The specified tensile strength provided by the manufacturer is determined on the basis of the reliable lower limit ($X-3{\sigma}$ : X=average tensile strength, $\sigma$=standard deviation) obtained from the material test results. Most of these data, however, are based on the test results of 1 layer of FRP sheet. Also, the partial strength reduction factor for strengthening RC members with FRP is based on the small-scale model tests. But, the failure mechanisms of small-scale model tests are reported to be different from those of the full-scale tests. This paper present the test results of full-scale RC beams strengthened with multi-layer GFRP sheets up to 3 layer as well as the material tests. From the material tests, it was observed that the average tensile strengths of GFRP sheets are decreased as the number of layer are increased. Also the premature debonding failure of RC beams strengthened with multi-layer GFRP sheets are observed in inverse proportion to the number of GFRP sheets
To upgrade shear performance of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, and particularly of the segments under negative moment within continuous T-section beams, a series of original schemes has been proposed using carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) U-shaped strips for shear-strengthening. The current work focuses on one of them, in which CFRP U-strips are wound around steel bars against the top of the flange of a T-beam and then spliced on its bottom face in addition to being bonded onto its sides. The test results showed that the proposed scheme successfully provided reliable anchorage for U-strips and prevented premature onset of shear failure due to FRP debonding. The governing shear mode of failure changed from peeling of CFRP to its fracture or crushing of concrete. The strengthened specimens displayed an average increase of about 60% in shear capacity over the unstrengthened control one. The specimen with a relatively high ratio and uniform distribution of CFRP reinforcement had a maximum increase of nearly 75% in strength as well as significantly improved ductility. The formulas by various codes or guidelines exhibited different accuracy in estimating FRP contribution to shear resistance of the segments that are subjected to negative moment and strengthened with well-anchored FRP U-strips within continuous T-beams. Further investigation is necessary to find a suitable approach to predicting load-carrying capacity of continuous beams shear strengthened in this way.
Nominal flexural strength of RC members strengthened with FRP sheets is generally based on the tensile strength of composite materials obtained from coupon tests. This method is based on the assumption that bond failure does not occur until the FRP sheet reaches its rupture strength. According to the previous researches, however, bond failure often occurs before the FRP sheet reaches its rupture strength. Some attempts were made to control debonding failure by increasing the bonded length of sheet or wrapping the section around their side of the member(U-wrap). In this study, the flexural failure mechanism of RC beams strengthened with AFRP sheets with different bond lengths is investigated. Their strengthening details to prevent the premature debonding failure are also suggested and its effectiveness is verified.
The one of the commonly reported failure mode of the RC beam strengthened with FRP was caused by the separation of the concrete cover, so called delamination. Therefore, ACI440 recommended that concrete cover delamination can be prevented in strengthened beams if bond length of FRP composite be exteneded over a point of cracking moment. In this study, the failure mode and the flexural performance of RC beam with different bond length of FRP are estimated. Each bonded length is calculated based on the point of cracking moment with addition or subtraction of specific length(=150mm). The results of this study show that mid-span debonding occurs in the specimen strengthened with CFRP strips which are bonded over the point of cracking moment, while concrete cover deliamination occurs at the termination point of CFRP in the specimen with less bonded length than the point of cracking moment region.

The effect of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening on the behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams with web openings is studied. It has been observed that the load-carrying capacity and deflection in the presence of an opening reduced by approximately 50% and 75%, respectively. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite models are first validated with the results obtained from experimental data. Thereafter, a series of parametric studies are conducted for the beam with an opening. In the study, it is observed that a square opening shape is critical in comparison to the elliptical and circular-shaped opening. The web opening located near the support is found to be critically compared to the opening in the middle of the beam. Given the critical opening shape situated at the critical location, the increase in FRP layers enhances the load-deformation behaviour of the FRP-wrapped RC beam. However, the load-deformation responses are not significantly improved beyond a certain threshold value of FRP layers.

Ten beams bonded with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates were tested under cyclic loading with the load range and the FRP reinforcement ratio as test parameters. The maximum load level during cyclic loading was 55%, 65% and 75% of the static flexural strength while the minimum load level was kept constant at 35%. Deflections of the beams at the end of 525000 cycles were found to increase by 16% and 44% when the maximum load level was increased from 55% to 65% and 75% of the static flexural strength, respectively. Beams with FRP reinforcement ratios of 0.64% and 1.28% were found to exhibit lesser deflections of about 15% and 20%, respectively, compared to a similar beam without FRP reinforcement. An analytical approach based on cycle-dependent effective moduli of elasticity of concrete and FRP reinforcement is presented and found to predict the deflections of the test beams well.
This paper presents the analysis of intermediate crack-induced (IC) debonding failure loads for reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with adhesively-bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) plates or sheets. The analysis consists of the energy release and simple ACI methods. In the energy release method, a fracture criterion is employed to predict the debonding loads. The interfacial fracture energy that indicates the resistance to debonding is related to the bond-slip relationships obtained from the shear test of FRP-to-concrete bonded joints. The section analysis that considers the effect of concrete's tension stiffening is employed to develop the moment-curvature relationships of the FRP-strengthened sections. In the ACI method, the onset of debonding is assumed when the FRP strain reaches the debonding strain limit. The tension stiffening effect is neglected in developing a moment-curvature relationship. For a comparison purpose, both methods are used to numerically investigate the effects of relevant parameters on the IC debonding failure loads. The results show that the debonding failure load generally increases as the concrete compressive strength, FRP reinforcement ratio, FRP elastic modulus and steel reinforcement ratio increase.

The present paper investigates the post heating behavior of concrete beams reinforced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars, namely carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) bars and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. Thirty rectangular concrete beams were prepared and cured for 28 days. Then, beams were either subjected (in duplicates) to elevated temperatures in the range (100 to $500^{\circ}C$) or left at room temperature before tested under four point loading for flexural response. Experimental results showed that beams, reinforced with CFRP and GFRP bars and subjected to temperatures below $300^{\circ}C$, showed better mechanical performance than that of corresponding ones with conventional reinforcing steel bars. The results also revealed that ultimate load capacity and stiffness pertaining to beams with FRP reinforcement decreased, yet their ultimate deflection and toughness increased with higher temperatures. All beams reinforced with FRP materials, except those post-heated to $500^{\circ}C$, failed by concrete crushing followed by tension failure of FRP bars.
In recent years, the use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites to repair or strengthen existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures is increasing In order to evaluate the shear strengths of RC structures strengthened by FRP composites, it is needed to understand the shear failure modes of these structures. This paper presents a rational equation to distinguish the shear fail modes of RC structures strengthened by FRP composites using the compatibility aided truss models.
