Crystallization experiments were performed by addition of various amino acids into biomineralization mixture of calcium carbonate. Liquid-liquid reaction of calcium carbonate was investigated by mixing calcium chloride, sodium carbonate and additives such as silk fibroin, asparagine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and glycine. Also, the effects of reaction time, pH and solution concentration were observed. Analysis of crystals was done by FE-SEM, XRD, FT-IR equipments. FE-SEM was used in order to analyze morphology and crystal size. XRD was used to measure peak intensities and presence of $CaCO_3$ crystal. Two kinds of crystals were confirmed by FT-IR spectrum. Crystal distribution with reaction time was identified with measured peak areas of XRD and FT-IR data.
Crystallization of calcium carbonate was performed by using aqueous calcium chloride and sodium carbonate for operational simplicity. Reaction time, solute concentrations, pH, and organic additive were varied to get calcium carbonate crystals. Silk fibroin was used as the additive to understand the change of morphology of calcium carbonate crystal. The crystals were analyzed by FE-SEM, XRD, and FT-IR. Reaction time, and pH mainly affected the morphology of crystals. Besides, it was found that silk fibroin inhibited the formation of vaterite and promoted the calcite forms.
Crystallization of calcium carbonate were performed by adding aspartic acid and lysine into $CaCl_2$ solution for understanding biomineralization in gas-liquid reaction of $NH_4HCO_3$ and $CaCl_2$. Proportion between calcite and vaterite of calcium carbonate crystals was identified by changing conditions such as reaction time, addition amount of aspartic acid, lysine, $CaCl_2$, and $NH_4HCO_3$. FT-IR(Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy) instrument was used to perform analysis of vaterite ratio. Under the condition of $NH_4HCO_3$ 10 g and no additive, an increase of vaterite crystal changed to a decrease around 0.15 M $CaCl_2$. Then it largely increased at 0.25 M $CaCl_2$, after vaterite proportion was rising again at 0.20 M $CaCl_2$. In contrast to that, vaterite crystal continuously decreased to 0.2 M $CaCl_2$, and increased from 0.25 M $CaCl_2$ with 20 g $NH_4HCO_3$. Vaterite crystals were observed to be a maximum after 2days with lysine addition, but $CaCO_3$ vaterite crystals showed minimum with aspartic acid.

The crystal growth of calcite at a low temperature range was carried out by the hydrothermal method using amorphous calcium carbonate which has excellent solubility in water. Amorphous calcium carbonate was prepared by the wet chemical reaction of a stoichiometric mixture of $CaCl_2\;and\;Na_2CO_3$. An important factor was the reaction temperature and time taken in preparation of the amorphous calcium carbonate. From the solubility results calculated by the weight loss method, $NH_4NO_3$ solutions were found to be the most promising solvents to grow calcite single crystals. The hydrothermal conditions for high growth rates of calcite single crystals were as follows: starting material: amorphous calcium carbonate, solvent: 0.01 m $NH_4NO_3$, temperature: $180^{\circ}C$, duration: 30 days. And properties of calcite single crystals were follows: dislocation density: $10^6{\sim}10cm^{-2}$, UV-visible transmittance: about 80% from 190 to 400 nm and birefringence: $0.17{\sim}0.18$. Also, it can be known from the FT-IR results that the absorption peak by injection of $HCO_3^-\;and\;OH^-$ ions was not shown.

Shell waste from the butter clam Saxidomus purpuratus and littleneck clam Ruditapes philippinarum is a large by-product of shellfish aquaculture, and it is desirable to convert it into value-added products for industrial applications. In this study, calcium carbonate (CaC) polymorphs from butter clam (BCSP) and littleneck clam (LCSP) shell powders and commercial CaC were characterized using Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed that the optimal calcination conditions to eliminate organic substances and improve solubility for both BCSP and LCSP were $800^{\circ}C$ for 8 h in an electrical furnace. Calcination improved the white index of the butter clam (BCCP) and littleneck clam (LCCP) calcined powder compared with shell powders. The calcium content in BCCP (51.1%) was higher than that of LCCP (44.9%) or commercial calcium oxide (CaO, 44.7%). The XRD patterns of BCCP and LCCP were similar to that of CaO. Cubic-like crystals of CaC and irregular crystals of BCCP and LCCP were observed by SEM. The FT-IR and XRD analyses revealed the presence of calcite and aragonite in the BCSP and aragonite in the LCSP, whereas the CaC contained calcite. These results indicate that butter and littleneck clam shells are potential biomass resources for calcium carbonate and calcium oxide.

Clamshells, which comprise more than 50% of a clam’s weight, are a major byproduct of the clam industry and are mainly composed of insoluble calcium carbonate. This study investigates the use of clamshells as a natural calcium resource. Highly soluble powdered calcium lactate (LCCL) was prepared from the calcined powdered shells of littleneck clams (LCCP) using response surface methodology (RSM) to predict optimum conditions. These conditions, as derived from pH, solubility, and yield of 11 LCCLs manufactured according to the RSM model, were 1.80 M lactic acid and 1.13 M LCCP. The actual values of pH (6.98), solubility (93.99%), and yield (351.23%) under the optimized conditions were as predicted. The derived LCCL exhibited a strong buffering capacity in the range of pH 2.78-3.90 when combined with less than 2 mL of 1 N HCl. The ranges of calcium content and solubility of LCCL were 7.7-17.5 g/100 g and 96.6-98.9%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) of the LCCL identified it as calcium lactate pentahydrate, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed an irregular and rod-like microstructure. These results confirm the potential use of clamshells, converted to highly soluble organic acid calcium, as an additive to enhance calcium content in food ingredients.

Calcium lactate was prepared by reacting lactic acid with precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) which was prepared by carbonation process (calcite) and solution process (aragonite). Effects of PCC morphology (calcite and aragonite) on calcium lactate by the solution process were investigated experimentally. Despite the slow forming rate at the initial stage, the final yield of calcium lactate appeared higher when calcite was used. Therefore, the maximum yield of calcium lactate using aragonite was 85.0% and that using calcite was 88.7%, respectively. For both cases, the optimum temperature for the preparation appeared at around $60^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, the increase in lactic acid concentration over 2.0 mol% increased slurry viscosity and deteriorated mass transfer, which resulted in low yield of calcium lactate for both cases. SEM analyses showed that the prepared calcium lactate appeared as plate-like crystal form, irrespective of PCC morphologies, reaction temperatures, and concentrations of lactic acid.

In this study, the surface modification of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanoparticles by a silane coupling agent, octyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS), was investigated and characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis. Both floating tests and contact angle measurements were also conducted to study the effect of OTMS concentration on the hydrophobicity of CaCO3 nanoparticles. It was found that the active ratio for the CaCO3 nanoparticles modified by 1 wt% of OTMS was 97.0 ± 0.5%, indicating that OTMS is a very effective silane coupling agent in enhancing the hydrophobicity of the CaCO3 nanoparticle surface. The most stable foam was generated with 1 wt% of CaCO3 nanoparticles in aqueous solutions at 1 wt% of OTMS, where the contact angle of water was found to be 91.8 ± 0.7°. It was also found that the most stable emulsion drops were formed at the same OTMS concentration. These results suggest that CaCO3 nanoparticles modified by a silane coupling agent OTMS are a powerful candidate for a foam stabilizer or an emulsifier in many industrial applications.
The purpose of this study lies in analyzing the characteristics of the carbonized textile fabrics and to know the carbonizing mechanism. Samples were Jiyo excavated from the grave of Mrs. Hansan Lee as the wife of Jinju Kang at Daeduk-gu, Daejon, and black fragements assumed as of the outside material of cotton skirt and black dusts collected out of Jikryung for official dress. The composition and status of the fiber were clarified by means of Microscopic FT-IR and both cross sectioanl and side parts of the fiber were observed using the technique of scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Finally EDS analysis was carried out to qualitatively analyze inorganic ingredients contained in the carbonized fiber. As a result of FT-IR measurement, characteristic peak was very strong around $1625cm^{-1}$ and could be found even between 2500 and $2300cm^{-1}$ because of a high-molecule pigmental substance, melanine. When SEM photography was applied to the fractions, the tissues were identified as silk fiborine through the observation of their side and cross sectional parts. SEM-EDS measurement indicated that both the cotton skirt and Jikryung for official dress contained a high proportion of inorganic substances such as Si, Ca suggesting the existence of silicide and calcium carbonate.

However, in the case of concrete, there is a concern that carbonation may proceed due to environmental factors. However, in the case of concrete, there is a concern that carbonation may proceed due to environmental factors. Research is steadily underway to prevent carbonation because carbonation decreases durability and increases the risk from disasters. However, there are many cases in which studies related to carbonation have been conducted only with materials in the same space. Therefore, in this study, FT-IR was used to analyze the difference in carbonation components by structural parts of old buildings. As a result, it was confirmed that there was a difference in peak values for each structural part of the building. The difference in peak values was determined to indicate differences in components, so the level of carbonation progress was different, and it is believed that differentiated repair and reinforcement methods will be needed depending on the structure.
