Stainless steel wire mesh (SSWM) is an alternative material for strengthening of structural elements similar to fiber reinforced polymer (FRP). Finite element (FE) method based Numerical investigation for evaluation of axial strength of SSWM strengthened plain cement concrete (PCC) and reinforced cement concrete (RCC) columns is presented in this paper. PCC columns of 200 mm diameter with height 400 mm, 800 mm and 1200 mm and RCC columns of diameter 200 mm with height of 1200 mm with different number of SSWM wraps are considered for study. The effect of concrete grade, height of column and number of wraps on axial strength is studied using finite element based software ABAQUS. The results of numerical simulation are compared with experimental study and design guidelines specified by ACI 440.2R-08 and CNR-DT 200/2004. As per numerical analysis, an increase in axial capacity of 15.69% to 153.95% and 52.39% to 109.06% is observed for PCC and RCC columns respectively with different number of SSWM wraps.
The bond strength between composite laminates and concrete is a key factor that controls the behavior of concrete members strengthened with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets, which can be affected by several parameters such as thermal stresses and surface preparation. This article presents the result of an experimental study on the bond strength between FRP sheets and concrete at ambient temperature after specimens had been exposed to elevated temperatures of up to $200^{\circ}C$. For this purpose, 30 specimens of plain concrete with dimensions of $150{\times}150{\times}350mm$ were prepared. Three different conventional surface preparation methods (sandblasting, wire brushing and hole drilling) were considered and compared with a new efficient method (fiber implantation). Deformation field during each experiment was monitored using particle image velocimetry. The results showed that, the specimens which were prepared by conventional surface preparation methods, preserved their bond integrity when exposed to temperature below glass transition temperature of epoxy resin (about $60^{\circ}C$). Beyond this temperature, the bond strength and stiffness decreased significantly (about 50%) in comparison with control specimens. However, the specimens prepared by the proposed method displayed higher bond strengths of up to 32% and 90% at $25^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$, respectively.
Beam-column joints are recognized as one of the most critical and vulnerable zones of a Reinforced Concrete (RC) moment resisting structure subjected to seismic loads. The performance of the deficient beam-column joints can be improved by retrofitting these joints by jacketing them with varied materials like concrete, steel, FRP and ferrocement. In the present study strength behavior of RCC exterior beam-column joints, initially loaded to a prefixed percentage of the ultimate load, and retrofitted using ferrocement jacketing using two different wrapping schemes has been studied and presented. In retrofitting scheme, RS-I, wire mesh is provided in L shape at top and at bottom of the beam-column joint, whereas, in scheme RS-II along with wire mesh in L shape at top and bottom wire mesh is also provided diagonally to the joint. The results of these retrofitted beam-column joints have been compared with those of the controlled joint specimens. The results show an improvement in the ultimate load carrying capacity and yield load of the retrofitted specimens. However, no improvement in the ductility and energy absorption has been observed.

Wooden structures are widely used, particularly in earthquake zones, owing to their light weight, ease of application, and resistance to the external environment. In this study, we aimed to improve the mechanical properties of laminated timber beams using novel hybrid systems [carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and wire rope]. Within the scope of this study, it is expected that using wood, which is an environmentally friendly and sustainable building element, will be more economical and safe than the reinforced concrete and steel elements currently used to pass through wide openings. The structural behavior of the hybrid-reinforced laminated timber beams was determined under the loading system. The experimental findings showed that the highest increase in the values of laminated beams reinforced with steel ropes was obtained with the 2N reinforcement, with a maximum load of 38 kN and a displacement of 137 mm. Thus, a load increase of 168% and displacement increase of 275% compared with the reference sample were obtained. Compared with the reference sample, a load increase of 92% and a displacement increase of 14% were obtained. Carbon fabrics placed between the layers with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) prevented crack development and provided significant interlayer connections. Consequently, the fabrics placed between the laminated wooden beams with the innovative reinforcement system will not disrupt the aesthetics or reduce the effect of earthquake forces, and significant reductions can be achieved in these sections.

The design and the fabrication of a 1 MVA single-phase HTS transformer are presented in this paper, The rated voltages are 22.9 ㎸ for primary and 6.6 ㎸ for secondary, and the rated currents are 44 A and 152 A respectively. The transformer has HTS double pancake type windings. This type of winding has many advantages such as ease of fabrication and maintenance, good distribution of surge voltage and insulation of windings. Single HTS wire was used for primary winding and four HTS parallel wires were used for secondary winding. These windings are arranged reciprocally with the shell type iron core. An FRP cryostat with room temperature bore was fabricated to isolate the iron core from the coolant. The winding will be cooled down to 65 K with sub-cooled liquid nitrogen using a GM-cryocooler. The sub-cooled liquid nitrogen has advantages of good insulation because of no bubbles as well as increased current capacity of HTS wire.
At the moment, the section insulators for different phases used for over head contact wire system has been all imported since its first application. However, because the section insulators need frequent maintenance and replacement due to the wear by the friction with pantograph and the contamination, which causes its life shorter than as expected, it is required to develop the insulation material with better wear-resistance characteristics and contamination-resistance characteristics. In this thesis, the author developed the section insulator which adopts Teflon tube insulation material which is composed of the Teflon material with the excellent electrical characteristics and wear-resistance characteristics for a longer expected life than that made of conventional FRP.
