This paper presents a hybrid method for recognizing the faces by using principal component analysis(PCA) and fixed-point independent component analysis(FP-ICA). PCA is used to whiten the data, which reduces the effects of second-order statistics to the nonlinearities. FP-ICA is applied to extract the statistically independent features of face image. The proposed method has been applied to the problems for recognizing the 20 face images(10 persons * 2 scenes) of 324*243 pixels from Yale face database. The 3 distances such as city-block, Euclidean, negative angle are used as measures when match the probe images to the nearest gallery images. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a superior recognition performances(speed, rate). The negative angle has been relatively achieved more an accurate similarity than city-block or Euclidean.
Electron microscopy is currently the only available technique with a spatial resolution sufficient to identify fine neuronal processes and synaptic structures in densely packed neuropil. For large-scale volume reconstruction of neuronal connectivity, serial block-face scanning electron microscopy allows us to acquire thousands of serial images in an automated fashion and reconstruct neural circuits faster by reducing the alignment task. Here we introduce the whole reconstruction procedure of synaptic network in the rat hippocampal CA1 area and discuss technical issues to be resolved for improving image quality and segmentation. Compared to the serial section transmission electron microscopy, serial block-face scanning electron microscopy produced much reliable three-dimensional data sets and accelerated reconstruction by reducing the need of alignment and distortion adjustment. This approach will generate invaluable information on organizational features of our connectomes as well as diverse neurological disorders caused by synaptic impairments.

Although two-dimensional principal component analysis (2DPCA) has been shown to be successful in face recognition system, it is still very sensitive to illumination variations. To reduce the effect of these variations, texture-based techniques are used due to their robustness to these variations. In this paper, we explore several texture-based techniques and determine the most appropriate one to be used with 2DPCA-based techniques for face recognition. We also propose a new distance metric computation in 2DPCA called Row Assembled Matrix Distance (RowAMD). Experiments on Yale Face Database, Extended Yale Face Database B, AR Database and LFW Database reveal that the proposed RowAMD distance computation method outperforms other conventional distance metrics when Local Line Binary Pattern (LLBP) and Multi-scale Block Local Binary Pattern (MB-LBP) are used for face authentication and face identification, respectively. In addition to this, the results also demonstrate the robustness of the proposed RowAMD with several texture-based techniques.

This paper presents a hybrid face recognition method of both the first moment of image and the independent component analysis(ICA) of fixed point(FP) algorithm based on Newton method. First moment is a method for finding centroid of image, which is applied to exclude the needless backgrounds in the face recognitions by shifting to the centroid of face image. FP-ICA is also applied to find a set of independent basis images for the faces, which is a set of statistically independent facial features. The proposed method has been applied to the problem for recognizing the 48 face images(12 persons o 4 scenes) of 64*64 pixels. The 3 distances such as city-block, Euclidean, negative angle are used as measures when match the probe images to the nearest gallery images. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a superior recognition performances(speed, rate) than conventional FP-ICA without preprocessing. The city-block has been relatively achieved more an accurate similarity than Euclidean or negative angle.

In this paper, we propose a robust face recognition method against soft errors with a deep convolutional generative adversarial network(DCGAN) based compensation method by a cross-layer approach. When soft-errors occur in block data of JPEG files, these blocks can be decoded inappropriately. In previous results, these blocks have been replaced using a mean face, thereby improving recognition ratio to a certain degree. This paper uses a DCGAN-based compensation approach to extend the previous results. When soft errors are detected in an embedded system layer using parity bit checkers, they are compensated in the application layer using compensated block data by a DCGAN-based compensation method. Regarding soft errors and block data loss in facial images, a DCGAN architecture is redesigned to compensate for the block data loss. Simulation results show that the proposed method effectively compensates for performance degradation due to soft errors.
Most existing facial expression recognition methods use a uniform grid method that divides the entire facial image into uniform blocks when describing facial features. The problem of this method may include non-face backgrounds, which interferes with discrimination of facial expressions, and the feature of a face included in each block may vary depending on the position, size, and orientation of the face in the input image. In this paper, we propose a variable-size block method which determines the size and position of a block that best represents meaningful facial expression change. As a part of the effort, we propose the way to determine the optimal number, position and size of each block based on the facial feature points. For the evaluation of the proposed method, we generate the facial feature vectors using LDTP and construct a facial expression recognition system based on SVM. Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to conventional uniform grid based method. Especially, it shows that the proposed method can adapt to the change of the input environment more effectively by showing relatively better performance than exiting methods in the images with large shape and orientation changes.

The development of livestock faces intensive farming results in a rising need for recognition of individual animals such as cows and pigs is related to high traceability. In this paper, we present a non-invasive biometrics systematic approach based on the deep-learning classification model to pig face identification. Firstly, in our systematic method, we build a ROS data collection system block to collect 10 pig face data images. Secondly, we proposed a preprocessing block in that we utilize the SSIM method to filter some images of collected images that have high similarity. Thirdly, we employ the improved image classification model of CNN (ViT), which uses the finetuning and pretraining technique to recognize the individual pig face. Finally, our proposed method achieves the accuracy about 98.66%.

When tracking a human face in the moving pictures with complex background under irregular lighting conditions, the detected face can be larger including background or smaller including only a part of the face. Even background can be detected as a face area. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a new face tracking method using a block difference image and a Kalman estimator. The block difference image allows us to detect even a small motion of a human and the face area is selected using the skin color inside the detected motion area. If the pixels with skin color inside the detected motion area, the boundary of the area is represented by a code sequence using the 8-neighbor window and the head area is detected analysing this code. The pixels in the head area is segmented by colors and the region most similar with the skin color is considered as a face area. The detected face area is represented by a rectangle including the area and its four vertices are used as the states of the Kalman estimator to trace the motion of the face area. It is proved by the experiments that the proposed method increases the accuracy of face detection and reduces the fare detection time significantly.
Backscattered electrons (BSE) are generated at the impact of the primary electron beam on the specimen. BSE imaging provides the compositional contrast to resolve chemical features of sectioned block-face. A focused ion beam (FIB) column can be combined with a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) to ensure a dual (or cross)-beam system (FIB-FESEM). Due to the milling of the specimen material by 10 to 100 nm with the gallium ion beam, FIB-FESEM allows the serial block-face (SBF) imaging of plastic-embedded specimens with high z-axis resolution. After contrast inversion, BSE images are similar to transmitted electron images by transmission electron microscopy. As another means of SBF imaging, a specialized ultramirotome has been incorporated into the specimen chamber of FESEM ($3View^{(R)}$). Internal structures of plastic-embedded specimens can be serially revealed and analyzed by $3View^{(R)}$ with a large field of view to facilitate three-dimensional reconstruction. These two SBF approaches by FESEM can be employed to unravel spatial association of (sub)cellular entities for a comprehensive understanding of complex biological systems.
This paper introduces a new local feature extraction method and image matching method for the localization and classification of targets. Proposed method is based on the block-by-block projection associated with directional pattern of blocks. Each pattern has its own eigen-vertors called as CEBs(Classified Eigen-Blocks). Also proposed block-based image matching method is robust to translation and occlusion. Performance of proposed feature extraction and matching method is verified by the face localization and FLIR-vehicle-image classification test.
