An innovative solution for strengthening of old R/C structures and for improving the FRP strengthening method

  • In this study a new innovative method of earthquake-resistant strengthening of reinforced concrete structures is presented for the first time. Strengthening according to this new method consists of the construction of steel fiber ultra-high-strength concrete jackets without conventional reinforcement which is usually applied in the construction of conventional reinforced concrete jackets. An innovative solution is proposed also for the first time that ensures a satisfactory seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete structures, strengthened by using composite materials. The weak point of the use of such materials in repairing and strengthening of old R/C structures is the area of beam-column joints. According to the proposed solution, the joints can be strengthened with a steel fiber ultra-high-strength concrete jacket, while strengthening of columns can be achieved by using CFRPs. The experimental results showed that the performance of the subassemblage strengthened with the proposed mixed solution was much better than that of the subassemblage retrofitted completely with CFRPs.

Elastic analysis of interfacial stress concentrations in CFRP-RC hybrid beams: Effect of creep and shrinkage

  • A simple closed-form solution to calculate the interfacial shear and normal stresses of retrofitted concrete beam strengthened with thin composite plate under mechanical loads including the creep and shrinkage effect has been presented in this paper. In such plated beams, tensile forces develop in the bonded plate, and these have to be transferred to the original beam via interfacial shear and normal stresses. Consequently, debonding failure may occur at the plate ends due to a combination of high shear and normal interfacial stresses. These stresses between a beam and a soffit plate, within the linear elastic range, have been addressed by numerous analytical investigations. Surprisingly, none of these investigations has examined interfacial stresses while taking the creep and shrinkage effect into account. In the present theoretical analysis for the interfacial stresses between reinforced concrete beam and a thin composite plate bonded to its soffit, the influence of creep and shrinkage effect relative to the time of the casting, and the time of the loading of the beams is taken into account. Numerical results from the present analysis are presented both to demonstrate the advantages of the present solution over existing ones and to illustrate the main characteristics of interfacial stress distributions.

  • 대부분의 에너지는 전세계적으로 제한되어 있는 석유, 석탄, 천연가스 등 주로 화석연료로부터 얻어지고 있다. 최근, 고유가, 석유자원의 고갈, 기후변화 등이 신재생에너지를 포함한 비화석 연료가 세계적으로 주목을 받고 있는 이유 중의 하나이다. 이 연구에서는 고비강성 및 비강도, 고내부식성 및 내화학성 등을 장점으로 갖고 있는 펄트루젼 FRP(PFRP)를 사용하였다. 따라서 부유식 구조물의 설계와 시공을 위해서는 PFRP 재료가 우선적으로 선택될 수 있다. 추적식 수상 태양광발전 구조물의 설계는 유한요소해석 결과를 사용하여 수행되었으며, 구조물은 조립되어 수상에 설치되었다. 구조물을 설치하기 전에 안전성 문제를 유한요소법을 사용하여 검토하였으며, 그 결과 설계, 제작, 시공된 구조물은 외적으로 작용된 하중을 지지하는데 충분히 안전함을 알 수 있었다.

FRP 기계적 물성을 고려한 복합소재 선체구조 적층판 경량화 설계 (Laminate Weight Optimization of Composite Ship Structures based on Experimental Data)

  • The study aims to improve the previous theory-based algorithm on the lightweight design of laminate structures of a composite ship based on the mechanical properties of fiber, resin, and laminates obtained from experiments. From a case study on using a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of e-glass fiber woven roving fabric/polyester resin used as the raw material for the hull of a 52 ft composite ship, the equation for calculating the weight of laminate was redefined, and the relationship between decreasing mechanical properties and increasing glass content was determined from the results of material testing according to ASTM D5083 and ASTM D790. After applying these experimental data to the existing algorithm and improving it, a possible laminate design that maximizes the specific strength of the composite material was confirmed. In a case study that applied the existing algorithm based on rules, the optimal lightweight design of composite structures was achieved when the weight fraction of e-glass fiber was increased by 57.5% compared with that in the original design, but the improved algorithm allowed for an increase of only 17.5%.

SiC 강화 CFRP 복합재의 파괴거동에 관한 음향방출 적용 (AE Application for Fracture Behavior of SiC Reinforced CFRP Composites)

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP) composite with a higher specific strength and rigidity is more excellent than conventional metallic materials or other organic polymer of FRP. It has been widely used in vehicles, aerospaces and high technology industries which are associated with nuclear power fields. However, CFRP laminated composite has several disadvantages as like a delamination, matrix brittleness and anisotropic fibers that are the weak points of the crack initiation. In this present work, the reinforced silicon carbide(SiC) particles were added to the interlayer of CFRP laminates in order to mitigate the physical vulnerability affecting the cracking and breaking of the matrix in the CFRP laminated composite because of excellent specific strength and thermal shock resistance characteristics of SiC. The 1wt% of SiC particles were spread into the CFRP prepreg by using a spray coating method. After that, CFRP prepregs were laminated for the specimen. Also, the twill woven type CFRP prepreg was used because it has excellent workability. Thus the mechanical and fracture behaviors of the twill woven CFRP laminated composite reinforced with SiC particles were investigated with the acoustic emission(AE) method under a fracture test. The results show that the SiC particles enhance the mechanical and fracture characteristics of the twill CFRP laminate composite.

Minimum cost design of overhead crane beam with box section strengthened by CFRP laminates

  • An overhead travelling crane structure of two doubly symmetric welded box beams is designed for minimum cost. The rails are placed over the inner webs of box beams. The following design constraints are considered: local buckling of web and flange plates, fatigue of the butt K weld under rail and fatigue of fillet welds joining the transverse diaphragms to the box beams, fatigue of CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) laminate, deflection constraint. For the formulation of constraints the relatively new standard for cranes EN 13001-3-1 (2010) is used. To fulfill the deflection constraint CFRP strengthening should be used. The application of CFRP materials in strengthening of steel and concrete structures are widely used in civil engineering applications due to their unique advantages. In our study, we wanted to show how the mechanical properties of traditional materials can be improved by the application of composite materials and how advanced materials and new production technologies can be applied. In the optimization the following cost parts are considered: material, assembly and welding of the steel structure, material and fabrication cost of CFRP strengthening. The optimization is performed by systematic search using a MathCAD program.

폴리프로필렌 자기 보강 복합재의 동적 물성 구축을 위한 Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar의 설계 및 제작 (Design and Fabrication of Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar for Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Self-reinforced Polypropylene Composite)

  • 변형률 속도 $100s^{-1}{\sim}10000s^{-1}$ 범위에서 사용되는 홉킨스바(SHPB)는 재료의 동석 거동 특성을 확인하기 위해 가장 널리 사용되는 장치이다. SHPB 시험은 입력봉 및 전달봉에서 측정된 변형률을 사용하여 시험편의 응력, 변형률 및 변형률 속도를 얻을 수 있는 응력파 전달 이론을 기반으로 한다. 본 연구에서는 고 변형률 속도에서 폴리프로필렌 자기보강 복합재료(SRPP)의 동적 특성을 얻기 위해 직접 SHPB를 설계 및 제작하였다. 또한 본 연구를 통해 제작된 SHPB에서 얻은 변형률 데이터의 신뢰성 확보를 위하여 Digital Image Correlation (DIC)를 통해 얻은 변형률 데이터와의 비교를 진행하였다. 이는 SRPP 시편의 고속 압축 시험을 통해 이루어 졌으며 SHPB를 통하여 얻은 데이터와 DIC를 통해 얻은 변형률 데이터의 유사함을 확인하였고 이를 통하여 장비의 신뢰성을 검증하였다.

적층수에 따른 GFRP 피막 Al 평활재의 저주기 피로수명 평가 (Low Cycle Fatigue Life Behavior of GFRP Coated Aluminum Plates According to Layup Number)

  • 섬유 금속 적층판(Fiber metal hybrid laminate, FML)은 금속재료와 FRP의 접합으로 기존의 금속 소재가 가지지 못했던 뛰어난 물성과 가벼운 무게로 경제적인 구조용 재료로 사용된다. 그러나 섬유의 형태와 종류, 적층조건에 따라 물성의 차이가 크며, 파괴거동을 예측하기 어렵다는 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 Al6061-T6 합금에 직조형태의 유리섬유 플라스틱(GFRP, GEP118)을 적층피막한 복합재의 파손거동에 대해 연구한다. Al합금에 GFRP 1, 3, 5 겹을 피막한 3가지 조건으로 성형하고, 피막의 적층수를 변수로 정적시험과 저주기 피로시험을 병행하여 파손거동을 분석하였다. 저주기 피로시험에서는 변형률-수명 해석, 전변형률 에너지밀도법을 사용하여 분석하고, 피로수명을 예측하여 하이브리드 재료에 대한 수명예측성을 분석하였다. 인장해석 결과, GFRP 피막으로 인한 강화효과는 없었고, 피로시험시 나타나는 히스테리시스 형상은 GFRP피막 유무와 피막 수에 상관없이 모재인 Al합금의 거동을 따랐다. 저주기 피로시험 결과 GFRP의 피막으로 피로강도가 증가하였지만, GFRP의 두께에 따라 비례하여 증가하지는 않았다.

복합고체절연물의 극저온 절연성능 평가를 위한 임펄스 내전압시험 (Impulse Tests for a Composite Solid Insulator for High Voltage Superconducting Power Applications)

  • High voltage insulation in cryogenic environment is one of big issues for development of superconducting power application, such as superconducting fault current limiter, transformer, transmission cable, and so on. We had proposed a composite solid insulator composed of plastics and polymer insulation sheets for a use of high voltage superconducting power applications. It is well known that the G10 FRP keeps its mechanical strength at very low temperature and the PPLP is very good insulator adopted as insulations for superconducting transmission cables. The composition of these two materials will show very good electrical and mechanical properties adequate for the insulation components of superconducting power applications, such as bushing, insulation barrier, and even for a cryostat. Dielectric strengths of prepared samples were measured at the temperature of boiling point of liquid nitrogen at atmospheric pressure, which will be presented in this paper to show a usefulness of this technique.

고분자 복합재료의 표면 열화 현상과 전기적 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Surface Degradation Phenomena and Electrical Properties of Polymer Composite Materials)

  • In this paper, we investigated the change of wettability, surface potential decay and surface resistivity caused by thermal-treated and plasma-treated FRP respectively for finding out the influence of electrical characteristics on the surface of polymer composites. For the change of wettability, the contact angle of thermal-treated specimen with the high temperature of 200$^{\circ}C$ increased. But that of plasma-treated specimen decreased. The characteristic of surface potential decay shows the tendency of the remarkable decrease on plasma-treated specimens, but no difference on thermal-treated specimen compared with untreated one. Also, for the surface resistivity, it shows the same trend compared with the change of contact angle. We can conclude that the degradation phenomena of epoxy surface are dominated by the induction of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity.
