skin color, and a face divided into several small parts after skin region segmentation in generally. It can be allowed many face detection techniques to solve the first and second problems. However, it is not easy to detect a face divided into several parts of regions for reason of different illumination conditions in the third problem. Therefore, we propose an efficient modified skin segmentation algorithm to solve this problem because the typical region segmentation algorithm can not be used to. Our algorithm detects skin regions over the entire image, and then generates face candidate regions using our skin segmentation algorithm For each face candidate, we implement the procedure of region merging for divided regions in order to make a region using adjacency between homogeneous regions. We utilize various different searching window sizes to detect different size faces and a face detection classifier based on a back-propagation algorithm in order to verify whether the searching window contains a face or not.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to recognize the facial expressions by selecting face elements and finding its status. The face elements are selected by using image area segmentation method and the facial expression is decided by using the normal distribution of the change rate of the face elements. In order to recognize the proper facial expression, we have built database of facial expressions of 90 people and propose a method to decide one of the four expressions (happy, anger, stress, and sad). The proposed method has been simulated and verified by face element detection rate and facial expressions recognition rate.
