  • This study was to analyze the architectural characteristics and facade construction of brick masonry auditorium through the Auditorium of Namsan Primary School in 1936. The results of this study were described separately as follows. 1. The auditorium is located away from the school buildings, and its plane is a chamber of rectangle type with an entrance installed on each of the four sides. 2. The external appearance is Renaissance eclectic style, laid red bricks on the lower wall of the window and having a mansard roof. The front and the rear are symmetric with respect to the projected wall at the center. 3. As to the structure of the building, a concrete lower wall was built on the concrete continuous footing, and the brick wall was constructed on the lower wall. The roof is queen post roof truss, and the wall girders were installed on the brick wall. 4. The auditorium has had a number of repairing and maintenance works, which changed the roof and windows outside and the floor, walls, ceiling, etc. inside. 5. The decorative elements of external appearance include lower wall, brick wall, entrances, windows, roof, and dormer windows. The brick wall gives verticality and solidity to the surface of the wall, and the lower wall and wall girders are connected like a cornice of the wall. The surface of the mansard roof and dormer windows express a stable vertically oriented shape.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the uses and exterior design of the balconies in urban housing from the ancient times to the 19th century. In doing so, the paper seeks to investigate the cultural identity of the balcony in urban housing. The results are as follow. First, in the urban housing the balcony space were made for protection from the heat, light and ventilation; gardening; views toward the streets, city, waterside, inner court, domain for men; breathing french air; watching ceremony, festivals and events; simple houseworks like drying, carpet cleaning and hair coloring; lever installation and fire escape. Second, as part of exterior design the typical projecting characteristic of the balconies was emphasized and they became an impotent decorative element. The monotonous facade changed to a lively design with a rhythmical sense. On the facade the effects of horizontal movement, symmetry or asymmetry from the main entrance, and the center-projection (rialto) were created. In the urban housing the balconies were used for cultural activities which supplement and enlarge the function of the interior space, and moreover the rich effects of the facade contributed to the creation of attractive urban landscape.

  • Lighting for outdoor advertising is very common feature of building facades as they provide the information and commercial identification. As the interest of improving street beautification more widely, application of various lighting technologies has been develop for advertisement such as electric sign board and signage. Furthermore, the installation of higher sign luminance than needed has many negative consequences, including higher energy consumption and light pollution. There are now no standard for outdoor advertisements in terms of luminance, and installation of indiscreet outdoor advertisement without luminance consideration is becoming more commonplace. This study was to evaluate the luminous characteristics of outdoor advertising as a function of sign and building facade luminance, luminance ratio. Data were collected on 8 electric sign boards, 20 internally illuminated, externally illuminated, neon, and channel letter signs and 4 commercial areas. Photometric measurements were taken by CS-100(Minolta) and ProMetric-1400(Radiant Imaging) for various sign modes and sign design. Also luminance of building facades were analyzed according with CIE standard of maximum obtrusive light permitted for exterior lighting installations. The findings are as follows; (1) There were excessive luminance of electric sign boards that could affect adjacent building facade and night sky luminance. (2) Sings that are externally illuminated providing an inappropriate amount of light on to the outer surface of the sign caused higher building facade luminance and potential of unnecessary glare.

  • The annual mean temperature of South Korea has risen by $1.3^{\circ}C$ for last 100 years by urbanization and industrialization. Especially, the frequency of unusual hot weather in summer increases for a long time and the frequency of unusual cold weather in winter clearly decreases. In recently, The considerable portion of curtain wall system is appled to building skin in domestic. As related to this, the Korea Institute of Construction Technology devised the box typed double skin facade(It is occasionally called as FDFS : Functional Double Facade System) as an alternative that reflects the distinctive local climate and saves cooling energy. Two mock-ups($49m^*4.9m$) applied to single skin(curtain wall) and double skin each were monitored under the outdoor condition. Therefore, the characteristics of natural ventilation and cooling energy consumption of each window had been analyzed in real time. The results of this study are summarized as follow, Analysis of the experiment on an air conditioner: the indoor temperature of the chamber with FDFS is lower than that of the chamber with single skin facades by $3{\sim}6$ degrees(C). A temperature variation of about $1{\sim}2$ degrees between the 0.2m and 1.7m height of the mock-up occurs in FDFS, while that of about maximum 7 degrees occurs in single skin facade at noon with abundant intensity of solar accident. Also, 67 percent of energy consumption for air conditioning has been saved.

  • The aim of this study is to find what architectural restoration and street-scaping conservation of early settlement in Virginia, which have processed on the style of 18th centuries. One of the settlements in Virginia was Williamsburg that located in the high land between Jamestown and Yorktown. In 1698, the capital of Virginia was moved from Jamestown for the safer environment. At that time they constructed the town like a small urban that had a straight-lined Duke Glocester Street, Georgian style buildings, and landscapes of 18th centuries. Before 1928 the village was flown into ruins, but Rector of the church, Dr. W.A.R. Goodwin, understood the value of reservation to restore the village as colonial architectural style that has an original figure. John Rockefeller Jr. has taken part in his restoration of colonial style of architecture and culture. This paper surveyed nine cases of buildings and srtreet-scape on Duke Glocester Street. Most of the buildings on the street have a proposition, balance, and equipment of Georgian architectural facade in 18th centuries. The conclusion has three points. First, the Williamsburg has been reserved as an early colonial settlement through the restoration of architecture and street-scape design. Second, main architectural style is a Georgian form that has a balance, proportion, and simplicity of facade. Also new buildings and additions of architecture have to keep 'Design Review Guideline of Colonial Williamsburg' in order to contribute the existing colonial buildings. Third, the main street-scape, Duke Glocester Street shows Georgian architecture and cultural life pattern with tradition.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of Mario Botta's residential design. The characteristics of Mario Botta's residential design are following as : 1. The residential design of Mario Botta planed from 1960' to 1970's is based on the style composition method of modern design, specially by the influence of Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn. Botta's residential design of the 1980's is generally affected by A. Palladio, and is characterized as the representation of classic standard. The residential design of the 1980's shows the establishment level of Mario Botta's residential design, and produces particular Botta's facade. 2. The characteristics of Mario Botta's spatial composition on residential design could be implicated by the spatial distribution of each floor which is divided by three floors, simple and primitive volume which has a symmetry, opening through the massive elimination n the center of front, double skin, the contrast between void and solid, and the inflow of light through the top-light. 3. Most Botta's residential designs have Loggia in the center of facade working as a buffer space which joins outside and inside space together. They also lead the spatial continuous flow. The inside space is combined by the light coming through top-light and vertical opening. 4. They have high accomplishment in complicating details. They show the outside design of a horizontal belt according to the module of concrete block and the decorated design using compositional materials such as an unevenness piled up askew concrete block .

  • This paper investigated the sound characteristics in an apartment complex. The field measurement was conducted in order to examine the acoustical characteristics of the apartment complex in situ. As a result, it shows that there are around 3 sec. reverberation time and the additional sound reinforcements at the area of high height due to the surrounded buildings. Thus, 1:50 Scale model measurement and Raynoise computer simulation were carried out with insertion of the parapet and the canopy on the balcony. In case of a single building, the parapet was effective to reduce noise level at low floor levels, and the canopy was effective to reduce noise level at high floor levels. But it also shows that both the parapet and the canopy were not effective to reduce noise level at middle floor levels. In case of an apartment complex, the canopy was less effective to reduce noise level at each floor in comparison with case of the single building.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of space design appearing in facade and interior composition factors of buildings in the colonial period in Indonesia. Research method is a field study, and subjects of the study is 14 buildings built in the colonial period located in Jakarta. The research result is as follows. First, Facade is divided into C type (colonial style), CT type (colonial style + traditional style), CA type (colonial style + art deco style), and CTA type (colonial style + traditional style + art deco style). Among them, CT type which shows both a colonial style and traditional style accounts for the most. As for Java traditional style mainly shows Joglo roof style and bratticing decoration on top of gates, and the colonial style presents both an Amsterdam canal housing style such as narrow Facade and unusual Gable, and a classical style such as pediment, entablature, and columns. Second, interior space is divided into C type (colonial style), CT type (colonial style + Indonesian traditional style), A type (art deco style), and CA type (colonial style + art deco style). Among them, CT type was also accounted for the most. Selected traditional style is a shape of bratticing decoration on top of gates and a shape of tenon of Joglo housing structure. Colonial style showed classical style such as exposed crossbeams, columns, and pilasters, and as for unique decoration, there are Ancona decoration and Delft tile decoration. On one hand, art deco style used typical art deco factors such as contrast of various materials and complementary color or golden color use as well as zigzag or vertical lines and geometric ornament by combining with colonial style or traditional style. It is expected that such research result will be a practical reference data when Korean construction companies or interior design companies advance Indonesia.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide a practical guide for selecting architectural artwork and analyze relationship between artwork and interior space & facade. The problems with many outdoor artwork did not make the characteristics of the specific environment and did not form a big flow in the urban contextualism. Choosing the artwork, architectural environment for artwork is very much part of the designers' task. When artwork is to be specifically acquired for a particular projects, designer and client must work together to make choices and plan placement. The data are collected through evaluation surveys of college students and graduate students majoring in interior architecture & design, and analyzed by using SPSS-WIN program to find the major characterized factors. It is concluded that architectural artwork should be constituted with nine major factors of interior space - theme/scale, situation/contemporay accord, finished materials harmony, line/two-three dimensional form, proportion/rhythm, sequence, natural/artificial form, abstract/reality expression, originality - and eight major factors of facade - situation, abstract/reality expression, finished materials harmony, theme/sequence, natural/artificial form, proportion/rhythm, static/dynamic expression, originality/. contemporay accord.
