Diagrid structures have been introduced as a fairly modern lateral load-resisting system in the design of high-rise buildings. In this paper, a novel diagrid system called tube-in-tube diagrid building is introduced and assessed through pushover and incremental dynamic analyses. The main objectives of this paper are to find the optimum angle of interior and exterior diagrid tube and evaluate the efficiency of diagrid core on the probability of collapse comparing to the conventional diagrid system. Finally, the seismic performance factors of the proposed system are validated according to the FEMA P695 methodology. To achieve these, 36-story diagrid buildings with various external and internal diagonal angles are designed and then 3-D nonlinear models of these structures developed in PERFORM-3D. The results show that weight of steel material highly depends on diagonal angle of exterior tube. Adding diagrid core generally increases the over-strength factor and collapse margin ratio of tall diagrid buildings confirming high seismic safety margin for tube-in-tube diagrid buildings under severe excitations. Collapse probabilities of both structural systems under MCE records are less than 10%. Finally, response modification factor of 3.0 and over-strength factor of 2.0 and 2.5 are proposed for design of typical diagrid and tube-in-tube diagrid buildings, respectively.

This study proposes a procedure for evaluating the seismic performance and retrofit of a typical reinforced building (R/C) school buildings contructed in the 1980s. The procedure is derived from the Japanese Standard for Evaluation of Seismic Capacity of Existing Reinforced Concrete Buildings and Nonlinear Static Procedure (NSP) specified in Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA 356). In this study, the Japanese Standard was applied for evaluating the additionally required seismic performance in the existing school building. Cast-in-place (CIP) reinforced concrete infill walls and steel braces were used to seismically retrofit the existing school building located in the region of Hongsung in Chungnam. In the pushover analysis, i.e NSP, the hinge properties of columns, beams, infill walls and steel braces were carefully calibrated based on the existing experiment results in the available literatures. The predicted seismic performance for the retrofitted building was compared to that for the virgin building. Based on the seismic evaluation with the Japanese Standard and the FEMA 356 criteria, the addition of CIP reinforced concrete infill walls and steel braces have superior constructablility and can improve effectively the seismic performance of the existing school buildings constructed in 1980s.

While frequency of occurrence of terrorism has recently increased, it intensively occurs in buildings that many unspecified persons gather. Terrorism which occurs in high-rise buildings causes a lot of damage. It is necessary for design approach to reduce terrorism damage from explosive of buildings. Terror risk analysis of domestic tall and high-rise buildings is evaluated by fema 455, Rapid Visual Screening which is found to be comparatively simple and practicable. Common risk factors of terrorism in domestic buildings were investigated. The results of terror risk assessment of all buildings are found to be a medium risk score, Main reason is that domestic tall or high-rise buildings have similar external-environmental factors.
This study analysed the sensitivity of the attenuation functions for the seismic hazard estimation. For the seismic hazard estimation, this study used HAZUS software, which is developed originally by FEMA(USA). The scenario earthquake ($M_w=6.0$) is located the Hongsung area, where one of the recent macro earthquakes occurred in 1978. The area for seismic hazard estimation is assumed to be Boryung city in Choongnam-do. Three attenuation functions were applied for the sensitivity analysis. The results show that the attenuation functions have much influences on the seismic hazard on the various types of buildings. Therefore the attenuation function is very important factor for the seismic hazard estimation.
The lateral displacement or drift may be the cause of the damage in the reinforced concrete (RC) columns under the seismic load. In many regulations, lateral displacement was limited according to the properties of columns. The design displacement limits may be represented indirectly through the material strain limits and the mechanical properties of columns. EUROCODE-8 and FEMA356 calculate displacement limits by taking into account the mechanical properties of columns. However, Turkey Building Earthquake Code (TBEC) determine displacement limits by taking into account the material strain limits. The aim of this study is to assess the seismic design codes for RC columns through an experimental study. The estimates of seismic design codes have been compared with the experimental results. It is observed that the lateral displacement capacities of columns estimated according to some seismic codes are not in agreement with the experimental results. Also, it is observed that TBEC is conservative in the context of the performance indicator of RC columns, compared to EUROCODE-8 and FEMA356. Moreover, in this study, plastic hinge length and effective stiffness of test elements were investigated.

The performance of masonry infilled frames during the past earthquakes shows that the infill panels play a major role as earthquake-resistant elements. Experimental observations regarding the influence of infill panels on increasing stiffness and strength of reinforced concrete structures reveal that such panels can be used in order to strengthen reinforced concrete frames. The present study examines the influence of infill panels on seismic behavior of RC frame structures. For this purpose, several low- and mid-rise RC frames (two-, four-, seven-, and ten story) were numerically investigated. Reinforced masonry infill panels were then placed within the frames and the models were subjected to several nonlinear incremental static and dynamic analyses. In order to determine the acceptance criteria and modeling parameters for frames as well as reinforced masonry panels, the Iranian Guideline for Seismic Rehabilitation of Existing Masonry Buildings (Issue No. 376), the Iranian Guideline for Seismic Rehabilitation of Existing Structures (Issue No. 360) and FEMA Guidelines (FEMA 273 and 356) were used. The results of analyses showed that the use of reinforced masonry infill panels in RC frame structures can have beneficial effects on structural performance. It was confirmed that the use of masonry infill panels results in an increment in strength and stiffness of the framed buildings, followed by a reduction in displacement demand for the structural systems.

Studies for structure design has conducted in many research institutions. A basic concept of Performance-Based Design for structures was presented in seismic fields. Hereafter, Demand were defined to communicate owner's demand to designer by several research institution. Performance-Based Design is guaranteed by an accurate analysis from hazard affected to structures and from social, economical and environmental effects. It is essential to define Performance Level and Performance Objective to grasp accurate demand for structures. In this study, Performance Level and Performance Objective in ATC-40, FEMA-273 and Eurocode were defined to introduce Performance-Based Design.

According to the global status of terroristic acts occurred from 2002 to 2010, 10,431(nearly 52.2%) of 19,946 cases have happened by bomb blasts, and 10,431(nearly 52.2%) of weapons used for terrorism were explosive substances Therefore, this study analyzed the terrorism risks of buildings according to height through FEMA 455 - rapid visual screening. As a result, the higher the building is, the higher the terror risk gets. It shows that total risk increases proportionally to buildings's height. In case of buildings over 100 meter high, the total risk is most affected by threat items. According to the risk of explosion associated with the scenario analysis, buildings over 100 meter high have high risks of Internal-Explosive.

The current AISC341-10 standard specifiesa value of 0.02 radian for the minimum rotation capacity of connections for the intermediate steel moment frame system. However, despite of the advances realized in the domains of performance evaluation method and analysis method, research onthe minimum rotation capacity of the intermediate steel moment frame systemsatisfying the seismic performance has not been conducted in detail. In this study, the intermediate moment frame systemisdesigned with respect to current standards and the seismic performance in accordance with the rotational capacity of connections is evaluated using the seismic performance evaluation method presented in FEMA-P695. The minimum rotation capacity of intermediate steel moment frames required to satisfy seismic performance as well as the major design values affecting the seismic performance of moment frame areestimated. To that goal, the design parameters are selected and various target frames are designed. The analysis models of the main nonlinear elements are also developed for evaluating seismic performance. The resultsshow that the 20-story structure doesnot meet the seismic performance even if it satisfies the rotation capacity of 0.02 radian.
